My mum once left a note for me, when I came in from school which said

"Chicken lies in the fridge"

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:03 (twenty-one years ago)

does your mum do funny stuff?

another thing my mum does is put tomatoes in curry, when she makes it, loads of them, and WOE BETIDE the member of the family who questions this.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

it's the "chicken lies in the fridge" note I like best though.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:05 (twenty-one years ago)

She once phoned me from work to remind me to "take the wrapper off the chicken" before putting it in the oven.

Thankfully her co-workers over heard and took the piss out of her. It felt good to have back up.

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I put tomatoes in a curry. You're supposed to, aren't you?

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Are you? I would never do it, my sister agrees. Surely there are not tomatoes in curry at restaurants etc?

It's important we solve this otherwise I'll have to do some work.

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:10 (twenty-one years ago)

yup, tomatoes in curry is legit.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Depends on the curry.

I've never quite got over my mother, drunk, singing "I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts" whilst we were on holiday. Her roar of "have a BANANA" will live in my memory until the day I die.

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes, tomatoes in curry is good (unless it's a tomato-less curry). Can't think of anything funny about my mum, though.

andyjack (andyjack), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd put tomatoes in a Jalfrezi or a vindaloo.

dog latin (dog latin), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I put tomatoes in curry. Rogan Josh!

Anna (Anna), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:20 (twenty-one years ago)

tomatoes in curry = legit and great!

I think curry evolved as a "what's in the fridge" dish, only before fridges, so I'm not surprised that tomatoes are appear. Though I agree they don't appear in the generic 'curry' curry, the Indian version of Sweet & Sour (er, if you get me). Does your mum read the Guardian or other papers with 'lifestyle' bits, Ronan? You want to watch that.

When I left to go to The Big City, my mum gave me a big plastic bowl (basically a slightly flattened sphere with a screw off top) with a tiny note sellotaped to it reading "Andrew's cereal bowl. Eat from this."

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"..surprised that tomatoes appear in some", that is

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:26 (twenty-one years ago)

oh god, i have so many of these, but haf blanked them from my mind.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:27 (twenty-one years ago)

People, less curry chat, more crazy mums! kthxbye!

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:28 (twenty-one years ago)

my friend sarah's mum used to make her family a dinner of bananas wrapped in ham and covered in a cheese sauce.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:38 (twenty-one years ago)

mine calls bagels "bangles" 'cos she thinks they are actually called that.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 10:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Don't even get me started. There is not time in the web cafe to get into the crazy stories about the Vicar of Bennington.

My Mum keeps a log of how often I phone compared to my brother. She told me about it once, and has denied it ever since.

Not that I keep pointing it out to her, obviously. Only every time I phone her.

My mother has a special group of clothes she's purchased, and BRINGS ON HOLIDAY WITH HER, just in case she has to go to a funeral. which actually worked out well for her on her current vacation, in which she has to attend a funeral out of the blue, so maybe this is not nuts at all and I should do it too?

I mean she's only in her mid-40s so it's not like she's in that age group where one should be considering that all friends might die, at any second!

Ally, is your Mom Jessica Fletcher? Or a serial killer (or both)?

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 11:46 (twenty-one years ago)

My parents, yesterday:

When the phone rings and my mum picks it up, if it's a dead line (i.e the caller hung up or something) she'll just stand there yelling HELLO and then after a while if this doesn't work she starts to whistle the theme tune to postman pat.

None of us have ever dared question this.

"My mother has a special group of clothes she's purchased, and BRINGS ON HOLIDAY WITH HER, just in case she has to go to a funeral."

Even I am not that morbid. (But close enough...)

My mum is obsessed with not eating fruit after lunch. She only does it in the morning because otherwise you'll have *gas* and it won't digest properly. Even today, while chatting on Skype, she stressed that I should NOT EVER DO IT, especially not now cause I'm pregnant. I was eating grapes. *bwahahahahaha* Yes, I am the rebellious daughter. ;-)
