Eternity: Classic or Dud?

A profound philosophical idea or a useless and misleading impossibility? An inspiring spur to grasp beyond your reach or the brain fart that launched a thousand sophomoric arguments? You decide.

The second part.

Orbit (Orbit), Monday, 30 May 2005 22:21 (twenty-one years ago)

all things die, pass away, decay, etc. they are captive to time, among other things. nevertheless there are still "things" that persist in their being for however long they happen to exist. THAT mystery is the mystery of eternity: that there are things at all.

ryan (ryan), Monday, 30 May 2005 22:25 (twenty-one years ago)

life sucks and i bet there's life after death too

lollerblades, Monday, 30 May 2005 22:36 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't see how anything can be eternal. Change seems more the norm.

jim wentworth (wench), Monday, 30 May 2005 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry but I just got home from some BULLSHIT that is I guess tinily related to eternity: I went to get a broken filling fixed (a super annoying one cuz it was top-left-rear and a fragment was trapped, making flossing impossible) at 11:00am to 12:00pm, then had lunch, went BACK to the dentist for hygiene at 2:30, and the hygenist RE BROKE the fixed filling, and the dentist had to come back to re-do it (for free but fuck that) and now it's 5:00pm and my ass is still plastered to my track pants from the dentist's chair. Today is officially a writeoff so I guess it's time for weed and porno. No 24 either.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Monday, 30 May 2005 22:52 (twenty-one years ago)

If eternity doesn't exist, was it invented out of necessity?

Jetlag Willy (noodle vague), Monday, 30 May 2005 22:55 (twenty-one years ago)

I bet Jack Bauer's body is genetically geared to be ultra durable, and his teeth are nearly indestructible or at least have special armorizing CTU toothpaste. I guess he's like one of those rare street kids that have been on meth for years but look healthier than most gym rats. I bet his cock is large too, or maybe has been removed for reasons of national security.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Monday, 30 May 2005 22:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I was fond of Eternity in high school, but now I find it a little too cloying.

Leon Federline (Ex Leon), Monday, 30 May 2005 23:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know about eternity but I sure as hell love infinity, infinite quantum wells, asymptotes and other such fun loveable things.

Rufus 3000 (Mr Noodles), Monday, 30 May 2005 23:19 (twenty-one years ago)

Eternity is kind of ill-defined, innit? If you talk about eternity then you're talking about a unit of time, but by doing so you're presuming that it's not eternal. Same with forever. Or: more or less what ryan said (i think).

a good character in Dr Strange comic books, and that's about it.

oh man, i remember the profound anxiety and despair i felt when i first reflected on eternity as a kid! i called my mom on the phone in tears -- "how can it just keep going and going and not ever stop!?" she was no help at all!

jackie tretorn (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 28 June 2011 15:27 (fourteen years ago)

Every thousand years
This metal sphere
Ten times the size of Jupiter
Floats just a few yards past the earth
You climb on your roof
And take a swipe at it
With a single feather
Hit it once every thousand years
Till you've worn it down
To the size of a pea
Yeah I'd say that's a long time
But it's only half a blink
In the place you're gonna be

I was getting "eternity rulez" drilled into my head from day 1 so I don't recall ever having any crises about infinity specifically

jackie tretorn (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 28 June 2011 15:30 (fourteen years ago)

I think it was the premature exposure to Revelations that did my little head in. It must be horrible to weep and gnash your teeth for eternity, you'd think with enough gnashing you'd eventually rid yourself of teeth, but not if the gnashing is eternal!

conceptually classic, dud in reality - just ask the Vision, it was pretty crappy for him when he survived the infinity gauntlet in some issue of What If?

eternity is just a massive cop-out from god, created during his prog phase.

like elmo, i was bothered by eternity & infinity as a kid, though not to the point of tears. this was when i was between 12 and maybe 15 or 16, my peak sci-fi years. anyway, i thought about these ideas a lot, trying in some way to conceptualize them, but never really could, of course. to conceptualize is to contain, which misses the point right off the bat. the best i could do was to realize that "forever" and "a long time" are almost unrelated concepts, that eternity is a thing that exists outside time, to the extent that it can be said to exist at all.

in that sense, all those mormon advice posters miss the point, too. one cannot injure eternity. in being eternal it must be essentially inviolable, holding every possibility and untroubled by any single thing. and we only think of it as a long time because we are ourselves timebound, thus not of eternity. you can't measure it, so that sort of language is basically meaningless.
