Come tremble at the thought of Ron Howard's 'Cinderella Man' starring Russell Crowe

I've seen two trailers, and thus far I get the impression that it's going to be a big rah-rah American Capitalism Can Overcome movie, what with Crowe/Braddock's "America is the greatest" speech (despite being set in the depths of the Depression) as well as purposely ignorant of the racial issues involving a white, Irish champion hero fighting a black man. "They think you're fighting for them, Jim" says Catholic Priest (Father Coughlin) - 'they' probably not including a lot of poor black people.

John Podhoretz at the NY Post/NRO thought it was absolutely wonderful. Therefore I'm already inclined to hate.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 22:47 (twenty-one years ago)

That said, I like how this is the second in Ron and Russell's "Aim for An Oscar Movie about a New Jersey Guy" trilogy.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

i dunno it could be a Seabiscuit kind of thing too. will actually be interesting to see which direction it goes!

ryan (ryan), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Despite the fact that I frequently champion the talents of Crowe and Zellweger to many deaf ears, I will NOT be seeing this movie.

Still, it won't be as bad as Crash.

the black hand, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 22:49 (twenty-one years ago)

Both my wife and I have sworn never to see anything remotely connected with Paul Haggis ever again.

there is no way this film could not be complete bullshit

miccio (miccio), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 22:53 (twenty-one years ago)

when i saw a preview for this before kingdom of heaven the entire crowd burst out laughing at the title.

ryan (ryan), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Grrr. Why is Paul Giamatti in this? Someone give him another lead role please!

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 25 May 2005 23:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Crowe and Opie Cunningham are the worst combo currently working in mainstream movies. Insufferable dreck, non-stop.

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 25 May 2005 23:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Is he still playing Harvey Pekar too?

I cannot imagine a film that I would less like to see than this one.

That said, technology must surely bring us a film about a boxing horse sometime soon.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 26 May 2005 00:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Rusell Crowe - good
boxing - good

Russell Crowe, boxer, savior of working-class second-generation Irish-immigrant America directed by Opie - not good

haha the same thing happened when i saw the trailer too!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 26 May 2005 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

do you think russell crowe gets turned into cinderella man at the end of the movie by his evil chancellor/manager?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 26 May 2005 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

He can scream "NOOOOOOOOOO" like nobody's business.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 May 2005 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

renee zellweger dies giving birth to rocky and million dollar baby!

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 26 May 2005 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

in the TV commercial there's a quick shot of Cinderella Man getting hugged by a mob of people and his eyes are all bugging out and he looks like a spaz crossed with Cuba Gooding Jr. in Radio.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Thursday, 26 May 2005 00:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw radio :(

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 26 May 2005 00:54 (twenty-one years ago)

So did I, S1ocki. So did I.

This is totally OTM for reasons I'm not entirely sure of. The first two combined seem like a winner to me, yet the posters make me want to throw up.

cuz it's not like BOXING OO YEAH MUTHAFUCKAAAAAA its about some Bob Cratchit shit. The point is that he only boxes so he can feed his starving children, not cuz he's badass. If he was called Cinderella Man because of his footwork was so fancy and maybe his flamboyant, androgynous sense of fashion then it would be cool.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 26 May 2005 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Russell Crowe as dude from Cinderella, directed by Ron Howard, would be the most amazing...thing...ever.

Allyzay is not appropriate for freedom (allyzay), Thursday, 26 May 2005 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Just remember...EdTV. And Willow.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 May 2005 02:32 (twenty-one years ago)

i think Ron's at the point where its harder to think of the good parts. Splash, Apollo 13, maybe Night Shift & The Paper maybe...

the answer of course lies with the OPIE! and the grazer. and the goldsman (blech) script.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 26 May 2005 02:50 (twenty-one years ago)

(xxxxp)

however. because of arrested development i will always like ron howard.

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 26 May 2005 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Bah, there's an even BETTER reason to love Ron than any mere TV show. Hold on here...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 May 2005 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

are comedy oirish accents on the menu?

N_RQ, Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, yes, he is fightin' round the world.
He should make another Patrick O'Brian movie. But that will never happen.

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:26 (twenty-one years ago)

a master and commander sequel -- with added pirates -- would be awesome. will this not happen?

N_RQ, Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:28 (twenty-one years ago)

AKIVAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

David R. (popshots75`), Thursday, 26 May 2005 12:36 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think master & commander made quite enough $$ for a sequel. which sucks!! cuz that movie was really good. and there's like 20 other books to draw on right?

s1ocki (slutsky), Thursday, 26 May 2005 15:08 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Peter Weir said he was not planning on making a sequel. Which is a shame, because the ending was begging for one...

jocelyn (Jocelyn), Thursday, 26 May 2005 15:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, seeing as the story is historically accurate and Crowe actually gets hit in the fight scenes (and who doesn't want to see Russel Crowe get punched in the face), that along with the fact that I'm the biggest boxing mark on the boards leads me to believe I'll enjoy it. Sure, its not the pseudo-tragedy of Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull, but does that sort of story really need be told again? I'm not seeing a whole lot of interest in a Leon Spinks biopic.

Alan Conceicao (Alan Conceicao), Thursday, 26 May 2005 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Aw, I'd really like to see a Master & Commander sequel, not some boring earnest depression-era bullshit.

Leon Federline (Ex Leon), Thursday, 26 May 2005 18:24 (twenty-one years ago)

But would you want to see a Master & Commander sequel directed by Ron Howard?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Thursday, 26 May 2005 19:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Of course not.

Now, if it was narrated by Ron Howard it might not be that bad...

Leon Federline (Ex Leon), Thursday, 26 May 2005 19:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Speaking of which, Slocki, did you see that link I posted or what?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 May 2005 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Adam, did you post on the Crash thread? I want to read your thoughts on it.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 26 May 2005 19:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Parts of this were filmed in my neighborhood. He tied up traffic in our entire end of the city thanks to shutting down the streetcar lines for several days, filming this. DAMN HIM AND HIS FEELGOOD MOVIE.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Thursday, 26 May 2005 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

FINALLY A MOVIE THAT CELEBRATES THE INDOMITABLE SPIRIT OF WHITEY!

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 26 May 2005 20:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't like it when modern movies try to be all olde tyme-y by soaking their film in tea and giving everything a beige hue.

Je4nne ƒur¥ (Je4nne Fury), Thursday, 26 May 2005 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

the only redeemable factor I can imagine will be if there's a scene where he gets his face kicked in but good. Also I read one review that implies the villainous Craig Bierko pulls a Clubber Lang and questions Crowe's manhood and hits on his wife.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 26 May 2005 20:23 (twenty-one years ago)

though Craig Bierko telling Renee Zellweger to get with a real man isn't as great as Mr. T macking on Talia Shire.

miccio (miccio), Thursday, 26 May 2005 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

Russell Crowe in a jaunty hat out of the ring/sweating and drooling in the ring = PATRIOTISM

If we're fortunate, there will be a scene where Renee Zellwegger sits atop RC's face and pounds it into a mush as everyone watches, and when she stands up and Paul Giamatti asks her, "Why'd you do that, psycho?", she's say, "I wanted to destroy something paunchy and Australian".

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Thursday, 26 May 2005 20:25 (twenty-one years ago)

i suspect there will be too many close ups in this movie

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 26 May 2005 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

particulary, too many zellwegger reaction shots

Amateur(ist) (Amateur(ist)), Thursday, 26 May 2005 20:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Squinty dismay x1000.

Leon Federline (Ex Leon), Thursday, 26 May 2005 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe she'll get this pinched look one her face, put her hand to her mouth at a couple of moments when Cindy gets pummeled, and look away in horror. She'll confront him and say, "I can't watch you fight anymore!" And he'll get pissed, but she'll show up to one of his triumphant fights and in the end, make her way through the crowd in the ring and hug him and maybe even kiss him on the mouth, despite it being a little bloody.

Gear! (can Jung shill it, Mu?) (Gear!), Thursday, 26 May 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

if renee shaved her head i suspect dr. evil would be lurking under there

Bridget Jones's MiniMe

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 26 May 2005 20:41 (twenty-one years ago)

My favorite poster of all time is in the Clinton-Washington G stop in Brooklyn, it's a big Cinderella Man poster, you've seen the one, with Crowe's enormous sepia-toned mug almost fulling the entire frame, and the tops of his gloves poking up from the bottom, in defensive mode but ready to punch.. well, someone's written in small block letters across his cheek: "fart noises"
