This was an argument between my housemate and I in the checkout line at the grocery store. Which kind of nerd is more worthy of pity/derision: Trekkies or Larpers?

I say Trekkies, because at least Larpers are being somewhat creative.

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

And let's not even mention Furries...

dan m (OutDatWay), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 16:01 (twenty-one years ago)

What is a Larper?

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

LARPers without a doubt.

jel:
A LARPer is someone who engages in LiveActionRolePlaying. Vampires are sometimes involved.

Neither of these "types" is remotely worthy of pity or derision. I'd lay odds that of them see plenty of action.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Trekkies are mostly harmless and fun, but larpers can be quite inbred and elitist. I choose Trekkies.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

What are Furries?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

People who wear furry costumes/dress up as animals. It's a sex thing, I think, may have seen a Channel 5 documentary, can't be sure.

jel -- (jel), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, I remember asking this question before, and someone posting a pic of one, and me being a bit shocked.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Furries = the guy in a bear suit getting a blowjob in the Shining.

You mean "pitiful" LARPers like Teeny and Tep?

aahahaha i was just about to link that. LIGHTNING BOLT! LIGHTNING BOLT! LIGHTNING BOLT! LIGHTNING BOLT!

sleep (sleep), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 23:45 (twenty-one years ago)

Nobody on ILX really has any place to call anybody else on ILX a bigger or more pitiful nerd. Lightning bolt notwithstanding.

That doesn't stop me from telling everybody off on a regular basis, but I try not to be boring about it.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 24 May 2005 23:53 (twenty-one years ago)

tep and I aren't larpers or trekkies, get your nerd phyla straight! ;)

teeny (teeny), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Waitwait what's true dungeon then? Clearly I am a noob nerd :(

GP, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah, true dungeon. I guess you maybe could count that as LARPing but I think that's a stretch. It's kind of its own thing, but I haven't done it or LARPed so I don't really know!

teeny (teeny), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck LARPers. They ruined many nights of sleep when I used to work game conventions, running around the halls and pulling fire alarms and shit.
