do you get offended when morans get a crush on you?

Do you find it degrading, or does it embarass you in front of others? Or does it flatter you nonetheless?

She's never crushed on me, but I wouldn't be offended at all!

Ian Riese-Moraine's Plateau Rouge! (Eastern Mantra), Sunday, 29 May 2005 17:28 (twenty-one years ago)

It bothers me, especially because they can't take the hint that you're not interested.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 29 May 2005 17:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't really get offended because it's unusual for anyone to crush on me, and I'm too bewildering for most morans (unless they're mall-goths -- they've always liked me, unfortunately).

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 30 May 2005 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

someone should photoshop that "get a brain morans" thing so it sez "get ONE brain, morans". It would be like totally ILX.

"Mall-goths"?!
Yeah. It's a phenomena found in middle and high schools in America. Long-winded seemingly-stereotypical definition for Tuomas that I swear is true and not a parody (although it probably will seem comical, ridiculous, and exaggerated at times): Mall-goths are essentially a mutilated half-breed (sanitised for greater acceptance/easier assimilation into the fringes of American teenage hegemony) descending from the first wave of dead babies who thought it would be 1986 forever and the American hardcore punk scene blended with a pinch of metal. Now for trivial anecdotes culled from my personal dealings with their kind in order to elaborate further on the absurdity of their existence: The handful that have been attracted to me were all misguided Hot Topic and anime-loving black-clad histrionic teenage girls who were two or three years younger in age than me. Each was bisexual and into Wicca; there's nothing wrong with either but it's been increasingly popular to indulge in both of those and I'm half-convinced they're going to clean up their image, become Valium-taking housewives, and deny to themselves that they ever indulged in such shenanigans. They were under the delusion that they were unique/original/different for dressing/acting/sporting their hair differently and essentially fell under a typical faux-counterculture trapping (not that it's anything new, but if it helps me get more mileage out of the sheer ridiculousness and pretense of the spectacle the better -- for example, they wore dog collars because they thought they were cool and it made them more punky, not because they were sporting them as a gesture of protest against consumer society, although to practise such a gesture nowadays would of course prove completely empty as its effect has been sterilised). They tried to argue with me on why they considered Linkin Park to be pure Goth music and suggested I was wrong about them being a product of pop music. (Yes, yes, I know there's that argument that they're the modern-day Depeche Mode, making angst popular -- but I wasn't saying they weren't Gothic; I was suggesting they were pop and they'd argue, "No! No! Linkin Park are Goth! They're too dark to be pop! They're as Goth as it gets!") These notions and more are why they qualify as being "morans."

Ian Riese-Moraine betta run and grab your clock! (Eastern Mantra), Monday, 30 May 2005 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

Footnotes:

1. "Mall-goths" do hang out at the mall with frequency but they usually venture into Hot Topic, Gadzooks, Spencer's Gifts, Sam Goody, book stores with extensive anime/manga/hentai sections, and the googolplex theatres.
2. I didn't argue that Linkin Park were Gothic, either, and I never initiated such debate -- just for clarification's sake.

Ian Riese-Moraine betta run and grab your clock! (Eastern Mantra), Monday, 30 May 2005 17:41 (twenty-one years ago)

3. The usage of "mall" in "mall-goths" semi-intentionally implies sterilisation, sanitisation, and assimilation.

Ian Riese-Moraine betta run and grab your clock! (Eastern Mantra), Monday, 30 May 2005 17:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought the term that mall goths preferred was "food court druids."

Leslee Wright (Jacqui Pickles), Monday, 30 May 2005 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Ooh, shoot, I meant to mention the food courts!

Ian Riese-Moraine betta run and grab your clock! (Eastern Mantra), Monday, 30 May 2005 17:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually there's nothing worse than finding out that someone who might have been a potential crush is a complete fucking asshole. That's much worse than having a moran get a crush on you.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 30 May 2005 17:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Mall goths? I can top that, we have Slipknot ravers! Imagine the mall goth aesthetic, only they wear more Slipknot t-shirts and hold hands. I saw a group of two guys and some girl and all three were holding hands and walking around, wearing Slipknot t-shirts and smiling. My mind is ruined.

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 30 May 2005 17:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Out here we have Goth Farmers. They ride around in pick-up trucks and look dour.

Huk-L, Monday, 30 May 2005 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Fuck, if they held hands and smiled, the mall-goths here would qualify as such! xpost

Ian Riese-Moraine betta run and grab your clock! (Eastern Mantra), Monday, 30 May 2005 17:58 (twenty-one years ago)

mall goths are pretty much interchangable with "nu-metal kids".

latebloomer: B Minus Time Traveler (latebloomer), Monday, 30 May 2005 18:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah, we have the types of goths Ian describes too, it's just that in here only the "normal", trendy teenagers hang out in the malls, which is why the word got me confused.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 30 May 2005 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I was in a Hot Topic for the first time last week. If I were half my current age and 2/3 my current weight, I would have spent some money. A bit too much Napoleon Dynamite merch though.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Monday, 30 May 2005 18:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Going off topic a bit here, but this thread reminds me for some reason of the time when I was walking down a road with a college friend and some schoolkids were walking towards, they clocked what my friend was wearing and shouted out something at him along the lines of "Gonna sacrifice a baby to Satan, are yer?!". The item of clothing that they had seen was an Offspring T-shirt.

(Said friend had awful taste in music, but I got along very well with him despite that.)

Chriddof (Chriddof), Monday, 30 May 2005 18:45 (twenty-one years ago)

...some schoolkids were walking towards US, I should have said.

Chriddof (Chriddof), Monday, 30 May 2005 18:46 (twenty-one years ago)

mall goths are pretty much interchangable with "nu-metal kids".
Add more Apop, VNV Nation, and their likenesses and that's the only difference between the nu-metallers and mall-goths.

Ian Riese-Moraine betta run and grab your clock! (Eastern Mantra), Monday, 30 May 2005 19:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Sadly around my way, people who think they're "real" goths are all into Apop, VNV Nation, Wumpscut &c. At least you'd think so from all the shit playing in some clubs nowdays (we older crowd had to start a "swamprock" nite just to get Actual Goth Music heard, le sigh).

We call mallgoths babygoths or numetal kids - they all honestly seem to think bad pop metal such as Linkin Park, Evanesance, Manson, Rammstein etc etc are hardcore goth. You mention even something like Bauhaus or the Sisters and you get blank looks. It really is quite pathetic.

Mind you if one was crushing on me, he'd probably regret it, rather than me hate it - I'd start edumacating him.
