Dancing, yodelling Austrian wins Cuban girl's heart

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Dear god I really hope Javine wears more clothes than she wore on the performance I saw her do on 'Points of View'. Really luv, tomorrow's laundry! And the fake-Turkish thing?! THERE WAS NO NEED FOR THAT, do you not SEE everyone will either be totally OVAH it or doing exactly the same?

Actually I haven't heard any of the other songs.

MUST do some workSTART GOOGLING NOW

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Were her points on view?

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay. If you like pop, in the qualifying round:

VOTE LITHUANIA and BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA!

Iceland and Norway will get through no sweat, they don't need your help.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Londoners, you MUST get Time Out this week to read a splendid Eurovision 2005 overview by mike t-diva of this parish (his LONG overdue print media debut!).

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Hello Cyprus
http://www.eurovision.tv/english/img/06_cyprus_right_2005.jpg

BRITS, VOTE FOR THE CRAPPEST TUNE GOING, DO NOT GIVE DOUZE POINTS TO THE SAME SONG AS EVERYONE ELSE, FOR THEY WILL SURELY BEAT OUR JAVINE!

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Javine is rubbish and deserves to lose.

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Handy list of semi-finalists and finalists with songs, writers and performers!

Please note Turkey's song is called 'Rimi Rimi Lev'. MUST THEY PEDDLE THIS FILTH ect ect.

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Greece: You're my lover/undercover/you're the most impressive person I discovered

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:26 (twenty-one years ago)

I was going to tip a tidy win for Norway this year, but seeing as how the best song won in 2003, and the second best song won last year ("The Image Of You" > "Wild Dances"), this year's winner will be the third best song in the field.

So that'll be Greece then, even though previously I thought they had no chance. It's a great song, sung by She Out Of Antique, aka they who were ROBBED in 2001.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:26 (twenty-one years ago)

UK's best ever entry!

Tom (Groke), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:39 (twenty-one years ago)

READ time out IN THE SHOP and don't give it ANY MONEY. REMEMBER HOW IT USED TO BE IN THE SEVENTIES KIDS!

N_RQ, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:43 (twenty-one years ago)

er, idiot me. You can't vote for Bosnia in the qualifying round as they're already in the finals due to the magnificent "In The Disco" last year.

So vote Lithuania and Belarus, then. Don't vote for Macedonia if you want Javine to win, as it's similar, and superior.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 09:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Oi! If people READ time out IN THE SHOP and didn't give it ANY MONEY they wouldn't have any BUDGET left to pay FREELANCE WRITERS!

(what happened anyway? has geoff gone cold on you?)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:23 (twenty-one years ago)

god knows, but el geoffster isn't the guy who commissions, it's someone else. i wouldn't know if he's gone cold on me because he's too POLITE and PROFESSIONAL to respond to my emails!!

N_RQ, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

An old friend of mine is out there with journalist accreditation! Going backstage and all that!

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 11:31 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm so disappointed with the Swedish entry. WHY OH WHY DID WE NOT SEND ALCAZAR.

Hanna (Hanna), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I liked last year's Swedish entry.

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 12:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Last year's Swedish entry was amazing. The legs, the song, the saucy dancing. This year, a show tune! No! They should have sent The Wallstones.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah last year's was GOOD and deserved a top 5 placement I say. This year however is The Year Of The Horribly Un-Charismatic Guy With A Crap Song.

Hanna (Hanna), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 12:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Naah, the Wallstones one was boring. Should've been Alcazar, Jessica Folcker or Arja Saijonma.

I was even in the Swedish selection committee this year! I'm very emotionally engaged in this. I now hate the Swedish people.

Hanna (Hanna), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 12:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The Wallstones sounded like early Queen! Something to take on Norway. The Melodifestival was a stronger line-up last year, there were 8 or 9 songs in last year's lot that sounded like contenders.

edward o (edwardo), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 12:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I did actually place the Wallstones one high in the selection rounds, mainly because it stood out a bit from the other 1500 fucking horrible songs I heard, but it's way too cheesy and Beatles-esque to ever have a chance in the Eurovision. Yeah, agreed, last year was a better Swedish year over all.

Hanna (Hanna), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 12:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I have been replaying the video of last year's performance in my mind, both the Swedish and English versions: "Det gör ondt" - "It Hurts"!

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Oops, that should be "Det gör ont"

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 12:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, that time of year when Europe's claim to some measure of sophistication evaporates as millions of people hold Eurovision parties and watch ABBA impersonators in 43 languagues.

EComplex (EComplex), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

More like Celine Dion/Enrique Iglesias impersonators these days.

Madchen (Madchen), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 13:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I like how many of the acts add a splash of gypsy music and a little bit o' reggae to achieve the "world music" sound. At least that's what it sounds like to me. If they are really drawing on some indigenous traditions, apologies in advance.

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Moldova's splendid entry, Zdob si Zdub, have been doing that for years Ken.

scotstvo (scotstvo), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I am still deeply upset that we didn't send a hugely-pregnant Jordan to the Eurovision Song Contest.

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Right. I'll keep an eye out for them.

Ken L (Ken L), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I am still deeply upset that we didn't send a hugely-pregnant Jordan to the Eurovision Song Contest.

Nah, I'd only havebeen disappointed if we didn't get to see her drop the sprog on live Eurovision, just as I was disappointed that Donald Kennedy didn't enter the world at Charles and Camilla's wedding.

Anyway, Estonia should win if there's any justice in the world. Let's Get Loud by Suntribe gets my douze points.

MarkH (MarkH), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

semi-fnal tomorrow 8pm on BBC3!

CarsmileSteve (CarsmileSteve), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

It's on!

What the shit, Modolva is a real country?

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Friday, 20 May 2005 08:53 (twenty-one years ago)

You thinking of Molvania?

Masked Gazza, Friday, 20 May 2005 08:55 (twenty-one years ago)

We're talking the drum machine song here, the one with the grandmother in the rocking chair.

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Friday, 20 May 2005 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.molvania.com/

Masked Gazza, Friday, 20 May 2005 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Moldova is and always has been a real country, Molvania is madeup parody

Masked Gazza, Friday, 20 May 2005 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yes, I'm familiar with the Molvania guys. Which countries had to break apart to create Moldolva?

Michael Stuchbery (Mikey Bidness), Friday, 20 May 2005 09:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The Molvania thing was done by some Aussie comedians, who arent all that funny anymore but were, once.

I'm loving that Ukranian rap group GREEN JOLLY. Green Day in flannies, anyone? Hee hee. I always forget to watch Eurovis. Whens the finals on then?

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 20 May 2005 09:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Moldova was a former Soviet republic next to Romania. They speak Romanian, but the government doesn't want people to think this, so they claim it's a different language. O-Zone are from there. They're the poorest country in Europe.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 20 May 2005 09:34 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG I just saw WIG WAM on telly in the semis and I think I bust a gut.

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 20 May 2005 09:35 (twenty-one years ago)

A conversation I just had on MSN:

Kitsune says:
god eurovision is odd
Trayce says:
hehe i know
Kitsune says:
but femminem is a good name
Trayce says:
lol
Trayce says:
it sounds like a tampon!
Trayce says:

Trayce says:

Trayce says:
bleed for me sistah
Trayce says:
ok wow that was so wrong

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 20 May 2005 11:08 (twenty-one years ago)

LOVE LIVE Y ASI!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 May 2005 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, Tom OTM re: Javine - there's a site out there hosting (for free!) MP3s from both the Eurovision entrant for a country AND a slew of songs that competed for that Eurovision slot. There's at least 1 UK song (I think it sounded like Avril Lavigne) that, in my mind, beat the PANTS off "Touch My Fire". (ha - pants / fire)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 May 2005 12:51 (twenty-one years ago)

That's LONG, not LOVE, btw.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 May 2005 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Daver, wasn't "Not Just Anybody", surely? Oh, and again, didya get my email?

I posted a YSI on the ILM thread to a Nox (Hungary) video from last year that's hilarious.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 20 May 2005 13:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I did! Dorky me, I replied ON THE GANG OF FOUR thread instead of actually replying to the e-mail. But, yeah, the short of it = I'm in, and I'll try to contribute more often!

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 May 2005 13:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Than I did the last time, that is.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 May 2005 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Also, I don't remember the name of the track in question, but that sounds familiar.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 May 2005 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Stupid Lebanon.

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 May 2005 13:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, if it was "Not Just Anybody", there's a reason it didn't get through, and it ain't the song itself.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 20 May 2005 13:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Pop vs. Patriotism: Discuss.

I was all for Javine winning, but now Tom's got me thinking. I mean, I haven't even heard the song yet. Should I really be voting tactically to try and swing it in her favour, even if the I don't like her song? Should I go along with the rest of the UK, who will almost inevitably spell Javine's downfall by voting for her main rival?

I have formulated a plan, which is this: root for the UK but also have a personal favourite which I wouldn't mind winning if she didn't. And don't vote at all.

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 20 May 2005 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

(/fence sitter)

Madchen (Madchen), Friday, 20 May 2005 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

VOTE BOSNIA!

Greece, Norway and Hungary are seen as too likely to win to risk voting for them. Greece will probably get 12 points from the UK.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 20 May 2005 14:10 (twenty-one years ago)

GREECE!

(Stupid Lebanon.)

David R. (popshots75`), Friday, 20 May 2005 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I am not sure why I'm not a patriot when Eurovision comes round, probably ABBA is to blame.

Tom (Groke), Friday, 20 May 2005 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Really, though, the verses in the Greek song are so bloody good, and they've sent the same lass that was ROBBED in 2001 when she was half of Antique, so good on her if she wins.

(I can't believe you actually LIKED the Lebanese song, David!)

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 20 May 2005 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)
