hello everyone,

hard to believe it's mid may already, but it is, so that means i'm late in making birthday plans. i'd like to cordially invite all of you lovely people to my birthday celebrations, friday week, the 20th. (so it doesn't conflict with eurovision, you see!)

i'm working on finding a place to do this...suggestions would be welcome. since it's an after-work thing, i wouldn't mind somewhere that has a late license. i've got calls in to a couple places, but other suggestions are welcome as well.

who's in?!

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 12 May 2005 12:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't roll with no old folks.

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Thursday, 12 May 2005 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

hey, i'm still two years off from being 30. and i'm trying to do a late night shindig... kids these days!

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 12 May 2005 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

sounds good.

$V£N! (blueski), Thursday, 12 May 2005 12:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Yup me too.

Alix with an i? (alix), Thursday, 12 May 2005 13:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I shall be in Boston, I think. If I'm not I'll be at my friend's goning away do, then frying to Boston straight to a wedding. Like Phil Collins.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 12 May 2005 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

I love that you're now excusing yourself from social events taking place in another country to your own.

$V£N! (blueski), Thursday, 12 May 2005 13:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you apologising to New Zealanders for not making FAPs too, Andrew?

I considered claiming that you were too old for me to associate with, but I don't think I'll try it.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 12 May 2005 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

label on my Windows bar: "Colette's bi..."

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 12 May 2005 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

label on my Windows bar: "Colette's bi..."

that's a whole 'nother thread...

sorry you can't make it, andrew, you'll be missed! at least we'll get to hang out at glasto, neither of us should be in america then, i don't think.

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 12 May 2005 13:26 (twenty-one years ago)

d0oD of course birthday shenanigins will be had. Sorry, no suggestions for venues, but I will make you cake.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 12 May 2005 13:31 (twenty-one years ago)

have birthday in park.

Alix with an i? (alix), Thursday, 12 May 2005 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

aw so soon. i hope to make it.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 12 May 2005 13:36 (twenty-one years ago)

In park at night, Lixi?

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 12 May 2005 13:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. WHY NOT?

Alix with an i? (alix), Thursday, 12 May 2005 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Its dahhhrk, innit.

Pete (Pete), Thursday, 12 May 2005 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. WHY NOT?

more like, parks don't sell bouze. if it were nicer weather, could be fun, but i can imagine us all standing around in the cold, ken c with that brown beer he likes, shivering and wondering how much we have to drink to have fun.

oh, sorry, that was the baseball game i was thinking of.

but, yeah, we'll have to wait for global warming to kick in a bit more before we can do that, i think.

colette (a2lette), Thursday, 12 May 2005 13:51 (twenty-one years ago)

We could start in a park at afterwork o'clock, assuming the weather suits, then when it gets dark in a few hours move to a pub. That would mean arriving en masse in a central London pub in the middle of a Friday evening, which has its problems.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 12 May 2005 14:03 (twenty-one years ago)

solution: a park that's not in central london that's near a pub.

i wish there's a baseball game i can go to watch.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 12 May 2005 14:22 (twenty-one years ago)

what's the walthamstow doggie track like? i've never been.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 12 May 2005 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

presumably it's rubbish for watching baseball games.

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 12 May 2005 14:24 (twenty-one years ago)

no, actually. the dogs are smarter than you may think.

$V£N! (blueski), Thursday, 12 May 2005 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

that's why they don't play baseball

ken c (ken c), Thursday, 12 May 2005 15:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Greyhounds don't play baseball but beagles do (well, Snoopy does)

MarkH (MarkH), Thursday, 12 May 2005 20:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I can make this, but I'll have to dash off before last orders to do bad indie things. Is it alright if I bring my mentalist? I think he might quite like to come along.

We're about to hit that absolutely insane run of ILX birthdays, aren't we? This nearly killed me last year.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 12 May 2005 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

All teasing aside, I hope I can make this. The most major obstacle is me offing myself due to my recent round of job apps.

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Thursday, 12 May 2005 21:05 (twenty-one years ago)

can i come to this?

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Thursday, 12 May 2005 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

My suicide? Why not? It'll probably be the most popular thing I've ever done!

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Thursday, 12 May 2005 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Jus' kiddin'.

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Thursday, 12 May 2005 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd go to that, too. anything for barima!

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Thursday, 12 May 2005 21:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you joking, Mandee? I am hoping you are really visiting London again, but I fear I that is just wishful thinking.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 12 May 2005 21:13 (twenty-one years ago)

well, someday. but probably not next week.

jill schoelen is the queen of my dreams! (Homosexual II), Thursday, 12 May 2005 21:16 (twenty-one years ago)

aw, it would be fun to have mandee there! if you can make it, you're welcome to crash on my couch.

matt, feel free to bring rob and whoever. are you club seal-ing that night?

colette (a2lette), Friday, 13 May 2005 08:20 (twenty-one years ago)

this looks fun, i'll be there!

toby (tsg20), Friday, 13 May 2005 08:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Where is it? Has anyone decided yet?

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Friday, 13 May 2005 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Toby is so considerate.

$V£N! (blueski), Friday, 13 May 2005 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

come come kate, it's a whole week before it happens, of course we don't know where yet ;)

i imagine i'll be tootling along :)

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 13 May 2005 11:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm trying to overcome phonephobia to call a couple other places...

i've got space reserved at one place, but someone got there ahead of me and booked a party for 50, and if more people turn up than he expects, it could be a queue/guestlist situation, which i'm not keen on. the other place wants loads of cash for their lovely room, which i'm also not keen on. so i'll call another place or two this afternoon. really. yep, going to do it...any minute now.

colette (a2lette), Friday, 13 May 2005 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

why don't more pubs have email???

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Friday, 13 May 2005 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I might carrier-pidgeon ahead.

$V£N! (blueski), Friday, 13 May 2005 14:13 (twenty-one years ago)

dude, either of these options are so preferable to actually calling strangers and asking if they'll let me have a room.

jimd suggested upstairs at the chapel bar, and they have email (yay!) but haven't replied yet (boo!) so i don't know if they have room for us...

colette (a2lette), Friday, 13 May 2005 18:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Will more strangers come, Edward?

The Irrelevant Tubbs (Negativa) (Barima), Friday, 13 May 2005 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

ok people, time to use democracy to decide how best to drink.

my current thinking is drinks in islington, followed by a shuffle down to club seal, to hear the musical antics of matt dc.

i think it may come down to PUB v. BAR, but here are the details of both. i've got tentative bookings at both, and will cancel with whoever gets less votes today.

the BAR is new, has a great jukebox, good-looking cocktails, nice wine, and it's open late (1 or 2) and has some fairly comfy seats. the downside is that there's someone else that's booked in the back room from 8, and it might get totally rammed in there. they're saving an 'area' for me, but i don't know if it'll be big enough for everyone, although if people arrive early, i think it's quiet after work.

the PUB is pretty small, has beer and whatnot (and also some wine and cocktails, but don't push them), a pool table and a beer garden. because of the layout, he doesn't book areas, but said that if a few people get there early, we should be able to bagsy a big area. they're open till 11:30. oh, and they have a very large pub dog.

so, what do you all think? i'll also be asking people that aren't on ilx what they think by email, so votes might not totally match what you see here. i will post the plans tonight or first thing tomorrow. woo!

colette (a2lette), Monday, 16 May 2005 08:25 (twenty-one years ago)

yee-ha! i will come to celebrate your day of birth. my vote is for the BAR, but i suppose i like that sort of thing. i suspect the PUB may get more votes in the end...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 16 May 2005 08:40 (twenty-one years ago)

in that case, i vote for the bar, so that its a closer run thing, perhaps it may even go down to the wire. as long as it doesnt result in acrimony and two rival parties, that would probably be less of a good thing that might be hoped for

charltonlido (gareth), Monday, 16 May 2005 08:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Happy Birthday Colette - prior engagement (party at my boss' house) means I can't come to this. :(

Tom (Groke), Monday, 16 May 2005 08:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I vote Bub.

$V£N! (blueski), Monday, 16 May 2005 08:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Calm it, Logan.

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Monday, 16 May 2005 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

No idea what that means.

$V£N! (blueski), Monday, 16 May 2005 08:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Pub pour moi! But it's your birthday, C, so go with what you fancy innit.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 16 May 2005 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm indifferent to the hat but it should be worn regardless.

$V£N! (blueski), Friday, 20 May 2005 10:49 (twenty-one years ago)

the pub's open till 11-11:30, after that we'll wander down the road to the N1 shopping center and to the islington academy-- you can always join us there for dancing fun!

i'm interested in seeing this hat, as well...

colette (a2lette), Friday, 20 May 2005 10:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The hat is more Dexys Midnight Runners than shoegazing, I think. It was a big success on the Whitechapel pastry delivery.

I'll be there about 9, I have to go home and pick up records first. I am bringing a sibling.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 20 May 2005 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

also, here's a link to a map, for anyone that's confused. http://tinyurl.com/8csl3

the map makes it look more complicated than it is. just walk up essex road till you see the blue old queen's head pub, and turn right down the alley just before the pub. it's 2 blocks down on your right.

i'm surprised that there isn't more confusion about where it is, for a thread this size. anyone that doesn't know, the plan is to meet at the mucky pup, islington anytime from 5-6 ish, stay till later than 11, then go see matt dj for free at club seal. hooray!

xpost-- ooh, is it a sister? she's always so cheerful, should be fun to see her again.

colette (a2lette), Friday, 20 May 2005 11:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Club Seal just free to get in, or do we have to get on a guest list to get in?

I hope to come, I may bring a bandmate (depending on what the "getting off with a crushboy" situation is) or not.

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Friday, 20 May 2005 11:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i walked past the mucky pup earlier, and the board also says i'ts open from 12 (it opens at 5 mon-thurs, though). i guess if there's any doubt then someone could phone up...

it seems i may be going to the pub at work in the next hour or so. oh dear.

toby (tsg20), Friday, 20 May 2005 11:21 (twenty-one years ago)

kate, i think there's going to be guestlist action. if you're not going to make it to the pub, text me or matt to get you onto the guestlist, i guess?

is the bandmate the potential crush? i'm confused.

uh oh, toby's going to be drunk by 3pm!

colette (a2lette), Friday, 20 May 2005 11:27 (twenty-one years ago)

No. All of my bandmates are girls! One of them wants to get off with a crush, but wants me to go along with her for backup and moral support. If she gets off with her crush, she can go home with him and I can skip off to go dancing. If she doesn't get off with him, then I will try to drag her to Club Seal. Except she HATES indierock.

Oh dear. That seems fair. As I could do with some moral support if The Spy is at Club Seal and he gets drunk and lascivious as is his habit. Sigh.

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Friday, 20 May 2005 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Kate, we'll discuss this in the pub, but if you don't make it by then I'll whack you on the list anyway.

I have cool new intro music. Its very exciting.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 20 May 2005 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks, Matt!

My crush is in Oxford and unlikely to be anywhere near Bardens or Club Seal. :-(

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Friday, 20 May 2005 11:35 (twenty-one years ago)

matt, i will be coming to your thingy to do some dancing, btw.
as tempting as it is to go early and join in the unemployed drinking-fest with jimD, i will probably not be there until a little later...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 20 May 2005 11:37 (twenty-one years ago)

the hat is not dexys, dude. its stoufville grit off topanga canyon road, circa 1970

charltonlido (gareth), Friday, 20 May 2005 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

ooh, that hat looks not too different from the hat i bought to replace the hat i bought at roskilde. i often feel russian when i wear it, but i don't know why...

colette (a2lette), Friday, 20 May 2005 12:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Looks a bit John Lennon in his "Fat Beatle" stage to me

Dadaismus (Dada), Friday, 20 May 2005 12:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I still have a hat belonging to you actually, Colette. I don't think its the one from Roskilde, though. I may bring it along tonight if I can find it.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 20 May 2005 12:20 (twenty-one years ago)

i have californians and glasgwegians making heavy demands on my sobriety and sanity. i'll most likely be passed out under a table in hoxton tonight but have a great bday party, colette.

lauren (laurenp), Friday, 20 May 2005 12:48 (twenty-one years ago)

why haven't anybody changed the subject line with the location and details yet? i'm going to be arriving late i think. coming from the gym.

and then possibly going to HDIF later! omg.

ken c (ken c), Friday, 20 May 2005 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

why haven't anybody changed the subject line with the location and details yet?

i think people should have to work for their social fun.

$V£N! (blueski), Friday, 20 May 2005 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

I'll be there, if not at the pub, then I'll show for Seal (Matt, did you get my e-mail?).

BARMS, Friday, 20 May 2005 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Yep, email received. I didn't reply - sorry, I'm rubbish and insanely busy...

Matt DC (Matt DC), Friday, 20 May 2005 13:56 (twenty-one years ago)

It's cool. I still haven't healed my dancing muscles yet, but I will do something OTT.

BARMS, Friday, 20 May 2005 13:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Gareth, I have a hat sorta like yours. When I wear it, comments have ranged from:
"are you a Chinese communist worker?"
"you look like a Spanish revolutionary" (that one was recent)
and, depressingly, "hey there Ocean Colour Scene, nice hat!"

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Friday, 20 May 2005 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry to leave early - I am still absurdly tired.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Friday, 20 May 2005 21:37 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i had a good night. i shjould have left earlier though. lots of people wore my hat. some of them looked better in it,than i. it was also weird, in a way. people can be rude.

i dont like that

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 21 May 2005 00:28 (twenty-one years ago)

that sounded harsh, didnt it? perhaps i meant it to be. i dont like the idea of a "free pass" because that just "how they are". maybe its something i havent had to deal with in a wile

barima, on the other hand, was particularly suave tonite, espcially when he wore my hat.

i saw liz and rob on the n43 on tjhe way home. i dont think they saw me with the shameful hotdog though

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 21 May 2005 00:33 (twenty-one years ago)

hey, that was great! i think that might be the best time i've had at club seal ever.

on the other hand i was so exhausted that i walked into a mirror and broke it at half six this morning. boo.

toby (tsg20), Saturday, 21 May 2005 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

In spite of my rampant cynicism, I did have fun! Particularly because I was with you guys.

Kate lost her bag on the bus home and texted me at 4am! Luckily, I was still up, talking to my mate, the concierge, in the lobby. Matt, did you give her my number, because it was pretty surprising how she tracked me down so fast!

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Saturday, 21 May 2005 10:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Blimey. I think that was the best dancefloor reaction I've ever had. Well, I presume so - I couldn't really see the dancefloor because all the people dancing on the stage were in the way. And instead of the usual "play some fucking Razorlight!" I had cute girls coming up and asking what the MIA/Diplo track was. Although I didn't see him dancing, I think my brother enjoyed it as well, if the big wet kiss he gave me was anything to go by. Hope Colette and friends enjoyed it as well.

Barima - yep, I gave Kate yer number. Also, give me a call - we have important things to discuss about tonight. FA Cup Final starts in an hour and a half - this weekend's not even begun.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Saturday, 21 May 2005 11:33 (twenty-one years ago)

AAARRRRRGGGGHHHHH!!!

I cannot believe that I took TWO strapping lads with me to the bus stop to prevent me getting mugged, and proceeded to leave my bag somewhere on a night bus. I've filled out there online lost property form, but you can't go and claim it until at least 4 days have passed so you can get to a central office. I'd go to the bus garage and look for it, but I can't remember if we took an N38 or an N42 in the end.

I *REALLY* hope it turns up because I'll be gutted if those pedals are gone for good. OK, I will have to find quick replacements for tomorrow - plus cables and tuner (argh, does anyone have a guitar tuner I can borrow?) Really freaking out over this.

Sorry Barima (and Spy) for the panicked midnight phone calls.

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Saturday, 21 May 2005 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I hope I was not rude WRT to you hat, Gareth. I really liked it!

Aside from losing my bag on the night bus home, that was the BEST Club Seal I've ever been to. OK, it helped that I was already drunk by the time I arrived and walked straight into a gang of my friends, and had the best dance partner in the whole wide world. :-)

However, the bad part about dancing on the stage was falling *off* the stage and I now have such huge bruises all over my legs that I can't wear fishnets tomorrow. :-( If anyone asks, I'll tell them that The Spy was practising his kung fu moves on me.

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Saturday, 21 May 2005 12:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Matt, I'll try and call, but I reiterate - no promises!

Gareth, I don't think I looked better wearing your hat than anyone else. I though Colette looked like the singer from Swing Out Sister when she wore it, but when I pointed this out, she was all like, "Who?"

Kate, 'Bad Uncle'! Also, I'm afraid my mate and I agreed this morning that people will steal anything, but keep a good thought about recovering them!

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Saturday, 21 May 2005 12:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh my, that was ace but today I feel TERRIBLE. I hope I wasn't rude to anybody, i'm REALLY sorry if I was.

JimD (JimD), Saturday, 21 May 2005 14:23 (twenty-one years ago)

jim and kate, you werent rude! jim, you were on fine form last night!

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 21 May 2005 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

yay, that was good fun!

thanks so much everyone that came out. i'm not sure if it was because there were so many of you, or just that you're all really loud, but you guys were like a million times longer than the other group singing happy birthday.

sgs, even though i couldn't figure out what your pressie was at first, i spent too much of yesterday procrastinating cleaning the flat by trying to make all the glitter stars not stick to the bottom, it's pretty hypnotic. thanks again!

very yummy cake from liz, great music by matt dc and my very own bottle of champagne to start off the evening.

thanks again everyone, i had a lovely time. pictures will be posted at some point soon...

colette (a2lette), Monday, 23 May 2005 08:27 (twenty-one years ago)

It was a great evening, indie disco and all. The Mucky Pup is a lovely pub and the Carling Academie is a pit of students. Ahh nostalgia.

Gareth you have exposed your hot-dog shame to the world now! The N43 was interesting, with drunken conversation from those lads who wanted you to move to New York.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Monday, 23 May 2005 08:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Who was rude to Gareth? Shame on you! (it wasn't me, was it?)

Thank you for the cycling gifts, Colette - I had a lovely evening.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 23 May 2005 08:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, and I saw someone this morning having a total Gareth moment, with a post box.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 23 May 2005 08:51 (twenty-one years ago)

it was quite fun although i was already ghetto blastered by the time i arrived club seal

ken c (ken c), Monday, 23 May 2005 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Fun night! Beware, I have photos... I wish I could post the video of b4rim4 and Matt dancing on the stage drunkenly to 'We Built This City' by Starship. OMG. Best part of the video: Matt attempting overhead handclaps and missing his own hands. Classic!

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 23 May 2005 10:13 (twenty-one years ago)

What a great ILX weekend this has been!

Jesus Christ. I have the fear. Especially since seeing that photo of Jim and myself. I have no idea how I got my face to do that.

Actually, fuck it. I want to see this video. Yousendit!

I have no idea how I got my face to do that.

Ditto me and mine. Great pics though. I have no memory of them being taken, although I do vaguely recall being pretty liberal with the huggies, so apologies to anyone else I might have manhandled. :)

John who?

I can kind of see that, yeah. Weird...

JimD (JimD), Monday, 23 May 2005 21:40 (twenty-one years ago)

why are the tops of barima's and my head semi-transparent?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 23 May 2005 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a long story, involves a mad scientist and a DeLorean.

The Irrelevant Man (Negativa) (Barima), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, hahaha, that video is uniquely special (TS: Matt's missed handclapping vs my inability to reach Gareth's hat).
