Yeah, it's by René Magritte, and apparently it's called "Le fils de l'homme" ("The Sons of Man"?).

Surrealism is the godparent to every piece of trashy cover art for sci-fi and fantasy potboilers.

Magritte's train from the fireplace one ( La Durée poignardée) is pretty cool. My favorite surrealist painting is Ernst's L'ange du Foyer:
http://www.abcgallery.com/E/ernst/ernst24.html

That's not a great image of the painting- I have a nice copy of it in a coffee table book on surrealism that I got for $4 from a barnes & noble clearance table. In that reproduction, the movement in the painting that he generated out of the folds of the crazy bird thingie's skin is very well done. The copy in the link above is missing a lot of that detail.

this advertising spot on this site is for sale!

obvious advantages:

1. no banner can be blocked
2. only dedicated visitors click through the link
3. a momentary advert is greater than 100s of sites with different subjects and directions
4. very low prices

check out this site

surrealism without horror is useless
surrealism without grace is useless

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 23 July 2005 18:14 (twenty years ago)

The key was last night I met someone dressed just like that, with the hat and all (costume party), and his head was shaped like an apple-- he was angry when I made the comparison, but I couldn't name a name. And that bugged me. Now I have the name and I may even print off the picture to shove in his apple face.
