My roommates just moved and they took the tv and now I am very lonely.

I think I need a new TV. How much are they these days? I should probably get a little model with a built in DVD player, eh?

I don't think I can be a living without tv kind of person. I just need the company of voices, I think.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Ditto. This happened to me just a few days ago. I am slowly losing it.

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:07 (twenty-one years ago)

you guys are welcome to come watch tv in washington dc anytime. we love it here. miss universe was just on! and soon law and order... at least you have the internet to fill your head with voices?

carly (carly), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:08 (twenty-one years ago)

GO OUTSIDE

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

a tv with a built in dvd player sounds terrible! i wouldn't want to have to replace my tv every couple of years.

shine headlights on me (electricsound), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:09 (twenty-one years ago)

there are voices on the radio too

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm outside all day! I have proof! This is what I did yesterday!

music! listen to music!

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

You drew a red line on a mountainside?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:11 (twenty-one years ago)

That's me in the corner. See the confused look on my face? "Where'd that red line come from? Christ, I'm just a tree, this is all too much. I hope someone cuts me down."

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Who do you think we are, murderers?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Well. Yes.

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:13 (twenty-one years ago)

You need at least a 51-inch plasma TV. No less is acceptable.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

I suggest reading a book of short stories. they're great! it's literature for people who watch too much TV and have retardedly short attention spans. I recommend this one:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1400034825/002-1686832-1848006?v=glance

I'm just about to finish reading it. great stories in there!

Mickey (modestmickey), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i was going to try and see if i could go tvless for a few months but after 24 hours only the withdrawal symptoms are strong!

i just realized that thanks to the magic of the tube, i haven't had to be alone with my thoughts for well over a year. i'm afraid of what they might turn out to be.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

i just keep the tv on all the time to keep myself company, even when i work on papers or articles or read books, usually.

i have lots of books to read, but without the tv it just isn't the same.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:16 (twenty-one years ago)

This might perhaps explain why I don't need TV or anything approaching a regular diet of it myself -- I'm very content to be alone with my thoughts.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Mickey (modestmickey), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

i didn't bring my tv to arizona, and my roommates' tv is in the living room (i'm not really a "hanging out in the living room" kinda person), and it doesn't have any good channels anyway. but that's ok, if i need to watch a particular program i can usually download it from somewhere.

The Pinup Girls of YANK (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Make a website!

Write a novel!

Take up exercise or go to tai chi or something!

Housework!

Always plenty to do, especially when no one gets in yr way socially.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i just ate two big delicious pork chops i fried up, but without law and order it just wasn't the same...

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Take up exercise or go to tai chi or something!

the gym near my house has a $99-per-year membership! in nyc that's what you pay for A MONTH. but i've been doing so much walking that i don't need no stinkin' gym.

hstencil (hstencil), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

see this is a situation where it could be quite handy to have voices in your head

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Invite friends over. Preferably non-autistic speaking friends.

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:29 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think I can be a living without tv kind of person. I just need the company of voices, I think.

Can you turn on radio or a CD? Although I understand the Law & Order thing- Boy is completely addicted to that show, and has even gotten me slightly interested in it. I refuse to own a TV since I barely have enough time every day to do things that I can't imagine wasting an hour of it sitting in front of a TV. Things I did today instead of watching TV: read another chapter of the book on Buddhism I've been working on; goof around on ILX; play frisbee; skateboarded to Magnolia and home (highlight, flicking off the boys who yelled 'you skate like a girl at me'); got paged twice & so did a bit of work; made my bed (!!!!); bought cute pink sneakers for my neice; cooked dinner with my friend and watched our dogs chase each other around.

Actually, I did check my friend's replay TV when I was down there to see if there were any saved episodes of I Love the 90s, but there were no new ones on it.

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:35 (twenty-one years ago)

I tried going without and caved in.

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I've gone long stretches without, for sure...but never when I was
A: unemployed
B: living alone
C: broke as fuck
D: living in the middle of nowhere (which does have its advantages. see red line.)

giboyeux (skowly), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know exactly what a "plasma" TV is, but I like the thought that it is powered by the superheated state of matter that is beyond gas. If you know the real answer, do not correct me.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:47 (twenty-one years ago)

i live alone and went without a telly for about 6 months a couple of years ago. i got awesome marks at uni that semester and also developed a love of the radio. my dad bought me a second hand telly in the end despite my protests as he felt so sorry for me having no telly. or alternatively, because he was staying with me and couldn't bear to be unable to watch the footy. actually it was the latter. anyway, i like having it but now i don't feel like i need to watch it at all. if i were just having it on for the company, i'd rather have the radio on.

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

My parents raised my sister and I with no TV (only a little bit of PBS every so often) which means I miss every single 80s cartoons reference ever. My sister is now raising her little girl the same- she's almost 2 and has never seen anything on TV other than home videos. Their only TV is down in the basement, way out of the way. I had a couple conversations with her about how we hated our parents for the no TV thing in high school and when we were in college, but now that we're old geezers, we never watch it. Apparently my parents won.

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:59 (twenty-one years ago)

(oh. plasma - One of four states of matter (solid, liquid, plasma and gas). The plasma state is a gas that is heated to the point where it begins to release electrons. Although plasma occurs naturally on the sun and other stars, it is artificially produced in fluorescent lights and plasma displays by electrically charging a gas in order to release ultraviolet light. See plasma display. So it's the same thing. I feel dumb.)

slightly more subdued (kenan), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 03:04 (twenty-one years ago)

you feel dumb? i thought plasma was something out of ghostbusters. guess i don't know much about tellies hey, i don't think i've ever heard of a plasma tv. is that the same as a flatscreen? it's all so confusing.

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 03:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know exactly what a "plasma" TV is

Really? As in, you have never seen those giant widescreen HDTVs in shops that look a bit like computer LCD screens on steroids?

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

argh xpost.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 03:10 (twenty-one years ago)

i can answer that too... errrr no? i don't go to shops that sell tvs though

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

No, Trayce, I know what it *is*, I just didn't know how it works. But I just looked that up, too. It's really dull. I knew it would be. Which I guess is why I fancied the supereated idea in the first place.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

superheated, even

slightly more subdued (kenan), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 03:12 (twenty-one years ago)

ain't it great when I just pop up on threads and start totally talking out my ass about nothing at all?

slightly more subdued (kenan), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 03:13 (twenty-one years ago)

It's the essence of ILX. Isn't like 90% of this board talking out of your ass about nothing at all?

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

i appreciate your vote of... something.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 03:14 (twenty-one years ago)

those big plasma tvs are gross-looking. i never needed anything more than the tiny sylvania tv my parents bought me in 1986. if only it still worked...

The Pinup Girls of YANK (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 03:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The general consensus I've read is, dont buy a plasma telly anyway - get an LCD one. Plasma ones tend to go on the fritz quite easily, which when youre spending upward of 3grand on one, is not great.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 03:20 (twenty-one years ago)

okay, i want to move into this ad, and i want w.d. godfrey and mrs. d. gruden to adopt me.

The Pinup Girls of YANK (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Why buy anything but HDTV if you're going to sink that kind of money into a television? They got 'em at Circuit City for a little over a grand now, and getting cheaper all the time.

slightly more subdued (kenan), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 03:21 (twenty-one years ago)

sterl this happened to me but then once i moved into a new place with a tv (after say a month or so of no tv) i found i no longer really wanted to see it. i mean, kind of, but not in a big way. i have even started watching old buffy episodes on dvd without especially caring what's on the real tv.

(sad to find out that while i wasn't paying attention they cancelled the new law and order show tho.)

Josh (Josh), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah surely as long as you've internet you dont need tv anyway? I went over a year without tv and didnt miss it.

Mind you I developed a bit of a drinking problem but thats by the by.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 05:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I am cancelling my Comcast cable TV service tomorrow! I'm pretty excited. It's only $60/mo, so it's not a money issue ... we'll see how long I last.

Community Cornerstone (deangulberry), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 05:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I haven't had a TV for four years or more. Back in 2000 or 2001 I gave my TV set to friend who had more use for it. Admittedly, the decision was rather easy because I hadn't watched the telly that much even before that. The commune I now live in actually does have a TV, but I never watch it. For those evenings when I'm not in the mood of seeing friends nor doing something serious, like studying, I borrow some light reading from the library: comics, popular history, movie and music books, etc. I've actually learned quite a lot stuff due to the fact of not having a TV set.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 06:35 (twenty-one years ago)

i think ive become one of those people, you know, the ones who dont want a tv in the house. i think i'd rather get rid of it (in a shared house, so cant do this obv). im not proud of this, but i seem to have moved past being one of those people who dont watch tv, and into one of those people who find that black box in the corner kind of annoying

charltonlido (gareth), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 07:25 (twenty-one years ago)

The TV is a portal through which comes University Challenge, Channel 4's Cricket coverage and BBC documentaries about hummingbirds.

.

.

and CSI.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 08:21 (twenty-one years ago)

hey, my TV broke about a week and a half ago. i'm overjoyed tbh. i do miss watching DVDs but i'm in no way miffed about no telly. sure, i'll get another one soon enough, but this period of no-TVdom is quite refreshing. grasp the nettle, yo!

g-kit (g-kit), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 08:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I have three TVs in my house and never watch them. Well, I do use the one with the DVD player (besides the regular oneone's a small TV in my mother's room and the other's a TV for my brother to play video games on -- actually, we've got a black-and-white 7" TV in a box, too) but I don't even watch the channels we pick up on the antenna. We haven't had cable in about four years.
