School me on Indian "sweets"

I've just discovered Indian sweet shops, but I'm overwhelmed by the choices. So many names, colors, shapes. One woman told us that a lot of them actually taste the same, but that certain ones are tastier. What should I try?

Search: Mysore paagu, nay appam, coconut barfi in doses (These are all Southern ones so I don't know if they're available where you're shopping)

Ladhus are OK, I guess. Eat a few to make your Mom happy. About a half-cup of payasam is all right, better if there's cardamom in it.

Jelly-like apple halva is a total non-favourite but the crumbly carrot stuff isn't bad in doses.

Chakka vazhati (jackfruit jam) is the roX0r.

xpost Gulab jamun. Can't hack too much of that myself. The related rasaghula (donut holes soaked in sweet milky cream) is a little better but I can only eat one or two.

Mind you, I have much less of a sweet tooth than most people and am not a big grease fan either.

OK, to be fair, I loved gulab jamun when I was a kid. I guess it can be pretty incredible if made well but maybe I've just had too many difficult experiences.

I can never remember all of the names, but there's a shop just up the street from us, and I like the pistachio, coconut, carrot and mango ones. They also have these really rich cashew fudge pieces that are fantastically good.

I can't eat too many of them without getting sick, because they're so dairy-heavy, but I always eat the whole box in a couple hours anyhow.

I had some tri-color Barfi, which was good. Also some pistachio things that were tasty. I didn't like the other stuff I tried as much.

barfi is good depending on the flavor - i once had a pink slab that made me sick for days, but the others were great.

is barfi the stuff made into play-do like pucks? possibly made of condensed milk and stuff? lovely when bright green with a bit of pistachio on top.

It's all good but particular favorites a jalabi, gulab jamun, pistachio halwa, carrot halwa, barfi in its many forms and the crumbly peanut things that I don't know the names of.

Barfi is the best substance on earth. Pistachio, Almond, Carrot, etc. - I've never had a bad one!

gulab jamun is way too sickly-sweet for my taste. barfi, while almost too rich, might be my favourite. or else jellabi.. mmm. i haven't had any for ages.

I plan to spend a Sunday afternoon reducing milk, sugar and cardamoms into sweeties sometime soon, since we got a nice Indian recipe book for Christmas. Mmmmmm.

What are the ones that are kind of orange doughy strands boiled in sugar syrup called? Man they're tasty, but all the sugar makes me manic.
