Today I am using my mouse with the wrong hand

No, nothing dodgy. It's an idea my Dad came up with. Think about it, why use the mouse in your right-hand (if you're right handed) when that is also the hand you type and write with. Also - limits RSI etc.

Anyway, I'll report back. Right now it's weird and frustrating.

Another weird thing someone told me was putting the task bar at the top rather than the bottom of your computer screen. I tried it for a while but hated it.

I tried using the task bar on the right hand side, that way you can fit in more minimised windows on the bar. But I couldn't get used to that

This is proving to be a pain already! It's really hard to control the mouse.

have been doing this for a couple of years now for exactly the RSI reasons you mention (right hand used to cramp up every 3 months or so). navigation gets easier. besides, if it encourages you to use the mouse less than that's good too.

i find it's a lot easier if you remap the mouse buttons so that left index finger gets to do the job the right index finger used to do etc.

Trying this now. It's not actually as hard as I thought it would be.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't remapped the mouse buttons yet. I was considering this but my instinct was to press the same ones anyway. I'll give it a go now.

D'oh! Our company have disabled control panel - antisinister coonts!

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah it's loads easier with teh swapped buttons.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

this is hardly an original idea, doglatin!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

YES IT IS!!!!!

AND ALSO MY DAD INVENTED PODDINGTON PEAS ONLY BACK THEN IT WAS A PENCIL DRAWN COMIC STRIP CALLED "PEABODYS" AND IT WASN'T THAT FUNNY. JUST PUNS ABOUT THE WORD "PEA".

also helps to alleviate RSI pain i find - instead of using your index and middle finger for left/right mouse button, use the middle/ring finger combo. it's like a breath of fresh air.

using the scroll wheel with your ring finger is a very refreshing feeling.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 11:48 (twenty-one years ago)

it's something i'd considered doing off and on (well, teaching myself to write left-handed) but i keep giving up because i just don't have the patience. mousing might be easier though...mabye i'll try that.

my poor neurons can use all the connections that they can get/form, and such activities do just that. sucks that it's so frustrating to do though.

JuliaA (j_bdules), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

who mouses and types at the same time?

ja (_ja_), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Tom the Cat on his Jerryblog?

mark grout (mark grout), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Haha I do this every day of my life. I mouse with my right hand (like most things, because I learned it that way) and write with my left hand (uh, because I'm left-handed).

I don't think about it much, but now that you mention it, it's incredibly convenient.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 12:21 (twenty-one years ago)

I would find it really annoying. Microsoft, in their wisdom, have put all the keyboard shortcuts on the left (CTRL-X,C,V,A,S,Z,W and so on) and I'm not re-mapping that lot.

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

you can always use ctrl-insert shift-insert and shift-delete for copy paste and cut

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

do lots of people type with their right hand only?

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

a lot of people at work here do.. they actually only ever use one finger to type.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

they should get one of those nose wands, instead, then.

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I've changed back - I can't bear it anymore. It feels weird to change back though.

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 13:01 (twenty-one years ago)

sounds magical

RJG (RJG), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

whoa I'm dumb. I changed back and then started ranting at my monitor because my left button wasn't working. whoa again!

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 13:02 (twenty-one years ago)

those wands don't look ridiculous enough.

xxxpost

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 13:04 (twenty-one years ago)

one hand typing? I'm realy slow with two and can't imagine how much longer it would take one handed!

Wiggy (Wiggy), Tuesday, 10 May 2005 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

seven years pass...

Trying this again. It's weird and knackering. Also wearing my phone headset on the other ear. Very disorientating.

I noticed I was lifting one shoulder up ever so slightly to use the mouse beforehand, and that this was affecting my back after a while, creating tense pain in my shoulder.

dog latin, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 11:00 (thirteen years ago)

i have a better idea: using the mouse with the foot, so that both hands are free!

nostormo, Wednesday, 27 February 2013 11:02 (thirteen years ago)

When I was hired as a tech writer and began working at a computer all day I began having pains in my upper right back that my chiropracter traced to my mousing. I switched to mousing with my left hand and have been doing so for the past 18 years. It was only awkward for a short time and now is totally smooth and natural for me.
