The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 08:42 (twenty-one years ago)

(men who think they're alpha males when really they're gamma males = dud though)

The Lex (The Lex), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 08:43 (twenty-one years ago)

hold on, what else is there for men to do except this: " "fucking and changing light bulbs / doing errands around house/car"?!!?

percypisspants, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 08:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I have a friend who thinks he’s an alpha male. All he does is but in on other conversations, talk louder than other people & act like a twat whenever a girl comes within hearing distance. Oh, and try to impress girls by putting people down in front of her. So I say DUD!

What is a text book alpha male?

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 08:56 (twenty-one years ago)

aplha males don't run errands.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I think I have only ever been attracted to one alpha male (if indeed he is one) and that's:

Archel (Archel), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 08:57 (twenty-one years ago)

N_RQ totally OTM. Alpha males run the show but do so in a way they dont get their damn hands dirty. Weak people are crap to them, they'd step over their own mother to blah blah I cant stand males or females like this. I realise they have to exist, but ugh, power does nothing for me.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 09:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i have my own perspctive, and i think power relations are a hell of a lot more complex than alpha/gamma. i'm physically quite slight, emo-looking, studious; however it's unusual for me to get alpha'd, because i'm quite good at intuiting people's weaknesses (if need be). and thinking about it, there's no such thing as an 'alpha female' unless you're easily taken in.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I know some alpha males - they are generally nasty people who wind me up the wrong way. Since making me deslike people is quite hard work, and they managed to do it without trying - DUD WHERE'S MY MOBILE?

Come Back Johnny B (Johnney B), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 09:07 (twenty-one years ago)

and thinking about it, there's no such thing as an 'alpha female' unless you're easily taken in.

Ohhhh I dunno about that. There are certainly women out there who LIKE TO THINK they are one.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Tho maybe thats what you meant.

Trayce (trayce), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

in my experience the women who act like 'alpha women' are generally in reality the most spineless... but any teen movie will tell you that.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 09:11 (twenty-one years ago)

isnt that ditto for alpha males?

percypisspants, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

the "physical" issue complicates that scheme. spineless people could still kick my ass.

N_RQ, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 09:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Argh, don't get me started on Alpha Females. Yes, they exist. And they make my life hell.

But then again, I tend not to get on with Alpha Male types either. I tend to prefer the kind of people who like to think *outside of* prehistoric monkey power systems.

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 10:57 (twenty-one years ago)

modern passive-aggressive power systems roX000rz!!

N_RQ, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 10:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Totally classic.

The opposite of an alpha male is a beta boi.

The ultimate Alpha male is Alec Baldwin's character from Glengarry Glen Ross, and I try to pattern myself after him.

The Square Root Of Negative Two (kate), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 12:30 (twenty-one years ago)

can't believe we haven't done this already. i actually don't think i know any. no close friends fit this bill. even in my family every woman like RUN TING in their houses. nans, mum, aunties etc.

what are the benefits of these alphas of whom you speak?

piscesboy, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 13:34 (twenty-one years ago)

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:

If you can dream-and not make dreams your master;
If you can think-and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two imposters just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings-nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And-which is more-you'll be a Manbison

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

They get shit done and sustain industrial progress and hold our beloved capitalistic society together -- but really, they should not be allowed in the bars/pubs. Give them the golf courses all to themselves.

Aaron A., Wednesday, 25 May 2005 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

how many greek letter types males are there? i want to know which type i'm in? like, i don't boss people around for no reason but i will stand up to things when people are being unreasonable. what greek letter is that?

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 15:25 (twenty-one years ago)

There is no heirarchy, its strictly an alpha/beta division. No point in ranking the non-alphas, cause losers are losers.

mjfan, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The alpha male type is not defined by any particular set of behavior except that they always have to be the best at something, at least in their own mind. You learn as you get older how to tolerate intrusions and lapses by justification and avoidance in your head. Non-alpha males get along pretty well with just being able to make do and are able to think about situations in other contexts besides their own abilities.

If you buy my terminology above, I suspect alpha males are more likely to become addicts, more likely to commit violent crimes, more likely to commit suicide and more likely to cheat on their spouses. In the modern world you have to spend a lot of time supressing your rule-the-roost tendencies, especially if you don't like making enemies. And any time you don't take charge of a situation, or you don't come out on top in the end, or for whatever reason you have to take a back seat to someone else, you get depressive.

I hate it!

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

This is why I can't play Pictionary.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

In its biological context, the alpha male is the one who gets to mate with all the females of his group, while the non-alpha males skulk around the edges of the group looking mopey or frustrated.

Therefore, being an alpha male would be experienced as classic by the alpha male, being boffed by an alpha male would be experienced as classic by a subservient female (meaning every female), and not being an alpha male would be experienced as dud by the non-alpha males.

This hierarchy does not map well onto humans, so the term alpha male is pretty dicey when you apply it that way. Essentially, all it means is that you think some guy is overbearing and gets away with it.

calstars, Friday, 1 December 2017 22:40 (eight years ago)

i grew up w mainly alpha males so became comfortable being around them

each male however goes through an initiation process in an alpha male controlled group w the sole purpose of turning said male into an alpha

at one point said male either turns into an alpha, steers clear of them or turns into another greek letter, most of the time gravitating to others like him

the rarest of male species is he who outsmarts the alpha male playing in their home turf, mostly playing by their rules but subverting the right ones, thereby gaining their respect, but really deciding which alpha antics to follow while w them

really he is deeply respectful of everyone

this be the sigma male
