An opinion piece in the Scotsman: "How feminism opened the alcoholic door"

Well I...huh? (The NRO's K. J. Lopez, apparently not one to hold back from conflation and exaggeration, linked this as 'feminism leads to alcoholism' and failed to mention the country-specific nature of the piece.)

My grandmother was a raging alcoholic. In rehab. She kicked the habit. She shouldn't drink/consume any alcohol whatsoever. The other week we accidently bought some cakes which contained rhum. She loved'em. Oops.

Uh...so clearly enfranchising women was WRONG.

Huk-L, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:45 (twenty-one years ago)

gah - WTF IS SCOTLAND'S PROBLEM WITH WOMEN ALREADY JESUS H CHRIST

Hm, I don't remember 'the right to drink the same amount as a man dammit' being a CENTRAL tenet of the women's movement. Funny that.

Love the suggestion that women are responsible if they're raped while drunk, too.

RJG otm. Is this anything to do with Englands problem?

Ronan (Ronan), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"Ladette" is a great word.

I do know some UK girls (scot, brit & welsh) that do consume far more than their US counterparts. They're alot more fun, to a point - then they do things they're bound to regret.

it does still seem funny, how and when some americans choose to use "british" or "english" or "britian" or "england" or "UK" or the others. I should get over it, even if it is funny.

that is not the point, here, though.

Increasing individual liberty will always have some drawbacks. Anybody who would prefer to see female Scots alcoholism fought by putting women back into their patriarchal place needs to put down the bottle.

b-b-but mother nature has spoken!

j blount (papa la bas), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 16:10 (twenty-one years ago)

re: putting women back into their patriarchal place

The obvious answer is the rise of feminism as the dominant ideology in British society.

Huh? This woman needs to get her head kicked in by Julie Burchill, now.

E.U. = Estados Unidos

Shit's all fucked up, everywhere.

Women ... will happily down Bailey’s and butterscotch vodka by the jugful.

This, if true, is a serious problem.

M. White (Miguelito), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Never mind that during the 19th century, many women (and men), some of whom were ardent prohibitionists, avidly consumed patent medicines, the active ingredients of which usually were alcohol, opium, and/or cocaine.

j.lu (j.lu), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 17:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Mmmmm... opium and/or cocaine.

andy --, Wednesday, 18 May 2005 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't AbFab really to blame?

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 22:37 (twenty-one years ago)

In the nineteenth century, back when women were well under control, patent medicines were extremely popular with women. Especially the ones that were over 50% alcohol. Called them 'tonics'.

Rickey Wright (Rrrickey), Wednesday, 18 May 2005 23:24 (twenty-one years ago)

This is a uniquely British phenomenon.

Bollocks! She should come to an Australian bar or pub on a Friday night some time.
