Am I allergic to shrimp?

Alright, so here's the situation. Last Saturday (a week from yesterday) I went to a party, and ate a lot of free shrimp. They were rather delicious. While I'd been drinking earlier in the day (one mint julep at hstencil's derby party and two beers), I didn't have anything to drink at the party. Shortly after I got home and was in bed (circa 2am) I had to puke. I did so out the window.

Last night was my sister's graduation dinner, bcause she graduated today from Providence College. I had some stuffed shrimp, accompanied by two glasses of wine. After dinner I went to the bar that sometime-poster Brock manages and had two beers. Drove home, was home by midnight and asleep by 1. I woke up at 4 AM and proceeded to vomit violently for about fifteen minutes.

Am I allergic to shrimp? Do I just have a week stomach? The problem with this is that two weeks ago, when my girlfriend and I were visiting my family, I ALSO ate some stuffed shrimp and drank three beers and was absolutely fine.

HELP ME, ILX. I DO NOT WANT TO LOSE THE SHRIMPIEST OF FOODS.

Shrimp is usually associated with seafood allergies. Those allergic to shrimp often suffer from respiratory allergy. Crab is also a potent allergen. Shrimp, lobster, and crawfish contain common major allergens, making cross reactivity between shrimp and crab, and lobster and crawfish possible.

Symptoms
The manifestations of fish and shellfish allergies can include those of a classic food allergy. The more common symptoms include skin, stomach, or respiratory problems. More specifically they can include nasal congestion, hives, itching, swelling, wheezing or shortness of breath, nausea, upset stomach, cramps, heart burn, gas, diarrhea, lightheadedness, or fainting.

Reactions usually appear within 2 hours after ingestion, inhaling cooking vapors, or handling of seafood. However, it has been reported the reactions can be delayed as long as 24 hours.

BUT WHY ME, WHY NOW?

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 15 May 2005 17:06 (twenty-one years ago)

And if this means I can't eat crab or lobster anymore either, I am sooooo bummed.

this reminds me of my grandmother who's allergic to mussels: her face blows up like a red balloon. hahahahaha

I had to puke. I did so out the window.

Classy!

I'm allergic to Soft Shell Crab (and many other things), but my reaction is a delayed strain of hives. It basically looks like I spent nineteen consecutive hours under a heat lamp. It doesn't make me nauseous though. Maybe you just had some bad shrimp.

As stated above in the thread, Cutty didn't get sick from the shrimp that he ate (the first time this happened.)

I wonder...

Ian John50n (orion), Sunday, 15 May 2005 21:11 (twenty-one years ago)

A shrimp allergy doesn't make you puke. Maybe the shrimp were just "off" or you drank too damn much. The shrimp allergy will make your tongue itch, your lips swell, your throat swell shut maybe, give you hives maybe. I have this allergy. I have to carry an Epi-pen.

I quite doubt it was too much to drink, as in both cases the vomitting occured HOURS after I stopped drinking.

maybe the shrimp weren't clean? de-veining 'em is a royal pain and not every restaurant/caterer/bar takes the trouble to do it right.

CORK IT SHRIMP

There is an allergic reaction among some people to the combination of seafood and beer, but it gives them hives and makes them turn bright red. It sounds more like you were bright green.

That's what happens to me.

Wine or spirits would be no problem, though?

Eating prawns makes my gums tingle. Tomatoes have the same effect.

These are new phenomena (I never used to have any allergic reaction to food at all).

C J (C J), Tuesday, 2 May 2006 10:39 (twenty years ago)

im allergic to shellfish as well -- my allergy didnt appear until i was a teenager. i too have to carry an epi-pen.

sounds like you just ate food that wasnt fresh, really.
