Depends on whether or not you have a funny-looking head that wouldn't go so well with baldness.

Ian Riese-Moraine is on toffuti break! (Eastern Mantra), Monday, 23 May 2005 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

if you have a bald patch would you just keep the rest of the hair (e.g. if you have a funny shaped head and want to hide it.. or would you shave it all and be proud?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 23 May 2005 12:52 (twenty-one years ago)

also, do women keep their hair for longer than men? i am always surprised to see a lady with a bald patch.

ken c (ken c), Monday, 23 May 2005 12:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I generally recommend just shaving the entire head as soon as this starts happening. Also: not flipping out over it.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Monday, 23 May 2005 12:55 (twenty-one years ago)

erm, what's there to flip out?

ken c (ken c), Monday, 23 May 2005 12:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I think bald men are hot hot HOT. Just dress well and if you're very thin, put on some weight/muscle. If you can do that, I promise you, you may get even more tail than you might've gotten when you had hair.

To shave or not to shave: It depends. Just keep it short as possible.

dud. mine's starting to go, but not so much that i can't get away with the ol' dave davies ear tuck. three kids just came up to me. one asked, 'hey, are you in a band?' for a second i felt cool, then another goes, 'yeah, are in counting crows?'

A massive, unambiguous DUD if it occurs before 30, otherwise kind of inevitable and therefore neither C nor D.

I am, needless to say, under 30 and enduring the double whammy of receding and balding hair. God I'm going to miss my fringe...

metalmickey, Monday, 23 May 2005 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

What's a good hairstyle for a receder? I've got one of those Count Dracula style receding hairlines and I'm kind of at a loss as to what to do with. It's not really drastic enough to merit shaving my head (I wouldn't want to anyway), but I've been in fits lately because my usual long and shaggy normal cut isn't working anymore. Perhaps I should just slick it back and embrace the receder? I want to do something other than "just keep it short".

SOTD OTM
Testosterone's making that hair disappear, so it's time to jump on the macho train. Should be easy with all that manliness pumping through your veins. Long hair's for girls anyway.
GRRRRRRRR Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr (see my muscles?)

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Monday, 23 May 2005 17:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I second the suggestion of keeping one's hair short, once it thins. I further agree that attractiveness is a far larger issue than how one's hair looks. Looking fit, happy, confident and competant is a much better strategy than having lovely hair.

Aimless (Aimless), Monday, 23 May 2005 17:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Hstencil would disagree

(I kid!)

miccio (miccio), Monday, 23 May 2005 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm amused that i was supposed to be bald by now while high school friends who claimed they'd never go bald are well... pretty damned bald.

that said, yeah, i'm gonna go bald.

totally unscientific things i've tried to do to avoid baldness:

-no unnecessary hair care products. no dying. no perms. no bullshit. seriously, burning your scalp seems like a fast track to hair loss.
-keeping my hair pretty short. seems like less hair weight = less tug on your folicles. also, like cutting your chest hair... shave it down and it grows in thicker... hehe... or at least it seems thicker.

i know a couple dudes that shave their heads down to nothing. the mr. clean look.

i've thoought about keeping a ridiculous comb over just for self-deprecating laff tracks...

my heart goes out to the fake hair users tho. lee press on hair vs. lego snap on black elvis doos?

i can't wait to teach shop class.

msp (mspa), Monday, 23 May 2005 18:22 (twenty-one years ago)

This one kid in my film classes by in school shaved a bald spot on his head and fashioned himself a comb-over. Oddly, this was the slightest of his eccentricities.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Monday, 23 May 2005 18:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I definitely don't let my hair grow out as much as I used to, but otherwise I'm not sweating balding at all. My lovelife's been a lot better since it started thinning, though that probably is coincidental. The fact is it really doesn't matter.

miccio (miccio), Monday, 23 May 2005 18:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i'll probably be going bald. wouldn't be quite so dud if i didn't also have a skin condition on my scalp.

Don't fight your hair loss. All those things are dud dud dud, dude. And receding hairline is sexy, even in scrawny unfit eighteen-year-olds.
Hair loss is NO REASON to punish yourself with an exercise regime. You should CELEBRATE hair loss, with fine wine and victuals.

How tall are you?

CaptainLorax, Saturday, 5 June 2010 01:14 (sixteen years ago)

6'2 maybe and skinnier than most. that makes it worse i guess?

sonderangerbot, Saturday, 5 June 2010 01:35 (sixteen years ago)

I was gonna say that height is a trade-off for hair loss

CaptainLorax, Saturday, 5 June 2010 01:38 (sixteen years ago)

really? having a hard time thinking about good looking baldish tall guys atm

sonderangerbot, Saturday, 5 June 2010 01:53 (sixteen years ago)

At a shade under 6 feet, I don't fully qualify I suppose. But on "baldish & good looking" I can still manage to deliver.

Aimless, Saturday, 5 June 2010 02:02 (sixteen years ago)

I have a white guy friend who purposely shaves his head and it looks slick on him. I can't picture him without glasses or a bald head. I suppose he is a bit taller and a bit thinner than average too

CaptainLorax, Saturday, 5 June 2010 08:53 (sixteen years ago)

it's ok to be bald

please, please, don't do a combover, the hair has to go. Had a friend who we had to actually get drunk and get my other friend to shave his hair in solidarity with him as the same time in order to stop him looking ridiculous after about five years of having long hair combed-forward over a receded hairline. He made his peace with it within a year.

The emphasis put on hair loss it by the press is ridiculous...If you happen to combine it with being fat and middle aged, you're practically on the way to going postal as you're clearly such a loser.....

from the Times today:

There is speculation that Derrick Bird, left high and dry in middle-age, fat, balding, divorced and beset by financial worries, snapped after an argument with his twin brother over who inherits the bulk of their elderly mother’s will.

warning: if you have a weird, squarish head and your eyes are set a little too-close together you way want to go with just a short, neat crop first. not everybody can rock the clean-shaven look.

yeah i'll go fully shaven and look like the waiter from twin peaks by the time i hit 30

sonderangerbot, Saturday, 5 June 2010 17:22 (sixteen years ago)

I was having dinner with two guys in their 20's: bald white guy and balding white guy. I told the latter he shouldn't shave his head (like he said he wanted to) because his neat crop look is fine and I don't think the completely bald look would work as well with for him

CaptainLorax, Saturday, 5 June 2010 19:42 (sixteen years ago)

Crop it crop it!! I am fully in support of the balding or mostly bald short buzz.
