Fruit at the Bottom Yogurt

Why is this oddity still around? I loved it as a kid, but now it bugs me. I can never stir it well enough and I'm left with a bunch of gooey apricot jam at the bottom.

andy --, Friday, 20 May 2005 18:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The trick is to agitate it before you pop the top.

Huk-L, Friday, 20 May 2005 18:10 (twenty-one years ago)

You mean you WON'T stir it well enough.

Bnad, Friday, 20 May 2005 18:13 (twenty-one years ago)

if the point is to stir it up, why sell it as fruit-on-the-bottom? why not just sell fruit yogurt?
i must therefore conclude that we are supposed to eat the yogurt and the fruitiness in separate spoonfuls. which is weird.

carly (carly), Friday, 20 May 2005 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

You have to stir pre-mixed fruit yogourt anyway, might as make a challenge out of it.

Huk-L, Friday, 20 May 2005 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

its not weird, its tasty. whenever i mix them up completely i find that there's way too much fruit. I like the taste of unmixed yogurt right near the fruit that the color and flavor of the fruit have leached into. i like the variations in flavor you get.

ya sure, if you're an "adult" with "no time" who hates fun and who sucks down a yogurt in their passat on the way to work, i guess the pre-mixed stuff is for you.

AaronK (AaronK), Friday, 20 May 2005 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Yogourt-In-A-Tube.
I think I'm gonna get some after work.

Huk-L, Friday, 20 May 2005 18:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I think they probably do it so they can just make a fuckload of plain yougurt, and then easily make whatever kind they're short of: boysenberry, key lime, lemon, cherry, mixed berry, vanilla, peach, strawberry, etc.

andy --, Friday, 20 May 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

shut up, dont ruin my fun.

AaronK (AaronK), Friday, 20 May 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Aha! but which of the above 'gurts NEVER has F-A-T-B?

andy --, Friday, 20 May 2005 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I think that's kinda how any yogurt is made. Plus hopefully they have figured out market demand a little better than that.

I don't like fruit on the bottom because it's too sweet, and also my favorite yogurt flavors are citrus and it doesn't quite work with that. Is there a yogurt brand out there that is less sweet than the others, because they all kind of seem too sweet for me. Plain yogurt with chunks of fruit is so much better.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 20 May 2005 18:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Lemon yogurt is CLASSIC.

My mom like 5 seconds ago announced that she had gotten my Yogurt

A homunculus of Darby Crash, .... created for the purposes of *EVIL* (ex machina, Friday, 20 May 2005 18:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I agree with you about the plain yogurt and fruit, teeny.

I hate fruit on the bottoms so much that I passed up a "20 for $10" sign at the grocery store the other day.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 20 May 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I have an addiction to Pina Colada Yogourt. It's the summer version of my addiction to French Toast Bagels.

Huk-L, Friday, 20 May 2005 18:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Here is San Francisco we have Clover-Stornetta Dairy and their lemon yogurt is fruit at the bottom! It's like that shit from the inside of a jelly donut!

andy --, Friday, 20 May 2005 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

oh that sounds so nasty.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 20 May 2005 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

See, I hate that fruit compote-like texture in my yog.

Sarah McLusky (coco), Friday, 20 May 2005 18:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Doesn't Dannon have some whack-ass thing where the fruit and gurt are in separate parts of the cup? That's sounds even more bogus.

andy --, Friday, 20 May 2005 18:53 (twenty-one years ago)

At this posh place where I buy my yogourt, a six-pack gets you a take-home concierge to stir that shit for you.

Huk-L, Friday, 20 May 2005 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

I get plain yogurt. I add honey or whatever I want to it. Or I use it to make smoothies or dips.

Casuistry (Chris P), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Mango Tango Shrimp Salad, I make with Vanilla Yogourt.

Huk-L, Friday, 20 May 2005 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

And mangoes and shrimp of course.

Huk-L, Friday, 20 May 2005 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

and Cumin.

Huk-L, Friday, 20 May 2005 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

"I get plain yogurt. I add honey or whatever I want to it..."

Try the APPLE BUTTER in this context, I think you'll agree.

andy --, Friday, 20 May 2005 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Fruit yogurt has a shitload of sugar in it. Go the teeny way.

Je4nne Ć’ury (Jeanne Fury), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Sometime Non-Fat yogurt has ASPARTAME in it! weird.

andy --, Friday, 20 May 2005 19:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Sometimes Non-Fat yogurt is CURSED!

("That's bad")

Very bad.

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyway, it's not an oddity. Jesus:

a) it provides temporary stress relief as you have to aggressively stir the fruit around the yogurt such that it blends in and changes color.

b) it's NOT sweeter than that horrible overly sweet atrocity Yoplait. URRRRRRRGH! (especially the stuff that comes with pre-packaged "crunchies"... AAAAUGH!!)

Pre-stirred fruit yogurt sucks ass. It tastes more artificial, and it's more acidic. In fruit-at-the-bottom yogurt, the fruit part being at the bottom may prevent the above plain yogurt from becoming more liquid. When it's pre-mixed, there's something too liquidy or "off" about it that I can't easily describe. Anyway, UP UP to FRUIT AT THE BOTTOM!

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:31 (twenty-one years ago)

see I think the fruit on the bottom is too liquidy! and not acidic enough!

the bottom line is that manufacturers need to stop sweetening yogurt like it's pudding or something.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I think we've finally found something we can all agree on.

andy --, Friday, 20 May 2005 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

To the Pro-Fruits: Is there other food you could see this separation working in? I'm not talking about the obvious (parfait, shepherds pie, etc) but something that COULD be stirrable but currently isn't...

andy --, Friday, 20 May 2005 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

As in something you buy all in one? Because well, there's this stuff called Quik, and...

donut debonair (donut), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i do the plain yogurt with fruit thing. it is far better. i get sorta sickened that yogurt is marketed as healthy & then it's loaded up with so much crap that it ends up being counterproductive as a healthy item to eat.

kelsey (kelstarry), Friday, 20 May 2005 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

The cafeteria where I work sells this Greek yogurt...can't remember the brand...that comes with separate little pouches of fruit or honey or nuts so you can mix it to your taste, and it SO FUCKING GOOD. The yogurt is ridiculously creamy and tart. Greeks know their yogurt.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 20 May 2005 21:03 (twenty-one years ago)

(i don't mean i work at a cafeteria, i mean the place where i work has a cafeteria...)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 20 May 2005 21:07 (twenty-one years ago)

The Bulgarians invented yoghurt!

andy --, Friday, 20 May 2005 22:17 (twenty-one years ago)

God damn...I hate thatfruit on the bottom scam. Like you should buy it becuase you can take the loving time and care necessary to mix the fuit YOURSELF. really its just a freakin gimmick. its still just a rotting cup of congealed white beast bait waiting for a sugar loving lick maker to slurp its ways!

I will say yoplait custard style is king of yoguhrt...I taste and quiver

Mike Hanle y (mike), Saturday, 21 May 2005 08:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i like natural yoghurt with fresh fruit. sweet and sour together, yum.

gem (trisk), Saturday, 21 May 2005 09:46 (twenty-one years ago)

If i buy fruit yogurt, it is always the yogurt with fruit on the bottom. I like to barely mix and have it be all lumpy to eat. For some reason I find this yogurt to be more tangy.

h0t h0t h0rsey (Carey), Saturday, 21 May 2005 13:05 (twenty-one years ago)

i realize fruit yoghurt has tons of sugar in it (just like those fruitmilks) but i'm a yogoholic. i used to drink liters of yoghurt with canderel until i realize sweeteners are worse than sugar. so now i eat yoghurt with strachiatelli (yum!), yoghurt with fruit and muesli or plain yoghurt (mixed with jam).

is dannon is the same as danone? a friend of ours worked for danone.

nathalie's baby (stevie nixed), Saturday, 21 May 2005 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Mike Hanle y, you are an amazement!

Tell me, oh wisest of the wise, why do tv advertisers still insist that men don't eat yogurt and women don't drink beer? I should think that post 2000 we would have more equality in yeasty foodstuffs.
