Nature recordings C/D

OK, I downloaded a nature recording to kill some of the background noise of the library. It's pounding surf. And a bird. For an hour. There is no instrumentation at all.

Somebody actually has to make these. Am I using it correctly? How do you review one these? I saw that there are field recordings of like "Walking in the Bronx" or something. Who buys that?

I actually test-listened to the whales and dolphins one. I decided it was too distracting.

There was one "Cape Cod Morning," I'd like to make one of the sound of bumper to bumper traffic idling on 6A, with honking cars and shrieking children.

i like insects quite a bit. and rainstorms. both are very sooting and nocturnal.

Eric La Casa's nature recordings are completely amazing but aren't good as background - they have a real narrative drive to 'em

White noize.

Soothing sounds it isn't, interrupted on every track by an old creaky old herpetologist, but Sounds of North American Frogs is a wonderful nature album.

Quiet American has some nice field recordings, a lot of old stuff from Vietnam.

Rhodia (Rhodia), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I find them very dull, but not as horrible as the recordings of pretty classical music with nature sounds over them. You fools! Don't ruin the music!

Classic: George Winston's Forest, I think it's called. Sounds like a nature tape, but it's just a piano.

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

sounds of north american frogs is great.

The thunderstorm CDs they used to sell at Target are classic. Not classic in the sense that I'd ever sit there and listen to them, but their existence is nice enough.

my friend uses one of a beach in hawaii to fall asleep. he used to use one of them thar wave machines but was able to pick out the pattern in it, which prevented his brain from going into chill mode.
dismissing them as dull is missing the point.

Don't play thunderstorms or waterfalls in a crowded record store. Trust me.

I don't particularly like the nature recording ones - but I do have a nice line in 'Memories of Steam' LPs (which are steam trains - although they're kind of natural - they do have sheep bleating in the distance).

yeah, I think mine's the same one, it's Tropical Surf. My review is that it's pretty good at low volume, but at high volume, it's kinda excellent. The bird noises drop out and it's low end rumbling galore.

Ok, I got another one that is "Dawn Chorus," in the jungle at dawn. The blurb promises a thunderstorm too, and there isn't one, I'm pissed off about that. Far worse, at two random moments some fucking creature screams in apparent agony, very loudly in the near distance. It sounds like a human, sort of. And I nearly wet my pants, holy fuck...

(It reminded me of that Where's Waldo knockoff that someone posted to ILX way back in the day, the puzzle that suddenly screams at you).

"Rainforest Soundwalks" is pretty great, lots of squawking birds, jungle vibe

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 14:31 (twenty-one years ago)

haha hunter do you think they actually recorded the jungle at dawn?

Maria (Maria), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

my mom used to give my brother & i nature tapes to fall asleep to when we were young. the amazon was one of my favorites, as was whale songs & thunder storms. then we graduated to hypnosis tapes where we got to imagine our own beautiful lands . . .

i've done some nature recording, to experiment with using a stereo mic & honestly, i love listening to the tape i gathered that day. it's rich & so completely ordinary. i recorded it early early in the morning & the world is just waking up & birds are chattering to each other, although it's mostly red-winged blackbirds.

a woman i occasionally work with bought a house out in the middle of nowhere & she's going to put microphones in the walls to collect the sounds from outside, which i think is one of the coolest ideas.

kelsey (kelstarry), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

"Muggings in the Park at Dawn." I thought those "chik chik chik chik chkchkchkchkchk chik chik chik" sounds were crickets, but they were just the lawn sprinklers.

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

I'd buy a copy of "Suburban Summer Afternoon" just for the lawnmowers.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 19:49 (twenty-one years ago)

My dad has a bunch of these, but hasn't actually listened to any of them for about 20 years.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

To complement the lawnmowers and for full soporific effect, you also need to have the sound of golf on TV low in the mix.

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe an ice cream truck far off in the distance

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 20:19 (twenty-one years ago)

With the right equipment, I can totally record this for you.

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

For trade, I can record the sound of airplanes landing, screeching birds, and general roar of industry. Well, we have ice cream trucks, too.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 20:24 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm gonna sit outside with a camera this weekend and try to catch a picture of my house, with the tv visible showing golf inside, and in the reflection of said window, my neighbor cutting the lawn. WHILE an ice cream truck whizzes by. That'll be your album cover.

Hunter (Hunter), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 20:33 (twenty-one years ago)

deal.

The Sensational Sulk (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 1 June 2005 20:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Nature/field recordings interspersed with music (a la Virginia Astley's From Gardens Where We Feel Secure or parts of Cul de Sac's Death of the Sun): classic.
