How did Ice Cube have a family comedy movie in this year's top five moneymaker list...

...without anyone (well,me, at least) noticing? I ask this because over at Box Office Mojo it clearly lists Are We There Yet? as currently being at number five (for now, the summer blockbusters will change all this rapidly enough) behind Star Wars, Hitch, Robots and the vaguely similar 'get a star from the xXx franchise to appear in a kid's movie' effort The Pacifier -- and at least I heard about The Pacifier. I only first heard about Are We There Yet? due to a view bus ads touting its DVD appearance a week or so ago, and thought it was some direct-to-DVD effort. At $32 million with the budget and making back $100 million worldwide in theaters it might even turn into a franchise if the DVD really takes off.

Did anyone see this film or have a young relative who saw it? Dare I even ask?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Bah, them italics. Carry on, please.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw it on a plane last week. I'd never heard of it before. It was the type of movie that requires no sound to watch and looked pretty terrible. I was half-asleep and only occasionally watching, but it did make me laugh despite myself more than once.

So long as he doesn't hold the gun to my head insisting the tie is blue, I have no problems.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:30 (twenty-one years ago)

one of my best recent tv experiences was seeing cube in that lil jon vid from crunk juice where his DISEMBODIED HEAD is attempting to be all "fuck teh police"-era scary. and then seeing the commercial for the are we there yet? dvd commercial when they then went to break.

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:31 (twenty-one years ago)

commercial commercial commercial

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Ice Cube is a pretty decent draw in general. If you can make that translate to the child/family demographic, then you can make a lot of money. I guess what separates him from Vin Diesel is that Ice Cube is coherent, often funny and not an obvious douchebag.

I didn't see it but I was very aware of it. Do you watch much programming on TV channels where black family comedies are advertised, Ned?

Community Cornerstone (deangulberry), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I didn't see it but I was very aware of it.

Referring to the movie, of course ... I saw that douchebag Vin Diesel coming from a mile away.

Community Cornerstone (deangulberry), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, this is not really a new avenue for cube. or at least it's a reasonable step on. did you not see barbershop, ned?

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:41 (twenty-one years ago)

TV, what is that? (Though I do catch bits of it often enough as I'll note below.) I'll say this -- a month earlier than when Are We There Yet? came out I couldn't escape Fat Albert ads and promo posters both in LA and OC; similarly with The Pacifier when it came out later. The fact that I'm only seeing posters for Are We There Yet? now might be telling, I suppose.

(I agree with you on the Diesel douchebaggery in that I ended up catching a clip of said film at my sandwich place one morning -- they always have the TV on and I tend see whatever the latest movie bits and ads are as a result -- and thought, "COME COME NUCLEAR BOMB" or something similar.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

i remember seeing a ton of ads for are we there yet? cuz i remember thinking it's basically bebe's kids right?

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, this is not really a new avenue for cube. or at least it's a reasonable step on. did you not see barbershop, ned?

I must clarify! I'm not SURPRISED he did this film at all, heavens no, it's a perfectly logical step. Rather, I'm surprised at the existence of a hit movie that I didn't even know existed until two weeks ago. I didn't recall anyone mentioning it on the xXx thread as a random comparison point in terms of his recent work, maybe I just blipped over that.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

omg blount otm re. bebe's kids

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, that's a good comparison point. Man, why did Robin Harris have to die?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:48 (twenty-one years ago)

HAHA BEBE'S KIDS

Now that I think about it, I can't recall seeing any print/poster ads for this movie, but then again, family movies tend to not spend a lot on posters and/or I wouldn't see many print ads for family movies. I remember the shit out of that TV commercial though.

it was kind of awesome. almost all of them accused me of being on drugs ("you must have been high to think that..." "guess you were too busy smoking marijuana to notice..." "go back to your bong...") and the one letter i got in support was like "thanks for writing that awesome review! you really stood up for the stoners, man!"

WTF!

I saw the Are We There Yet? trailer for months, as it kept getting pushed back. I think it was actually on before The Aviator, which makes me question the wisdom of someone's marketing dept..

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:51 (twenty-one years ago)

And, without giving anything away, Lucas totally cops out of the one truly disturbing moment the movie could have had.

Was this touched upon in the SW thread? Or can you explain that here? I'm curious..

Community Cornerstone (deangulberry), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd figure that was the Anakin-chops-up-the-kids moment. (But I actually like that it wasn't shown, just creepily implied.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh yeah! I would've enjoyed that scene as well. I agree that they shouldn't have shown it, but he could've added a few more seconds to that scene that would've made it have more of an impact. I'm thinking blood splattering against a wall; squeals; the galaxy's tiniest light saber falls to the ground... etc etc

Community Cornerstone (deangulberry), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 03:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I really wanted Anakin to cleave one of those kids in half like in Conan the Librarian.

Actor Sizemore fails drug test with fake penis (jingleberries), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 03:34 (twenty-one years ago)

You just know that was going to be Lucas's original plan for the fate of Jar Jar because we were all supposed to see it as a sad moment of Anakin's loss of innocence etc. But then he realized later that this would make Anakin a remarkably untragic hero.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 03:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I really wanted Anakin to cleave one of those kids in half like in Conan the Librarian.

They called the kids "younglings." If I hadn't already decided this was the stoopidest shit on the planet, that would have done it. "Oh, he killed the younglings. Oh!"

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

I was used to that already, though, Yoda called them that in Attack of the Clones. I agree it's goofy.

Yeah, that's totally unrealistic. If you could die of sadness, that movie would have no repeat business.

Community Cornerstone (deangulberry), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 04:26 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah right. I just figure that the medical robot was blowing smoke.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 04:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i thought that would really be his shocking conversion to the dark side, not wasting a bunch of kids we've never seen before offscreen!

Icing on the cake. OF DARKNESS.

Yeah, that's totally unrealistic. If you could die of sadness, that movie would have no repeat business.
Erm, no, she doesn't die of heartache. My mother and I were watching Episodes IV-VI last night and realised the emperor actually killed her to prevent Vader from betraying him (remember, Anakin said to Padme that he could overthrow the emperor and then he and Padme would rule the galaxy).

Jimmy Mod, I'd have to pick the Cool World soundtrack over Bebe's Kids. Or maybe you meant the movie vs. Bebe's Kids? (I haven't seen the former film, but grew up with the soundtrack.)
