Why can't we have an American version of Eurovision?

I really know almost nothing about Eurovision, but I am jealous of the concept and would like to have an American version with participants from different states battling it out with their incredibly cheezy and awful songs. Maybe we could be nice and invite performers from Canada and various Latin American countries to perform as well. Would this work? Would people watch it? And wouldn't it be cool?

Is Eurovision more about songs and less about performers?

only if you would still read out the scores in french as well as english.

it's mostly about the scoring part and terry wogan

Everything I know about Eurovision I learned from Father Ted.

nil points > costumes > wogan

and grandmama's drums with the mallet in her big house.

eurovison will only work if most people don't really take it seriously - i cannot see it happening in america.

Non! I don't think it would be the same without the strenuous European efforts to shoe-horn just a little bit of whatever country's traditional culture into the song. But maybe this would take the form of some duelling banjo action in the Alabama entry or whatever.

That's how I envision it, there is so much STATE PATRIOTISM in the US that I think it could work. California could have a fuzz guitar solo in their song, Michigan would have a techno beat, etc.

But the repeating everything in French? You're not Canadian, dude, how would you replicate the joy that comes from that?

Do certain US states stick together/hate each other enough for this? (I do not know enough about America to answer this). You need to be able to predict exactly which state will give 10 points to which (the way the Greece/Cyprus vote goes, for example).

I'd rather there weren't any sorts of regional biases! I mean COME ON CYPRUS!

David R. (popshots75`), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 14:41 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah you'd totally need the factions! scandinavia! baltic states! uk/ireland! greece/cyprus!

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

it should be called amerrovision, of course.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 15:20 (twenty-one years ago)

now that sort of smacks of 'error', dunnit not?

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

exactly

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

C J (C J), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Would they still have silly song titles though (Boom-Bang-A-Bang and the like?)

C J (C J), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

They should, dude!

Incidentally, I was looking up the band Monaco on Soulseek but kept finding the principality of Monaco's entries into Eurovision available for download. I'm tempted.
