it's got my name on it!!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6535053523

My dad is also called n0rman f4y, and he used to build bikes, starting in the late '60's. I'm going to ask him soon, but I'm damn sure this isn't one of them. I'm kind of freaked out, I guess I'll have to ask the seller what it is exactly, and where the connection is w/us....

THREE 'UNDRED QUID???!

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 26 May 2005 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

Norman Cycles were a Kent based company. http://www.casey.org.uk/normancycles/History.html

Are you seeing the word f4y there just cos you're used to seeing it?

Looks like quite a tidy bike, but I reckon that's way overpriced.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 26 May 2005 13:00 (twenty-one years ago)

blimey! He's changed it (I still have the page up from when I looked at it first, and -cut & paste - voila:

Norman Fay Classic 1964+ bicycle

Oh well, as you were etc.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 26 May 2005 13:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, I can see how that would have freaked you out!! Still, it'd be great to find one of your dad's frames. Did he keep one?

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 26 May 2005 13:08 (twenty-one years ago)

YOu forgot yr g00glename there.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 26 May 2005 13:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, there's a 531sl racing frame downstairs. He's completely unsentimental about it all, but I would like one of his "classic" '70's touring bikes, I must admit. When it came to building frames, he was the absolute shit, I'd put him up against anybody.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 26 May 2005 13:10 (twenty-one years ago)

It'd be a great skill to have. Ever thought about doing it yourself?

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 26 May 2005 13:16 (twenty-one years ago)

Pash a vanity google is all very well but a vanity search to try & buy yourself on eBay begins to look a trifle obsessive.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 26 May 2005 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

It is COMPLETELY uneconomical. People will just not pay a price to make it even remotely worth the effort. Even frame repairs, you can spend a whole morning doing one, you have all this expensive gear etc etc, and if you charge more than 20-25 quid they go fucking ballistic. "it's just a bit of welding work!!" a lot of cyclists, sadly especially touring cyclists are basically tightarses. This is why I sell recumbents and folders. Users of such machines almost never open their conversation w/"what's the best price you can do on..." don't get me started! Oh, you just did! ;)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 26 May 2005 13:20 (twenty-one years ago)

oi you hopkins one of my customers phoned me about it! (I guess he's after one of my dad's bikes as well)

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 26 May 2005 13:21 (twenty-one years ago)

it did say Fay!

why did he change it? all very strange...

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 26 May 2005 13:30 (twenty-one years ago)

Googling around I found a course on frame building in the states. A two week titatium tig welding course costs $2675 and you come out of it with a frame. It sounds very tempting.

Someone's going to outbid me on the snare drum that I want and it makes me sad.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 26 May 2005 13:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, don't advertise it here, and it might not happen!

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 26 May 2005 13:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Dang, there's a daisy rock red heartbreaker bass at 31 quid, no reserve and only 1 day to go. Get thee behind me, temptation!!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Thursday, 26 May 2005 13:47 (twenty-one years ago)

DRUMMERS OF ILX, DON'T HATE!

No, it's going to be the one punk who I just outbid. I'm at my limit and it's like $2 more than his last bid. I'm trying to justify bidding more because the seller is really close by, so I might be able to go pick it up instead of paying for shipping.

I know, right?, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

Ask the seller for a refund, if he or she does comply upon return of goods, negative feedback.

ian, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

Report seller to the RIAA.

eBay's contact us/customer service bit is a real farce.

Firsty you can seemingly only contact them through a set of pre-prepared questions. Tough shit if yours isn't one of those.
After finding one that vaguely suits I was allowed to email them, only to receive a whole bunch of automated answers completely unrelated to my question back via email, with a statement saying that that was the close of the matter unless I replied to them again.

Frustrated! Powerless! The silent machine cannot be reasoned with...

I can't believe no one has yet bid on this sexually aggressive haunted doll.

Women have reported the feeling of someone climbing into the bed with them at night, and of very intense sensual pleasures, per ebay rules I can not go into detail of these encounters but I can say that they have been described as nothing less than pleasurable. The women have expressed that they had not time for concern or nervous thoughts, but instead were incredibly relaxed and open to the gifts bestowed on them by this spiritual stranger.

Well, that's my mother's Christmas present sorted.

Don't these fall foul of some kind of trade description act? Unless, of course, they are really haunted.

Has anyone been having problems with ebay? At the beginning of the months we sold a camera and after the transaction was completed, item paid for and shipped, ebay or paypal held the money for two weeks. So wehn I sold records, I used paypal's shipping invoices and still the same thing, items paid for and shipped and I won't have my money until feb 2nd. Along with ebay's fees and paypal's fees, I feel like unless a item is to sell for a lot of money or you sell A LOT it's not really worth it.

JacobSanders, Friday, 20 January 2012 17:54 (fourteen years ago)

Seems like there's a lot of this going around at the moment which is worrying me slightly since I want to sell something fairly expensive on there soon...

The Eyeball Of Hull (Colonel Poo), Friday, 20 January 2012 17:58 (fourteen years ago)

was discussing some of this w/my sister over the holidays, she has sold on etsy in the past and was telling me that a lot of the folks she knows are just giving up on eBay... for sure the next lace I'm listing records for sale is Discogs, but that's just because the higher fees and postage bullshit of the Bay are too much for me already.

sleeve, Friday, 20 January 2012 19:51 (fourteen years ago)

Ebay has a fairly retarded policy where "new" sellers are not paid for something like three weeks, until all of the above: you have sold $200+ worth of items, your first sale was at least 90 days ago, and you have sold over 25 items (iirc.) This started around when I sold stuff to pay for my cat's dental work, it is a drag.

one dis leads to another (ian), Saturday, 21 January 2012 01:54 (fourteen years ago)

It's not just for new sellers now. I've met all those criteria and I've sold things for years, but paypal is holding my money for 21 days. No negative feedback whatsoever. I'm getting ready to move to another site.

elan, Sunday, 22 January 2012 15:05 (fourteen years ago)

I still love ebay, but I buy nowadays more than sell. Still have loads of fantastic stuff there. I don't really need the money anymore and I don't have any big ticket items that are worth putting up there.

I steal pictures of art from there all of the time, download and file them away.

four years pass...

sold a used football jersey that for 35 bucks (p good deal). after the auction winner won, they paid me, and weirdly a few hours later, after I'd already sent the money to my bank account and shipped the item, they asked me if I could offer it to someone else, saying their son bid on it without their permission (yet didn't explain how the money wound up being sent to me). she said she'd put it for sale online if not, and since I'd already sent it, that was that.

today, she gives me a positive rating, and then hours later sends me an email saying she was going to let her son keep it, but there's a stain that would ruin the jersey on it and is trying to get me to take it back. she weirdly says "I'm not into battles so let's be adults about this" even though I have a perfect 100% rating on eBay and haven't given her any reason to think I'm going to *battle*. The 'stain' is speck-sized, so small that I didn't see it when I examined it prior to selling it. You have to zoom in to see it, and even after zooming 500x, it's still tiny (something that might even come off in the wash). I checked the original photos I uploaded, and if you zoom in, you can faintly see it, so clearly it was there before I sent it (though I wouldn't penalize her for not seeing it in the original photo, obv, as neither did I, nor did I call it out).

she's going to try and wash it and see if it's still there. I'm guessing I should just let her return it since she could make the case that I didn't point out the speck, and even though it's small, it's probably not my place to say how 'significant' it is?

Is this allowed? Stumbled across this listing which seems to be someone selling mp3s of a major-label classical box set.

Seller seems to mainly sell sheet music PDFs... also shady...

I don't use ebay very often; is this kind of thing common?

Hans Holbein (Chinchilla Volapük), Saturday, 20 July 2019 05:02 (six years ago)

Definitely not allowed but since it's listed under CDs Ebay wouldn't catch on or care unless someone complained.
