I like a tureen. Ebay has tons of them quite cheap because people don't use them much. They remind me of my French friend's grandmother who made soup every day of her life until she had a stroke, and served it in a beautiful tureen. My friend hated it because she had to eat it every day of her life but I loved it. I couldn't believe this stuff that looked like dishwater with tiny pasta stars in it could taste like heaven.

I aspire to that kind of living Madchen.

Ooh I quite fancy a tureen with matching ladle. But then I worry about having too many ultra-specialised utensils e.g. I have a citrus zester and a lemon reamer.

lemon reamer? that sounds... dirty

dahlin (dahlin), Thursday, 30 June 2005 09:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Liz - what's the difference?

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 30 June 2005 09:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Well, the zester zests and the reamer reams :)

as opposed to

which is indeed very very dirty.

I've been looking at tureens and have bid on a lovely silver-plated ladle! I now fear ebay addiction.

how often do you find the need to ream a lemon?

dahlin (dahlin), Thursday, 30 June 2005 09:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, you know, when the urge arises.

Liz :x (Liz :x), Thursday, 30 June 2005 09:52 (twenty-one years ago)

do you have a salad spinner too?

dahlin (dahlin), Thursday, 30 June 2005 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

There's no keeping that Citrus Love down.

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 30 June 2005 09:53 (twenty-one years ago)

I've never seen the appeal of the reamer - isn't it just a squeezer with a handle and nothing to catch the seeds?

(x-post I have a salad spinner)

Mädchen (Madchen), Thursday, 30 June 2005 09:54 (twenty-one years ago)

SALAD?! Don't mention that filth.

The reamer is indeed a squeezer without a tray. I like it because it's made of nice wood and makes me feel efficient and butch (as much as one can be while fondling a citrus fruit) catching the seeds in my hand.

i love salad spinners. my mother still has her bright orange tupperware one from the 70s.

tho now i have a good idea what to bring madchen as a housewarming pressie if i ever ge around to visiting her house

dahlin (dahlin), Thursday, 30 June 2005 10:18 (twenty-one years ago)

My salad spinner has BRAKES in it! you whizz it up, spin spin spin... and theres a button you can press to make it STOP suddenly.

Why in fucks name one needs an emergency stop on a salad spinner, I dont know. OH MY GOD THE SPINACH IS THROWING UP! STOP THE RIDE!

The unique shape of the Marmite jar is modelled on a tureen. Though soup is obviously easier to get out of one than viscous brown yeast-based gloop.
