freeciv: C/D?

I was hugely addicted to the original Civilization game, but I can't get into this "clone" version so far. First of all, even at novice level, the enemy civilizations build so many fucking cities so fast that you can't keep up. Second, the controls are annoying. Third, you can easily "miss" certain things (you've developed a new technology, built something new, etc.) And finally, it seems like my military units always lose even when they should clearly win. Does anyone like this game?

Yea, the AI is too good to beat at such a level.

I really have no idea how the computer manages to build cities so quickly... I think the trick is to place your cities in regions of maximum food so you can fart out settlers quickly.

Yeah, but it builds cities right on top of each other, which is actually a bad thing to do in the original game, but makes them impossible to beat in this one.

How does that make them impossible to beat? You mean they crush your attacking units immediately after you sack a city?

No, it just means they're a pain in the ass because they have so many cities to attack and so many producing units. It's like whack-a-mole.

I always try to out tech people and then have my frigates killed by archers or some shit.

1) Research Masonry first chance you get.
2) Go for monarchy
3) Literacy is then urgent and key.

IF you have pyramids and the great library the computer is fucked. Otherwise you need gunpowder and metallurgy and barracks to protect your ocean cities. The computer doesn't seem to understand that cities well over 12 kick ass nor does it appreciate the power of a battleship. Easy on Freeciv is a walk in the park, normal requires a little luck, ie an ocean on one or two sides of your kingdom.

WHAT'S CHANGED SINCE 2.0.0

* Fix a bug causing easy and novice AIs to be much harder than they were supposed to be.

Have we ever had a Master of Orion thread? Maybe we should.

Another way too easy video game.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Friday, 6 May 2005 12:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Videogames should be easier in general, or at least should always come with easy modes.

It's not Civ, but I was playing LinCity for a while recently and it's okay to pass a few hours. http://www.lincity.org/

it means that i could use yousendit.com to send you a 350MB image file of the civ ii installation disc. then you could burn the image to a cd (or not) and play civ ii until your girlfriend leaves you.
