Recommend a video game system/games for my dad

So my dad is retiring next month and he wants to get a console system ('cause PC games are too much bother with the specs and installation, etc.). As far as I know, these have been his favorite games over the years: Tetris (of course), Myst, Star Wars: Rebel Assault, Star Wars: Dark Forces, and some scattered SimWhatever/strategy games. So I guess he likes puzzles and third-person shooters that are more thinky than twitch-based. Rebel Assault seems like an odd one, but it wasn't too difficult and it was on rails, so it didn't overwhelm his middle-aged senses. He loves sports but hates sports games. What system would be best and what are good dad games?

Seems like he might like the Windwaker Zelda game?

Although Katamari Damacy is fun like Tetris...

Xbox - Knights Of The Old Republic?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 6 May 2005 11:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Sounds like Xbox would suit him best, based on what you said he likes.

Autumn Almanac (Autumn Almanac), Friday, 6 May 2005 11:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, KotR's a great choice, he might like that.

I wish they'd come out with Katamari for Xbox or Gamecube so I could play it.

Xbox now has Dai Senrykayu (I've misspelled it) which is a turn based strategy wargame using modern militaries (Japan, US, UK, China etc). It's quite addictive and only 20 dollars.

DAI SENRYAKU

laurence kansas (lawrence kansas), Friday, 6 May 2005 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

what about one of those single controller plug in games, the retro gadgets?

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 6 May 2005 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

actually i only just read your question fully. ignore my retarded answer just then.

Ste (Fuzzy), Friday, 6 May 2005 12:57 (twenty-one years ago)

There's Rollercoaster Tycoon for xbox as well.

I would be wary of recommending the Xbox to anybody at this point as Microsofts' track record for supporting "obsolete" systems is pretty bad. Some folks are saying the current console generation will still be getting new games through 2007 but I imagine that really only applies to Gamecube and PS2, I suspect HALO 2 is going to be the last development-push hurrah for the current Xbox and MSFT is going to be pushing all future marquee games to be developed for the 360 after next week or so. MSFT is playing for dominance, they're not going to let devs build good games for an old system.

one year passes...
okay not for my dad, my boyfriend.

When I mention buying him a system he claims he doesn't want one. I think this is because he's afraid of becoming addicted. But he often blurts out how he wishes he had a system when commercials come on for games like Scarface and he stops and watches the G4 channel far too much for a gameless man. So, muthafucka's hard to shop for and we are, I mean he is, getting a game system for xmas no matter what he says.

question, what should I get. I don't want to spend too much in case it doesn't get used often but I want to make sure he can play newer games, get the most out of it, etc.

help me ilx, etc.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 14:47 (nineteen years ago)

will there still be new ps2 games even though ps3 is coming out? can you play online with ps2? I know nothing of these things.

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

if you want to be up to date, buy xbox360 or nintendo wii.

but ps2 games are still brill, and cheaper.

Yeah and there's eleven tons of them. The PS2 is going to be around for a good while longer, pretty much guaranteed by the fact that it's one fifth the price of its successor and has the biggest library of games of any console ever made.

You can TECHNICALLY play online with other ppl using the PS2, but not really. I can only name about two games that take advantage of the ethernet port.

SOME LOW END BRO (TOMBOT), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:12 (nineteen years ago)

i'd say get him a PC, but i'm a gaming rockist.

teh_kit returns! (g-kit), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:14 (nineteen years ago)

yeah well he has a pc already. he's not a big gamer and I see this being used only casually btw the two of us. but I still think it will be fun. so a ps2 sounds best then.

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:16 (nineteen years ago)

What kind of games do you think he'll like? The Wii might be a good fit--it plays all of the old Gamecube games, will have the ability to download old games for cheap, has free online play and the controller means you're not a veg on the couch mashing buttons. It's not the best for the first or third person shooters, though.

patita (patita), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

I have no idea what that last sentence means so this is probably not a good option.

I'll probably get him scarface, gta of some sorts and nba games/sims for myself.

Sam rides the beat like a bicycle (Molly Jones), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:23 (nineteen years ago)

hard to speculate which kinda games someone might like.
what kinda movies/books doe she like? this might give you an idea about whether he'd prefer RPGs/shooters.

teh_kit returns! (g-kit), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:24 (nineteen years ago)

oh, i'm talking the wrong person, ignore me.

teh_kit returns! (g-kit), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:25 (nineteen years ago)

and the controller means you're not a veg on the couch mashing buttons

BUT THIS IS WHAT 'COMING HOME FROM WORK/LATE AT NIGHT/SUNDAY MORNING HANGOVER' GAME PLAYING IS ALL ABOUT !!!!!

WAy to ruin gaming nintendO

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:27 (nineteen years ago)

just go for a PS2. It's cheap, and you can play both PS1 & PS2 games on it.

kingfish prætor (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:28 (nineteen years ago)

It's not the best for the first or third person shooters, though.

Wii is going to be the best thing ever to happen to FPS games, u mad.

I mean, how much more First Person can a Shooter game get than point this thing directly at place on screen you want to shoot, pull trigger to fire?

Besides paintball/war obv.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 31 October 2006 15:40 (nineteen years ago)

My dad's favourite games were Tetris, and er, this: http://www.classicgaming.com/ascii/featgame_files/pyro/pyro.html

So I'd recommend a 486 DX66 for him.

Wouldn't the control syetem on a PS2 be a bit hard? I'm still coming to terms with GTA3:SA and I'm no slouch...

S- (sgh), Thursday, 2 November 2006 00:11 (nineteen years ago)

What about a Philips CD-i or a Neo*Geo AES? Or an Atari Jaguar?

xpost

I meant historically that Nintendo isn't known for its gritty adult shooter titles like GTA, but more for games that involve little multicolored critters running around (I'm much more of a multicolored critter herder myself, no offense intended).

I do think that the Wii controller will rock for any kind of game though. There will still be comfort games for hangover mornings!

patita (patita), Thursday, 2 November 2006 04:32 (nineteen years ago)

Get the Wii. Nintendo games are always the most fun.

Andrew (enneff), Thursday, 2 November 2006 04:44 (nineteen years ago)

Andrew speaks the truth!

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 2 November 2006 04:54 (nineteen years ago)

I cant wait for the new Zelda.

Trayce (trayce), Thursday, 2 November 2006 04:54 (nineteen years ago)

Wouldn't the control syetem on a PS2 be a bit hard?

? eh

that new wii zelda doesn't look half as much fun as any of the previous ones, it looks like a pc game.
