Has anybody seen Steamboy yet? Should I take my son to see it?

Judging by the previews, I'm thinking it's something he'll enjoy, but I know that A) it's kinda long, and B) it's by the guy who did Akira, which wasn't necessarily a not-nightmare inducing film.

Of course, his mom took him to see Star Wars Ep. 3: Anakin Gets Chopped The Fuck Up, which he apparently didn't take too much to heart, so I'm currently leaning in the "yeah" direction.

Plus, it's, like, playing here in town right now, and I don't think it's one of those huge theatrical release kinda dealies.

I like your alternate title there. (And welcome back!)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 18:06 (twenty-one years ago)

I asked him what he thought of that Star Wars movie, he said: "they chopped up that guy!".

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 18:16 (twenty-one years ago)

hahaha

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 18:17 (twenty-one years ago)

Dude I saw it on Sunday. It's good and Lucas would love it!

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 18:18 (twenty-one years ago)

haha I was gonna see if you wanted to go with us this weekend. I hope it's still playing by then!

He's really into stuff right now where the title is also the main character. I imagine this will continue into the teens.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 18:21 (twenty-one years ago)

haha OTM

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 18:23 (twenty-one years ago)

It's really good! There's lots of ACTION but not much VIOLENCE. It's sort of Miyazaki-ish. Not as mind-blowing as Akira, but featuring much less blood/entrails/mushroom clouds/rape, and more adorable sidekicks. Probably the best we-fear-technology-and-violence-but-isn't-it-cool-to-watch type movie since T2.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:02 (twenty-one years ago)

N.B. It's much better than T2.

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, excellent, lots-of-action-but-not-much-violence is EXACTLY the kind of thing I was hoping for.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The son/father/grandfather story is good for MALE PATTERN BONDING. Honestly, I can't see how kid could not like it. All the action involves motorcycles, trains and flying.

Zebra, Alpha Go! (cprek), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

No. It was terrible. And it will cause your son to have seizures.

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Seizures of JOY

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Does it make any narrative sense?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, to say it makes more sense than Akira would be faint praise/damning, but yeah, it does, mostly. At least, no one turns into a massive, stadium-filling BRANE at the end for no reason this time. (Sorry, spoiler.)

Chuck_Tatum (Chuck_Tatum), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 20:26 (twenty-one years ago)

oh fuck that then, now i'm not going to see it...

kingfish maximum overdrunk (Kingfish), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 23:12 (twenty-one years ago)

A bloated, indulgent, over-animated mess is what it was, and no, it doesn't make much sense. It does, however, feature a 45-minute sequence of steam-blasts and explosions, each louder and more irritating and than the last

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 23:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, this sucks ass! The Kentucky Theater has already taken it off the schedule. :(

Guess we'll have to go see, like, MADAFRIGGINGASCAR or something. *triple frowny face*

two months pass...
It started like Charles Dickens, then gradually slurred into a bizarre mix of Godzilla, Star Wars, Ben Hur, Independence Day, Sherlock Holmes, Titanic and Kimba the White Lion. After a while, you brain just started going 'I'm teapot, teapot, doo-doo-doo-doo' just to endure the endless explosions, madly over-emoted monologues and heroic orchestral drama music. Steam was contantly escaping from every corner of the film and it graudally drove you mad with irritation. The arguments against unbridled scientific ambition which studded the film like were best met by the existence of the film itself. It looked good - especially the machine movement animation and the contraptions - but that was nowhere near enough to compensate for the agony of enduring the rest of it.

Rachael's verdict: 'A shocker. I'm glad that shit's over'.

moley, Monday, 22 August 2005 11:42 (twenty years ago)

Now we've just discovered that there's a second DVD with the one we rented, called 'The Making of Steamboy'. Like FUCK we're going to watch that one.

moley, Monday, 22 August 2005 11:46 (twenty years ago)

Moley OTM. After it was over I was just pissed off that I'd given 2 hours to Akira 2: Gotcha, Suckers!

Rock Hardy (Rock Hardy), Monday, 22 August 2005 11:50 (twenty years ago)

Steam was contantly escaping from every corner of the film and it graudally drove you mad with irritation.

This is so OTM.
