The mayor of Sunderland gets on it:

http://homegame.org/merch/HGflava.jpg

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

The exchanges go:

Labour: 358
Tory: 194
Lib Dems: 62

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm sorry, was that the standing before the election or the prediction for right now?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Lib Dems reckon that they have Eastbourne. Toploader Country.

Ned - that's what the betting exchanges are predicting.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Dom, what's the thinking behind why the postal vote would increase Labour's majority? I can see that the increase in the postal vote would make the exit poll more unreliable, but can't see why it would go in Labour's favour.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the live updated betting exchanges on Spreadfire at this moment. Apparently they accurated forecasted 49 of 50 states in the US elections, so it's probably our best guide at the moment.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

That was just a guess Keef, but

a) Labour have really hammered the postal votes this election
b) I tend to associate postal votes with OAPs in working class areas. The old "Labour thick or thin" electorate.

But, yeah, that's just a guess. It's definitely a wild card for the whole thing.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

It will be interesting to see how much non-uniform swing is a factor when comparing overall percentages and actual outcomes.

Keef: because the biggest postal vote-rigging scandal so far was a Labour-organised one?

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Who will be first to declare Sunderland South or Torbay or somewhere else ?

Torbay normally draft in bank workers to count, as they have skills in counting accurately and fast.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

OK cheers Dom... Makes sense.

Interesting the lack of increase for the Lib Dems... I find that fairly surprising given the number of people this time that claim to want to vote for them. It's felt like the most for years.

Caitlin, I must've missed the big postal vote rigging thing.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

It was for Birmingham council seats, I think; the local party organisation was heavily implicated in organised ballot fraud.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:34 (twenty-one years ago)

looks like Sunderland South - they have got systems in place to be first

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

So it seems to be a big movement by Lib Dem onto Labour territory, which has no effect because there are so few Lib/Lab marginals, whilst there's a smaller march by the Tories on Lib Dem territory, where there are a lot of marginals. Basically the LDs are winning with one hand and losing with the other.

The Lib Dems are claiming Birmingham Perry Barr.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Who will be first to declare Sunderland South or Torbay or somewhere else ?

Sunderland South are trying to beat their previous record - if they do, they'll be declaring in the next 10 minutes.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

We could have a quick game of ranking the Peter Snow gimmicks while we wait. The Election Battleground Triangle would probably be slightly behind the William Hague Magic Steps.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I like the graphical gimmicks, but the sound effects that go with them are already starting to grate.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Upcoming Peter Snow gimmick: Grand Theft Auto: Thanet South

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Perry Barr is currently a 23% Labour majority, so if the Lib Dems are right... crumbs.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Last year's Sunderland South results

LAB 63.88%
CON 20.05%

do you mean 2001's results?

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Lib's confident in a part of Birmingham? A city? An industrial city? This is going to be a fun night. I don't think Lib's will do too well but it bodes well for some surprises.

A / F#m / Bm / D (Lynskey), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

LDs have made big moves into city local governments in the past 10 years, so that wouldn't be *too* surprising. They took Sheffield city council a few years ago.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

"Last election's", sorry.

Lib Dem's are also confident in Birmingham Yardley.

Which Brum constituency has the student population?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Sunderland South turnout up to 49.9%

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:43 (twenty-one years ago)

HERE WE GO....

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh god, I should know about Brum. I think it's Edgbaston. In fact, it must be.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Sunderland South declaring...

The result is WORSE for Labour than the exit poll, apparently

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories up 700 seats, Lib Dem's up 800, Labour down 2,000.

1-0 to Labour.

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:47 (twenty-one years ago)

The Tories are going to break 200 seats, aren't they?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i predicted only 40-50 more Tory seats, so yes that would put them just over 200

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup, Dom. Always thought they would though. It's a night for looking for the bonkers unpredictable ones. It's also the night for having a nice bottle of 99 reserve rioja.

A / F#m / Bm / D (Lynskey), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Looks like it. And that means more Howard, at least for a few years.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:50 (twenty-one years ago)

The exchanges call it:

Labour: 357
Con: 200
LD: 64

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Michael Foot's Labour low-point in 83 was just 209 seats. Hopefully the Tories won't beat that.

The Horse of Babylon's Butler (the pirate king), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Lynskey - good point. I'm going to make a jug of pink grapefruit squash.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

It's pretty nervy tonight... Not been like this since '92.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going for coffee-with-added-Kahlua myself

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

HoBB- I'm pretty sure that 209 is the target Howard has in his head.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm drinking Bourbon and Branch, because I've got no Coke to mix with it.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

1992 - what was the tory majority something like 40?

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, no I'm not, because they're having a row in the kitchen.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Look, we have no news! Let's paint on a sheet of cloth!

Neil Buchanan: political revolutionary.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:54 (twenty-one years ago)

What was the total number of seats in '83?

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:55 (twenty-one years ago)

LIZO MZIMBA IS DOING ELECTION COVERAGE!

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

LIZO! OFF NEWSROUND! ON GROWN UP NEWS!

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Thursday, 5 May 2005 20:56 (twenty-one years ago)

LAbour holds Stroud and Corby. Tories hold North Shropshire.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Hm. The BBC live feed seems kinda uninformative.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

you are right, Kent is one of the main entrance points into the UK.

Therefore it has to deal disproportionally with immigration compared to say Nottinghamshire, where Kilroy-Silk was made a fool of.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, bloody Bethnal Green. I've already turned the telly off. One for the highlights reel tomorrow.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Labour holds: Stafford, Poplar, Brum Hodge Hill. Lib Dems hold Orkney, Tories hold Christchurch.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, why are there a bunch of odd dudes sitting around what looks like the world's largest plasticine Simon game?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh no. Galloway's in.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories hold Banbury and Tewkesbury, Lib Dems hold Romsey, Labour hold Thanet South.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Confirmed, Blairite Ona King lost her seat ! Old Labour Galloway back in

Galloway calls for New Labour to sack Blair tomorrow.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories hold Vale of York, Sleaford, Totnes, Salisbury, Tiverton.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

George Galloway bucks the tradition of thanking the returning officer!

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Ha ha ha:

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Really going this time. Goodnight all, and thanks, this thread's been great. Cheers.

Rebecca (reb), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Galloways party is called "Respect"?

NickB (NickB), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:39 (twenty-one years ago)

God, that speech was ugly.

Labour holds Northampton North, Lib Dems hold Norfolk North.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Though I suppose it's as close as we'll ever get to hearing a politician attempting to cover the songs of Prolapse. He's got a point about the other two constituencies that Respect came second in - both safe Labour seats, but they took a chunk.

Labour holds Basildon and Brum Sparkbrook.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Time for a nice cup of tea I think.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

was bethnal green close in the end?

toby (tsg20), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Only two changes in the (non-London) South East so far, and both of those are Lib-Dem to Tory.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and Labour clung onto Medway in the end, with a margin of 0.5%

The Tories, however, claimed Milton Keynes NE, and held the Isle Of Wight.

Toby - think there were just over 800 votes in it.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories also hold Henley, Penrith, North Dorset and Buckingham, and make further gains, taking both Bexleyheath and Gravesham off Labour.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

The birds are singing outside! Too late to turn in I reckon.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories hold West Suffolk, Beaconsfield.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Bloke in our street was standing for the Socialist Labour Party. 172 votes in total, oh dear.

NickB (NickB), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Lib Dems take Westmorland and Lonsdale off the Tories - their #13 target, overturning 6.6% majority.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

NickB (NickB), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:52 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, from the initial comment that this is the most boring election in years, it's turned out to be the most interesting since at least 1992 and possibly even back to 1979.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I hate the smugness of "The Sun"

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

The Galloway stuff is gonna reverberate for a hell of a time.

Labour hold Erith, Exeter, Feltham and Loughborough, but lose Clwyd West to the Tories - another Welsh Tory seat, by 133 votes.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 02:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm hoping that someone will pick up on Galloway's points about the fact you can vote by just turning up with a polling card. I know there's no official form of ID, and not everyone has a passport or driving license, but it's just not good enough.

Not sure if I really believe his conspiracy theory about the Labour party registering masses non-existent people at multiple addresses for extra postal votes.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Labour hold Dorset South, Dartford, Selly Oak. Tories hold Saffron Walden, Old Bexley & Sidcup. Lib dems hold Hallam.

James - I didn't even have to do that. I turned up, told them where I lived, then pointed at my name on the register. Then I voted. Bit worrying.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories hold SW Herts, Labour hold Hillsborough and Chatham.

And in Northampton South (Passantino Country)... the Tories take it, 5% swing.

The Lib Dems have also relieved Labour of Cambridge.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Interesting that it's dawn in London, but not in Cardiff according to the great Mr.Dimbleby, and yet it's daylight here in Edinburgh. The sun with a small 's' must be working real wonders.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, Cambridge is rather impressive - Lib Dems' #59 target, overturning 20% majority.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories hold Stone. 61 seats remain, of which I think about twenty are in Northern Ireland, so they won't be along till a bit later anyhow.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Indeed... I'm off to bed. Goodnight!

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories hold Arundel, and take Rugby off Labour. Tony Blair is in a plane being slowly circled by sinister looking vans.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Another student city seat goes Liberal Democrats.

If New Labour were to hold the next election in say early September 2009, then the concentrated student vote would not exist.

it will be interesting to see will they go more than 4 years or even upto 5 years re: the next election

DJ Martian (djmartian), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories take West Devon from the Lib Dems, Lib Dems take Falmouth from Labour, Labour hold Gillingham. Think I'll hop off in a bit.

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Tories hold Hitchin, NE Herts, SW Norfolk, Thanet North. I'm off now - seats update at http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/vote_2005/constituencies/default.stm

William Bloody Swygart (mrswygart), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Latest estimate for the majority falls to 70. Those first exit polls of 66 may yet turn out to be right.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 6 May 2005 03:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Fucking hell. It's 6:20AM and there are Labour Party idiots un-ironically chanting 'FOUR MORE YEARS! FOUR MORE YEARS!' at Tony Blair as he gives a speech at Millbank.

I vote we all turn the next week into one big drinking game where you take a sip when you hear the spin-doctor catchphrase 'historic third term' or 'I believe we have a mandate'. Tony Blair's said these both at least three times already, practically every Labour MP I've heard interviewed has used the 'historic third term' line and even fucking journalists are spouting them. Even the main headlines on the BBC led with 'Blair Secures Historic Third Term'.

James Mitchell (James Mitchell), Friday, 6 May 2005 04:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, but it is actually true...

Dave B (daveb), Friday, 6 May 2005 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Wait a minute, that Sun frontpage... The Sun basically went on the Blairite anti-Lib Dem assault in the past few days, repeatedly writing them off as "loony left" and without a chance of gaining any ground. Are they pointing out Lib Dem gains as a "always back a winner" stratergy, or are they using it as a warning of a massive evil that needs to be fought?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 May 2005 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Lib Dems hold St Ives, anyway.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 May 2005 09:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Trimble has lost his seat to the DUP

Teh HoBB (the pirate king), Friday, 6 May 2005 16:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Ulster Unionists have lost 4 of their 5 seats announced so far. That's a housing right there. 3 to the DUP, 1 to the SDLP. Sinn Fein have retained their three so far.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Friday, 6 May 2005 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Apparently in the town I was born, Harlow, they gave up half-way through a second recount because they were too tired and they're not going to bother counting the votes again until tomorrow. Seems a bit lame.

(they = vote counting people, not the UUP)
