Question for Chicago ILX0rs

I'm going to be in Chicago next week (from NZ), and I have never been there before, so I'm turning to ILX to help me out. I have to spend a little time on S Archer Ave (around the 4 & 5000 blocks) and I have no idea what that part of town is like - is there much to see around there, is it safe to walk around etc etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

The weather has been beautiful here. I have no idea where that is, but after mapping it it seems to be near midway? No idea about it.

make no mistake, though, this isn't a trendy part of town with "things to do." i'm not saying that to denigrate it (i've never been there myself) -- but don't look it up in your guidebook, cuz it won't be there.

this has way more things to do than the places with things to do.

go to one huck finn's donuts on archer. and to the dugout (is that the name?) good baseball card/record shop on cicero south of midway. go down ashland to that one big record store and the irish bar area. check out the south fork of the chicago river at ashland and archer, where you can see some sort of weird oil bubbling up from an industrial accident like 100 years ago. go to one stock yards. go to one back of yards, etc.

Erm, yeah, there are lots of white people down on the South Side. There are a couple of white south siders who hang around here. Beverly is really nice, but that's much further south.

Depends on if you want to actually head into the city proper or not. Rolling Stones Records in Norridge is pretty decent and only a 15 minute drive from O'Hare.

If you want to head into the city itself, Reckless is always a win (three locations), Dusty Groove, Laurie's Planet of Sound.

Heard good things about Shuga and Rattleback, but haven't been to those in person yet.

Sorry, dumped that out quick before a meeting. To try to be a little more helpful here...

Assuming you are driving, if you are willing to head into the city proper a good bet might be to hit up Wicker Park since you can hit the biggest Reckless location, Shuga and Dusty Groove all pretty close together. Parking probably not too bad, especially closer to Dusty Groove and walk the couple of blocks to the others.

I brought up Rolling Stones Records because it is probably the easiest and most accessible from O'Hare, though I usually hit them up for their excellent metal CD section (I don't know how extensive the vinyl selection is there tbh).

Record Breakers isn’t too far into the city and a really good store. On Milwaukee Ave., so you could also head from there down to Reckless and Dusty Groove.
