basically, guy has girl, gets girl pregnant by accident, looks shocked when this is revealed to her, doesnt know what to do, has bad premonitions of what might happen to her during childbirth, doesnt go to the hospital to get her checked out but goes to the local no good vagaband mafia boss who gets him off the straight and narrow to help him, he loses all sight of his wife and his morals and ethos to do the right thing, girl dies, he never sees his kids, he goes on to work with vagaband as he has no friends left, and lives the rest of his existence out as a evil bastard, trying to run away from his terrible deeds and broken heart. basically, his regret over what he did to his wife fuels his bitterness, and his bitterness from rejection and a broken heart is what drives him to wreak havoc on the planet.

yeah so basically, he does it all for love, for the girl, but it backfires, then cos it all goes wrong, everything he does is a byproduct of his loneliness, self-loathing, and romantic failure and rejection.

So should it have starred John Cusack in Grosse Point Blank?

The soundtrack would have been better, that's for sure.

you know, it is kind of heartbreaking to see the vague shapes of better ideas that loom up occasionally in these movies, like the wiemaresque political machination stuff in the first one, only to see them buried. it's like lucas is some kind of autist who doesn't know how to express the thing he thinks he's expressing, or doesn't know that he's not expressing it.

xpost—i know, it's great! it sounds like what a good movie would be like! but you wonder, did GL know that's the movie he was making? it's just wierd that there is enough fragmentary, unattended bits in the movie that we can retrofit these coherent, interesting narrative thru-lines across them.
