Superiority Complex

In what ways have you caught yourself behaving as if you were better than the people around you? How often have you had thoughts along those lines and what situations tend to bring them out in you? Are some people intrinsically "better" or "more worthy" than others?

i am better than that open can of worms upthread.

cindy williams permafrost (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm better than *everybody* on the bus. It's a useful defense mechanism.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, maybe not "useful."

slightly more subdued (kenan), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:45 (twenty-one years ago)

farting unapologetically

miccio (miccio), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

different people are better in different situations, it's just that some of those situations don't actually exist.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Honestly, all of you people who think you're all that annoy those of us who are.
;^)

j.lu (j.lu), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:53 (twenty-one years ago)

that's kind of a joke but kind of serious too. (my above comment, that is.)

This is a difficult question. I can more often think of times where I think "I'm better than this situation."--like being at a really shitty dance club or something, but I don't know if that's the same thing. I'm more likely to think "I'm glad I'm not you" than "I'm better than you." Maybe that's the same thing and I'm just fooling myself.

teeny (teeny), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a hell of a lot better than thinking you're worse than everybody else. Which funnily enough seems to be the feeling that alternates with thinking that you're better, in a see-saw like fashion. Or was that a rusty sawtooth?

Ken L (Ken L), Friday, 20 May 2005 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I have been humbled into thinking that I'm only better at some things than everyone else, like dealing with my family and doing my own laundry.

M. White (Miguelito), Friday, 20 May 2005 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I'm better than everyone else at doing my job, and faster too! However, ILX brings me down to everyone else's speed level.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Friday, 20 May 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

trying to explain my thoughts on religion makes it come out like i think i'm better than everyone else, because i find religious practice helps me remember to be better than i am naturally, so that implies to people that if they don't practice a religion they must be worse.

i don't actually think i'm better than anyone else at anything. maybe identifying greek and latin roots of words...yippee.

Maria (Maria), Friday, 20 May 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

My self-esteem is perhaps unnaturally healthy.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Friday, 20 May 2005 20:39 (twenty-one years ago)

You'll go far, kid. You're gonna be HUGE!

slightly more subdued (kenan), Friday, 20 May 2005 20:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I scoff at almost everybody's clothes but my own.

Last night I thought of my neighboors " My but they're so ...commomn! With their pit of fire and their chuckles! I wish the authorities would break up their little get-together and confiscate their noise machines!"

Every job I've ever had to thread.

m coleman (lovebug starski), Saturday, 21 May 2005 12:58 (twenty-one years ago)

the thing that is interesting is, when people have low self-esteem, or lack of confidence, are in a bit of a rut, or are just not getting the breaks, we tell them "you're really great, its time you realised that", and, more to the point, we tell them that they must start thinking of themselves as a great person, better than others even, "you can do better than him!"

and, yes, breaking that cycle of low self-esteem/confidence requires this to some degree, having faith in own self, thinking you can do better than the other guy,

and, if you think it, others start to notice it, perhaps they even like the more confident, vivacious even, you. and you notice this reaction too, and its good. and you think, hey, maybe they're right, i'm alright really.

and you work more on it, perhaps, things are going much better now, it really works, and the old tentativeness fades away, perhaps you take charge of things now, you don't really worry about stuff so much anymore, it'll be fine, those anxieties by now may even be a distant memory

and then one day, you wake up in your crib, think about the rest of the day, slip on a mongrammed dressing gown, chop out a line, light up a cigar, and shout to the rest of your crew, as they high five you..AIGHT SON, LET THE PIMPIN' BEGIN

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 21 May 2005 13:49 (twenty-one years ago)

i believe this is approximately what happened to graham, after that fateful day, when he enquired, "where are the bars at?"

charltonlido (gareth), Saturday, 21 May 2005 13:50 (twenty-one years ago)

graham is still on aim. ask him.

it's even better when low self-esteem and superiority complex go hand in hand. it occurs more often than you might think. i dunno, i usually think i'm the dumbest of the lot, but there are those rare occasions when i suddenly (falsely?) realize i'm the brightest in the group. (-> usually during movie/music quizes hahaha)

nathalie's baby (stevie nixed), Saturday, 21 May 2005 13:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I just made a post on a Radiohead thread that reminded me that I started this thread. Good God, I often wonder how anyone puts up with me (then I realize that most of my thoughts stay in my head, so WHEW).

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Saturday, 21 May 2005 14:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think is actually better than me, yet at the same time I don't think I'm better than anyone else. Oh no! Averageness Complex.

Under my thoughts of religion my rating of betterness becomes binary, and everyone is a 0. the hobo juckie, the president, the super moral loving pastor, all are imperfect and therefore 0.

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 05:01 (twenty years ago)

Shut up.

John Justen (johnjusten), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 05:04 (twenty years ago)

but at the same time are 1 in that they are created in the image of God and everything is for Go'd plan and glory. So it's kind of 90° off of the spectrum of worseness to betterness (like Libertarianism as related to Liberalism and Conservativism)

A Nairn (moretap), Tuesday, 15 November 2005 05:04 (twenty years ago)
