Getting a lift...

Does anyone know of a website whereby one can find people who want to share car journeys? Not on a long term basis but a one off. ie, I want to go from London to Brighton but can't afford the train. Maybe some other dude out there wants to drive from London to Brighton and wants to split the petrol. On the Road style...

The Megabus is a cheap and semi cheerful intercity bus service, if you cant afford the train.

i don't know if one exists, but if not someone should set one up. even though the lift-wanters would outnumber the lift-offerers a hundred to one...

(btw do you know of the megabus? should get you to brighton for about £2 http://www.megabus.com/index.php)

Yeah, someone really should set it up but as you say, the liftees would most certainly outnumber the lifters... I think university student unions sometimes have notice boards with stuff like that (or am I thinking of 80s American films?) but I thought by now someone would've set up a website. Will check out the megabus site, thanks x

in the US, there's craigslist.org, which seems to be expanding, if slowly, to the UK. under community, there's rideshare. lift-offerers enjoy the fact that half of their gas/tolls will be paid, so there actually tend to be more than one would think.

I've just found a website called liftshare.org, seems pretty much what I was after, though as suspected there's more people wanting lifts than offering.
I think in London the ratio of car owners to population is probably far less than most places, so they'll probably always more people wanting than offering. But thanks for the suggestions.
