SEXJACKED

Oh NO. I was doing a google search for something that has nothing to do with sex, and I clicked on a link that seemed pertinent to my search, and after I clicked on it, the URL changed to something about a SNATCH and all these sex ads popped up, and now they are everywhere! They just keep appearing. How to stop it?
I'm sorry if a thread answering a question like this already exists, but the crotches are everywhere and I am in panic mode.

I just realized I made the title of this thread a bit suspicious, and also that it kind of seems like one of the threads random trolly people start. I'm serious, though! Oh, please help. Please.

Start by hitting CONTROL + ALT + DELETE, highlight iexplorer.exe (and any other instances), and click "end process."

I thank you for the existence of this sentence.

(In cases like this, I've just closed down the browser entirely. Alternately what Mike said.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

This assumes you've got a windows machine and MS Explorer, of course.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Kill every browser window you can see in the taskbar; one of them is generating the Javascript that's popping up the other windows. If that doesn't work, reboot.

Alternately, get your boss and say "I let [name of co-worker you hate] use my computer during lunch and now THESE keep popping up all over!"

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Then I'd update Windows (again, assuming you have Windows), and run some anti-scumware software.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

No, I have an iBook and Safari. I think I will just try rebooting and see what happens. Would emptying my Caches file maybe help?

kirsten (kirsten), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

This assumes you've got a windows machine and MS Explorer, of course.

That's a pretty safe assumption. What the sex ad people are really trying to tell you is to update your computer and use Firefox. They're right about that.

just quit safari

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

In Safari, go to the menu and tell it to "Block Pop-up windows." That should stop more from coming into existence. You can just quit the app (apple-Q on the keyboard, "Quit" from the main menu) and it'll close too.

mike h. (mike h.), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 19:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, set the block. Your life will be much the happier.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

no, the cache has nothing to do with it. You can go back to the Finder by clicking on the desktop or alt-tabbing back to the blue smiley mac OS face, and then use the Force Quit command from whichever menu that is.
then:

http://getfirefox.com

install the AdBlock extension

AdBlock any and all domains that do that to you in the future, for example, filter like this:

http://*.doubleclick.net/
http://*.casalemedia.net/

and so forth! It is good times.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 24 May 2005 19:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I dunno. Some day you may miss all those crotches popping up.

xpost

M. White (Miguelito), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I just restarted and did that pop-up block thing. A full minute without vag shots! Oh, this is nice. Thank you all.

kirsten (kirsten), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

If you prefer to stick with Safari, the PithHelmet extension does the same adblock thing Tom mentions. And very good times it is.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 20:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Casalemedia.net? Any relation to Bob and Jerry Casale of DEVO?

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Tuesday, 24 May 2005 20:02 (twenty-one years ago)

To be honest, I'm not sure what any of this "extension" stuff means. I just restarted and the ads aren't popping up now, but I tried doing what Tom said just to block future problems, and I couldn't find what he was talking about.
I hate feeling stupid like this!

If you go to the Safari menu, and make sure "Block Pop-Up Windows" is selected, that will prevent this from happening as much or at all.

If it keeps happening, switch to Firefox, which has the same popup blocking, but is generally kept more up-to-date.
