Any people on this board who happened to go to one of these schools and can give their opinion and experiences? Would be appreciated!

Um, tell me more.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 16 May 2005 08:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, if you want to know which one is BETTER, well I am probably in a biased position. I assumed there had been some sort of fight over the weekend that I hadn't been invited to.

Pete (Pete), Monday, 16 May 2005 08:25 (twenty-one years ago)

well, I'm studying politics and what I really would like to know iswhich schools offer the better education. simple as that. I dont really trust the newspapers university guides(should I?) but they seem to rank SOAS higher than QM.

Mantilla, Monday, 16 May 2005 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

eh, I'm not studying politics yet! but it's what I'm planning on.

Mantilla, Monday, 16 May 2005 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

WHat do you want to study the politics of? Politics is a very big subject after all. From an international point of view and also politics of Asia and Africa then SOAS is your place. QM is probably fine on the basics, not sure if they have any areas of specialisation.

SOAS has a better SU (indeed has one as QM's was just taken over by the college!).

Pete (Pete), Monday, 16 May 2005 08:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I've only applied to BA in Politics, so it's not a specialization of anything, is it? Though I know there are choices to be made in the 3rd year, and SOAS seem to have more to choose from.

What is "SU"?

Mantilla, Monday, 16 May 2005 08:38 (twenty-one years ago)

AT SOAS you'll have a deciedly different focus from day one, even if you are just doing political theory stuff (which should be universal right?*) you'll find most of your examples coming from Asia and Africa, and a more global geopolitical view. Other places can get very inward looking politically, prioroitising UK / EU politics over everything else.

SU = Students' Union.

*Wrong

QMW was great for English ten years ago (i am old now, sob), especially if your interests were non-canonical and concerned with gender/racial politics.

stevie (stevie), Monday, 16 May 2005 14:29 (twenty-one years ago)

SOAS lets you smoke da ganj in the union bar. Also you can play pool with legions of early middle age men with bad teeth.

Queen Mary's is in Mile End, so it's long way from central London (could be a pro or a con), but you will get far better pirate radio reception.

Barnaby (Barnaby), Monday, 16 May 2005 21:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Stevie, you didn't live in thoose awful towers by the 406 did you? A good friend of mine did and they were like (student)hell on earth, he was there about (oh christ I feel old now) 14 years ago

Porkpie (porkpie), Monday, 16 May 2005 21:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Before you start singing Pulp songs, I'll interrupt...

As a middle aged man with bad teeth, I have only ever played pool in the SOAS SU on Pete's birthday.

SOAS wins on the grounds that at least it's located very near a proper university.

that wasn't an old wives' tale??

nah, my dad was sick so i stayed home and looked after him during uni. i had many friends who did though... *shudders* i graduated 9 years ago, and i really don't recognise mile end road at all now.

stevie (stevie), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 11:45 (twenty-one years ago)

clearly as marajuana is illegal everywhere, it's not fine to smoke it in SOAS bar, obv...

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 11:49 (twenty-one years ago)

apparantly it's royally owned or something so They have to give notice before searching anyone on premesis. it reeks of 'batons' down there anyway.

Barnaby (Barnaby), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 11:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i had a friend that lived in those towers off the 406 as well

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 12:40 (twenty-one years ago)

As the licencee of SOAS bar I would liek to reiterate that which is said above about the smoking of illegal substances on SOAS property. It is illegal, has always been illegal and remains illegal and not trumpted up made up nonsensical story about it being on royal ground changes that (like the Queen likes people smoking weed on her premises. Which they aren't anyway.)

Pete (Pete), Tuesday, 17 May 2005 13:41 (twenty-one years ago)

hmm
