OMG are you fucking KIDDING me?
I'm going to have to pass by that thing 4 times a day? More if you count dog walks?
Wait a sec though, when did the buildings to the right of Kellogg's get sold?

― tehresa, Saturday, 28 July 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)
they got sold recently, a friend of mine is getting evicted. as is flyrite tattoos.
― hstencil, Saturday, 28 July 2007 17:39 (eighteen years ago)
Thanks, Teh.
I mean... almost every block between my bldg and the BQE is partially levelled and under development, so I've been envisioning the glassy futurescape, but that rendering is way beyond anything I'd imagined.
The food at kellogg's kinda sucks. But maybe I should start eating there once a week to fund dude's refusal to sell.
― Jon Lewis, Saturday, 28 July 2007 17:40 (eighteen years ago)
hah i back up his not wanting to sell but yeah, that is like, the worst diner in the history of the planet.
― tehresa, Saturday, 28 July 2007 17:41 (eighteen years ago)
kellogg's is fucking terrible, you couldn't pay me to eat there. plus, there was that whole cop-getting-stabbed there thing, kind of a turnoff.
jon you live near me i guess?
― hstencil, Saturday, 28 July 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)
My bldg (30 units) is on the market technically but for way more than anyone has so far wanted to pay, considering the shabby shape it's in. Talk is that the owner knows any buyer's just gonna tear it down so he's priced it unrealistically for sentimental reasons.
― Jon Lewis, Saturday, 28 July 2007 17:43 (eighteen years ago)
xpost across from the Shell station over by Lucky 7 Diner and El Canario
Yeah, maybe instead of eating at Kellogg's I'll just make a point of buying all my toilet paper there.
― Jon Lewis, Saturday, 28 July 2007 17:44 (eighteen years ago)
ah no shit! i'm not too far from there, on leonard. my building is also on the market but everything's been quiet since the owner listed it in december. he is converting the first floor and basement into a duplex tho. ;_;
― hstencil, Saturday, 28 July 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)
Since december? That's a while. Maybe he priced it too high too.
― Jon Lewis, Saturday, 28 July 2007 17:47 (eighteen years ago)
he priced it way high considering it's a piece of shit, yeah. my roommate was gonna buy it and got as far as inspection, where the engineer was like "you'd have to put another $500k in this place to bring it up to code." nobody's gonna buy it anytime soon.
― hstencil, Saturday, 28 July 2007 17:49 (eighteen years ago)
Thank god for landlords and their inflated ideas about what their shitholes are worth.
The top floor stairway is a waterfall here when it rains now, rendering the bldg even more unappealing.
― Jon Lewis, Saturday, 28 July 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)
Of course if things go far enough in that direction I suppose we could get condemned...
― Jon Lewis, Saturday, 28 July 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)
i can't wait for the day when our new first floor neighbors realize they're living in what used to be a dry-cleaning business.
― hstencil, Saturday, 28 July 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)
polar bears really do depreciate the value of a house.
― tehresa, Saturday, 28 July 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)
that too!
hey jon, i wouldn't be surprised if that part of grand got really ridiculous in the next few years tho.
― hstencil, Saturday, 28 July 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)
this is making me rather excited about my eventual move to p. heights!
― tehresa, Saturday, 28 July 2007 17:55 (eighteen years ago)
you know, until the stadium/arena whatever ruins everything
― tehresa, Saturday, 28 July 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)
i was gonna say, prospect heights is probably even more expensive! but that restaurant there, beast, is pretty good.
― hstencil, Saturday, 28 July 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)
beast is awesome. i think it's not any more expensive than here, and slightly cheaper on occasion. it's just soooo pretty and not *quite* as bad with the condos, etc.
― tehresa, Saturday, 28 July 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)
more expensive to buy, tho. not that anyone i know is gonna be buying anytime soon. not as bad with the condos either, true, since it's in a more "historic" area.
― hstencil, Saturday, 28 July 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)
Our bldg is cheap by the standards of any neighborhood in Brooklyn, so we're sticking to our guns until forced out. So I will bear witness to the transformation into Ballardian metacivilization.
Jealous of Prospect heights idea though...

OMG THE NEIGHBORHOOD HAS CHANGED SOOO MUCH YOO GUYZ !!!!!
― jhøshea, Saturday, 28 July 2007 18:23 (eighteen years ago)
favorite story which i probably have recounted before on ilx:
wburg roommate's girlfriend moves nearby from deepest Queens. for six months she is shyly quiet when people complain about "all the gentrifiers moving in" and how "the neighborhood's changing, maaan". after those six months passed she joined their choruses with great vigor.
― sanskrit, Saturday, 28 July 2007 18:32 (eighteen years ago)
kinda like jon williams?
― hstencil, Saturday, 28 July 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)
no offense everyone but gentrification complaining is in the upper reaches of repulsive new yorkisms
― jhøshea, Saturday, 28 July 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)
lol
― sanskrit, Saturday, 28 July 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)
heh, couldn't resist.
― hstencil, Saturday, 28 July 2007 18:37 (eighteen years ago)
I'm not complaining about gentrification. It's inevitable. I'm complaining about hideously butt ugly buildings.
― Jon Lewis, Saturday, 28 July 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)
yeah the ugliness of that building + its location bug me more than any vague concerns about gentrification, that's for sure.
like who would pay tons of money to live next to a highway?
― hstencil, Saturday, 28 July 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)
for the last time u guys, jon does not live in wburg!!!!
i don't really complain cause i know i'm part of the problem (see "your place" thread on nb)
― tehresa, Saturday, 28 July 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)
And naturally I want to continue living in the cheap bldg I'm in. Why wouldn't I?
― Jon Lewis, Saturday, 28 July 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)
tehresa jw's been complaining about gentrification probably before he even lived in nyc. it's funny.
― hstencil, Saturday, 28 July 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)
and you don't get much more of a pass if you live in bushwick, either.
that building is shit, but it would be a frigging masterpiece over here in hoboken when compared to the other shitty/generic condos being slapped up.
― Eisbaer, Saturday, 28 July 2007 18:52 (eighteen years ago)
uh williamsburg is already a museum of ugly buildings
― jhøshea, Saturday, 28 July 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)
yeah the condos being built in williamsburg are just so poorly constructed and thrown up without and thought or care, just make sure it has all new chrome appliances and don't even bother to put insulation in the walls. if i were going to spend that money kind of money to spend i would look for something substantial and energy efficient not a little box with giant windows you have to heat/air condition into oblivion.
― bell_labs, Saturday, 28 July 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)
it's funny to think that if there was some kind of natural disaster williamsburg will be completely leveled while most of the brownstone/townhouses could withstand a nuclear attack.

I can't pretend to know much about New York real-estate, but given the hype-pieces in The New York Times about Bushwick and the frequency I tend to hear Bed-Stuy referenced as a hipster enclave, I would imagine that they would be prime investment spots for cashing in on the upswing of gentrification.
― sub rosarie, Monday, 24 January 2011 00:18 (fifteen years ago)

all these real estate / exchange rate calculations are not as simple as they might seem you have to account for all sorts of arcane economic/monetary factors, itd take a young einstein to really understand it all

― ice cr?m, Monday, 24 January 2011 01:08 (fifteen years ago)
like, idk, it was def. a lot cheaper to go drinking in than ireland, esp w/ 24 public transport meaning u dont have to get a taxi everywhere and rent was way less than dublin. i wouldnt really recommend ireland as a place to live or go ever tho maybe.
― plax (ico), Monday, 24 January 2011 01:11 (fifteen years ago)
yeah i could see how that might make yr uh i dont hair stand on end
― ice cr?m, Monday, 24 January 2011 01:13 (fifteen years ago)
i mean its not like its a cheap city but there's def options, problem w. living in ireland is there's always like a *set price* and u can't really get around it.

David and Larissa Sneckel, aged 45 and 37 respectively, have a 6-year-old son and a 3-year-old daughter. "Windsor Terrace is a great neighborhood," Larissa says. "The schools are good, it feels safe, and Prospect Park is great for our kids." She pauses. "But I look around, and I see all these..." She pauses again, screwing up her face as if she's just bit into a lemon, searching for the right word. "PARENTS." Parents? Larissa laughs. "I know it sounds crazy. But we really hate ourselves, and we project that hatred onto others who share our background and tastes."
― progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Monday, 24 January 2011 12:02 (fifteen years ago)

That's actually not why I searched this thread -- I just wanted to ask what people think about all the insane development around McCarren Park and the Bedford area, especially that one giant building with the sun god logo thingy on it but really all of them. Do people live in most of these buildings? Are they actually going to fill up? I hadn't spent much time in that area for a while but I moved near Graham recently and I've been walking around a lot. It seems insane.
