Maybe it's lack of faith in Gordo losing. :(

The B.C. elections have received a little coverage in the Seattle papers, but mainly in the form of editorials -- essentially saying that we should be helping to get Gorden Campbell the fuck out of office if we have a chance of preventing untreated raw sewage from polluting the Strait of Juan de Fuca.

SINGLE TRANSFERABLE VOTE REFERENDUM OMG!!!

Poppy (poppy), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 04:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, considering they only won two seats last time, the NDP's 20-some projected seats (last I saw) is a big deal and a victory of sorts.

30 seeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeets

WE ARE THE MORAL CHAMPIONS MY FRIENDS

Sym Sym (sym), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 05:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Way to go, B.C.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:19 (twenty-one years ago)

And when I say "Way to go, B.C." I'm actually congratulating the vaguely evangelical comic strip by Johnny Hart.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 14:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Wow the Dippers did well.
What's the deal with this delay in the transferable vote balloting?

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:40 (twenty-one years ago)

the STV votes and the election were on two separate ballots, which were put into the same boxes and then had to be manually separated. Perhaps it could have been organized better?

I voted for STV, but I think one of the reasons why the NDP did well last night (and why they won in 1996 with less votes than Gordo) is that First-past-the-post doesn't penalize the poor for having much lower turnout than the rich. It makes it all dependent on the population of an area, whether or not the population gets out and votes. OTOH, if proportional representation was in right now, Carole James would be Premier with a NDP-Green coalition.

Sym Sym (sym), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 17:15 (twenty-one years ago)

And we'd have had Reform party in power.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 17:56 (twenty-one years ago)

The Greens looked like they were doing really, really well. A lot of very respectable thirds.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

So, when is the new premier announced?

donut debonair (donut), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

33 seats for the NDP (there might be a couple of contested seats/recounts still)! But, yay! That's some comeback. Two women made big impressions in Canadian politics yesterday -- Carole James and Belinda Stronach.

Not really. They came in second in a lot of places last time. Their percentage actually dropped.
