Defend the Indefensible: Decaf coffee

I've scoffed at it for years as some kind of bizarre dad-drink concoction. And yet, lately I've been wanting to drink coffee (possibly w/booze in it) near bedtime just because it tastes good, but of course I don't want to be up until 2 a.m.. Dare I decaf?

Do it. Part of the rap of decaf is that it doesn't taste as good as regular, but there are plenty of decaf beans nowadays that taste perfectly fine.

rap against decaf

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 14:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw some Oskri organic barley hippie coffee in the store last night, is that good?

I prefer de-activated cocaine. Decaf, like non-alcoholic beer is a serious dud.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Dud.

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't really see what has to be dud about decaf OR non-alcoholic beer. I can't really drink coffee anymore because my body's developed a sensitivity to caffeine, but I really like the taste, so I will have decaf every now and then. (Although now I think, unforunately, that I'm sensitive to that, too.) Similarly, if for whatever reason I developed an alcohol intolerance, I'd probably go the O'Douls route. Probably not around the house, but if I was going to a party and wanted to hang out and drink beer, sure.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 14:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Hey, do what you need to. Coffee to me is more than the taste, it's also a drug. Similarly, beer wouldn't have the taste w/out the alcohol. If I want a warm beverage bereft of caffeine (which I often do), I'll have camomille or verveine. If I want something refreshing without alcohol, I'll have soda water or lemonade or whatnot.

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't imagine that non-alcoholic beer would have the taste or variety of real beer. There seems to be a greater degree of subterfuge in hanging around a party/bar drinking non-alcoholic beer as well.

Decaf coffee, however, I can see doing if it tastes good. Actually, I HAVE had some at various family events because of the convergence of late night + PIE + the presence of decaf coffee.

Anyway, it seems like a better alternative than drinking so much coffee that I'm completely desensetized to the caffeine (like some people I know).

I guess I was just thinking there's such a stigma against these things. People get really worked up about decaf, especially. Actually, the non-alcoholic beer might be a little embarrassing, just because it's prob. associated with recovering alcoholics.

Decaf coffee has been feeding my psychosomatic tendencies at 3PM for some time now.

Mike OTM about switching to camomille. Sometimes just switching for coffee to tea is good enough. Tea does not seem to take me on the rollercoaster ride that coffee does.

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 15:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, tea is great. Esp. rooibos tea, because it still tastes robust.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 15:43 (twenty-one years ago)

even decaf coffee (and tea) has some caffeine in it, and may keep you up depending on how sensitive you are to it. Now that I am pregnant, I'm watching my caffeine intake, and so thank goodness for decaf. Also when I go see a cardinals game in a couple of weeks, damn straight I'll be getting some sort of near-beer. I've always hated sweet drinks, and I hate them more now that I'm preggo, so I'd be stuck with milk (and herbal tea I guess) if I didn't have these two options.

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 15:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't mind the taste of near beer, based on the few times I've had it.

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't like tea.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck you.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 15:54 (twenty-one years ago)

What have you tried, Jordan, Lipton? That's only good for iced tea.
