Don't take too long about this: save one of the unanswered questions by gracing it with a reply.

There must be one in the backlog you deem worthy of saving. See if we all go for the same one.

No, this isn't true. In fact, it's a pretty depressing phantom zone over there.

There.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 19 May 2005 14:28 (twenty-one years ago)

there seems to be a good reason why none of these were ever answered.

I did the tram pantograph one. I might DO 'EM ALL.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 19 May 2005 14:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i got enough trouble getting people to reply to posts on threads i don't start. imagine the shame i'd feel if i started asking questions. i could double the backlog in a week.

If you spend more than a few hours on ILX reading old threads you'll see that one of the unwritten rules of good thread management is that if nobody responds to your thread for a while, you should post the first reply yourself which serves not only to bump it up to the top of the New Answers Page but, more importantly, to destigmatize the suspicious newcomer to the thread database.

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 19 May 2005 14:39 (twenty-one years ago)

clinical!

g-kit (g-kit), Thursday, 19 May 2005 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

There was a long debate once over whether this was actually BAD etiquette Ken. I am delighted to find that the database counts threads only answered by their starter as unanswered.

Tom (Groke), Thursday, 19 May 2005 14:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Wasn't it also the case that, over on Greenspun, an unanswered question simply wouldn't appear on the New Answers page so the thread starter always got the ball rolling with a response to make it visible. Now we have bold unanswered questions.

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Thursday, 19 May 2005 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought as much.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 May 2005 14:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I revived the very first unanswered question, the one about Halo Jones.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 19 May 2005 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I did notice that Tom. And you can't save a doomed thread with this trick as I learned on a thread I posted to maybe fifty times with only one guest post by Ned (who appeared when I summoned him basically) to save it from the being impounded in the Unanswered Questions page. But the new answers page WILL remove the unsightly Boldface, which I have convinced myself is somehow offputting- maybe nobody wants to go first?

Ken L (Ken L), Thursday, 19 May 2005 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I did one earlier than that one, this morning. Something about Beat Blogger 100 or summat.

OK, now I did this one, it seemed appropriate.

I personally won't rest until the very last unanswered question has been reprieved. And it will interesting to see which is the last one to be answered.

Note pad Chris, Thursday, 19 May 2005 15:07 (twenty-one years ago)

This experiment already seems to have broken the new answers page or something

Note pad Chris, Thursday, 19 May 2005 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not sure if I believe in affirmative action for ILX questions. They should be answered based on their quality and pertinence and pertness.

Does that happen?
