Parent crashes vehicle into school

A parent irate over her children's treatment at Huey Elementary School crashed her car into the front of the West Philadelphia school this morning.

Her three children, a girl in fourth-grade, a boy in first-grade, and a boy who is in special education, were in the minivan at the time and they were uninjured, said Philadelphia School District spokesman Vincent Thompson.

School had already started at the time of the 8:20 a.m. crash. No students were outside at the time, Thompson said.

A bus attendant, who was closing the door as the motorist rammed the building, suffered minor injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital to be checked, Thompson said.

The mother is expected to face charges.

The mother, Thompson said, has been complaining to school officials since January that her children were being picked on at the school, possibly in a racial dispute. The district was working to satisfy her concerns, he said.

The school building was not damaged, he said.
