C/D: Waking up early for the hell of it on a work day

Not sure if I could make a habit out of it, but today I woke up around 5 and had a comfy 3 hours til work, two of those while the GF was still sleeping. I had coffee, surfed around on the computer, listened to some music I'd been meaning to get to, and got to listen to Howard Stern when he comes on (6 AM). A good time. I'm paying for it a little now, I feel a little confused about the afternoon, but I'm sure I'll sleep well tonight...

I wish I could do this. If I do get up early, it's only to go to work early and run errands before work. Else, more sleep.

Dr. Glen Y. Abreu (dr g), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

classic!

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:44 (twenty years ago)

nice in the Summer months, when it's light out...

Boring Satanic Space Jazz (sexyDancer), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:46 (twenty years ago)

Jeez, I have to do this just about every day.

Carol Stream (dymaxia), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

If I get up early, I go to the gym.

Adam In Real Life (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

It seems like when I do actually get up and get going early that those days are the hardest to get through and the worst shit ends up happening.

dan m (OutDatWay), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

I was just thinking about this today... I probably won't get up obscenely early 'til I'm 80. But it's cool to walk around the streets super early, stop for a pastry or whatnot.. Everytime I do it (usually from insomnia) I always swear I'm going to do it more.

andy --, Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:56 (twenty years ago)

utterly classic, but i'm very bad at it. i force myself to get up early some days to go to the gym, but although i absolutely love pottering about for a couple of hours before work, my half-awake morning-self loves turning over and giving it big Zs even more.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 18:58 (twenty years ago)

I wake up early
go for hour long morning walks
me and my iPod

only exercise
that I really get these days
only chance to think

plus for $2.50
walk to Starbuck's then walk back
with my ICED COFFEE

Haikunym (Haikunym), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:00 (twenty years ago)

I enjoyed doing this more during the winter months. Making some hot tea and oatmeal, it's still nice and dark out.

In the summer, I just lie like a dog with my tongue hanging out. Early morning is the coolest it gets in my house, so I stay in bed.

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:07 (twenty years ago)

Haikunym - sounds great, mebbe I'll try for a walk tomorrow (if I don't sleep through my resolution).

57 7th (calstars), Wednesday, 27 July 2005 19:16 (twenty years ago)

So classic.

This morning I woke up at 5 and watched a movie before work.

Mil (Mil), Thursday, 28 July 2005 01:00 (twenty years ago)

"my half-awake morning-self loves" = "my half-awake morning self-love" ?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 28 July 2005 01:04 (twenty years ago)

I work on flexitime, so waking up early = going to work early and building up time that can later be squandered on knocking off early or taking long lunches. So that's pretty classic. If I already have loads of time in the bank, then sometimes I actually have breakfast at home, which is also unusually classic.

As of next week I have to go to gym three times a week for injury rehab type thing, so will be becoming both forced and dud.

kit brash (kit brash), Thursday, 28 July 2005 02:58 (twenty years ago)

dud if it's because you can't sleep but haven't slept enough so that you sit around feeling rough and unable to do anything productive. ugh.

toby (tsg20), Thursday, 28 July 2005 03:52 (twenty years ago)

classic! i love mornings. best in summer because i can go to the beach for a run and a swim before work

gem (trisk), Thursday, 28 July 2005 07:20 (twenty years ago)

i miss working at night. even if i woke up at noon i'd still have six hours before i had to be at work.

club soda (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 28 July 2005 07:21 (twenty years ago)

I thought this would be a good idea recently after reading Nicholson Baker's A Box Of Matches. Then I remembered that a) I don't have a fireplace b) I don't have a coffee maker c) I don't have a duck to feed and d) I hate mornings.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 28 July 2005 07:30 (twenty years ago)

I've been waking up half an hour early for the past few weeks, in order to get a decent breakfast and half a pot of coffee in me before I have to speak to anyone. But then again, I've been doing it so regularly it doesn't feel like early any more really.

Except when people start calling me a fun-hater because I start whinging about wanting to go home and then falling asleep on benches in pubs by about 10pm.

Masonic Boom (kate), Thursday, 28 July 2005 07:34 (twenty years ago)

The cat has been waking me up by walking on me at 5 am.

Jarlr'mai (jarlrmai), Thursday, 28 July 2005 07:36 (twenty years ago)

I'm normally up at 6:30 to get to work by 8 and this includes a leisurely coffee somehwere. Sometimes I'll wake by 5 and that can be pleasant if I'm well slept.

Ed (dali), Thursday, 28 July 2005 07:44 (twenty years ago)

I wish i could be the sort of person that wakes up early & then gets up & is all constructive, but no. If I wake up earlier than I should it's because I have to be at work early or I have been woken up by something. If the latter is the case, then I just roll back over & try again.

PinXorchiXoR (Pinkpanther), Thursday, 28 July 2005 07:44 (twenty years ago)

I would love to do this, have a small coffee in a deserted café reading the paper, before going to work. OTOH i would love to stay out until midnight and go to bed at 1 AM. Hard to choose, so I end up doing neither...

Baaderonixx on a long black leash (Fabfunk), Thursday, 28 July 2005 07:46 (twenty years ago)

What I really like is having a pot of coffee and a good breakfast and the local papers in mine own garden, at that time of the morning when it's peaceful and quiet, before my housemates have come down (I find it very hard to be sociable in the morning) and before my lumpenproletariat neighbours wake up. That sets me up for a good day.

I've not been able to do it this past week, on account of the rain.

And my housemates throw away the local papers before I can read them. :-(

Masonic Boom (kate), Thursday, 28 July 2005 07:49 (twenty years ago)

i just realized that it's almost 5 am. that qualifies as being up early! coffee will be had, oh yes.

club soda (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 28 July 2005 07:51 (twenty years ago)

Hmmmm, coffee...

Baaderonixx on a long black leash (Fabfunk), Thursday, 28 July 2005 07:56 (twenty years ago)

i can go to the beach for a run and a swim before work
I’m jealous!

I’m thinking of moving to Brighton so maybe I could do this myself one day.

As for thread title, classic. I love watching a film before work.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 28 July 2005 08:25 (twenty years ago)

Haha I have lived in Brighton for about 20 of my 27 years and I have never been for a swim before work. Doing *anything* before work is something of a miracle. Shame on me.

Archel (Archel), Thursday, 28 July 2005 08:29 (twenty years ago)

Rarely if ever do this. I manage to sleep till about 8:30. Quickly get ready and open the shop at about 8:50. The joy of living across the street from work/the shop. I think this will all change once the baby's here. It'll be: sleep when she/he lets us. heh.

nathalie's body's designed for two (stevie nixed), Thursday, 28 July 2005 08:32 (twenty years ago)

i lived in a building with an outdoor pool and i thought it would be very clevah if i could get up early every morning and have a nice energizing swim. i tried it one morning but the pool hadn't been cleaned yet and was full of a night's worth of leaves and dead insects.

club soda (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 28 July 2005 08:37 (twenty years ago)

Try and get up early twice a week to ride my bike through the woods and on to the Downs for a couple of hours. Amazing at dawn, especially when there's lots of low wispy clouds with the sun turning them all sorts of colours and there's not another soul around.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 28 July 2005 08:40 (twenty years ago)

oh yeah wispy clouds at dawn, i love this too! i live on a big wetland, the mist over the lake is a fantastic view from my window on a winter morning.

gem (trisk), Thursday, 28 July 2005 09:04 (twenty years ago)

I've been getting up early and walking to and from work recently, which takes about 50 minutes. I really like it. I feel smug about getting exercise (>6 mile round trip) and I'm awake when I get to work.

beanz (beanz), Thursday, 28 July 2005 09:50 (twenty years ago)

Strange coincidence, I did this today and yesterday quite randomly. It is nice.

richardk (Richard K), Thursday, 28 July 2005 11:24 (twenty years ago)

four years pass...

I woke up a couple hours before my alarm and was just enjoying being in bed with the girl & the storm outside. Then I accidentally woke her up. On Monday. Her 15-hours-of-school day.

Feel sooooooooooo bad.

:/

Nanobots: HOOSTEEND (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Monday, 26 October 2009 12:50 (sixteen years ago)

Don't worry about it, treat her with a nice selfmade breakfast or dinner and all's forgiven. :-)

Nathalie (stevienixed), Monday, 26 October 2009 14:05 (sixteen years ago)

a breakfast that could make itself would really be the best thing ever.

I never saw the advantage of peeing while standing. (Upt0eleven), Monday, 26 October 2009 14:14 (sixteen years ago)

haha Oh crap, I R DUMB. :-(

Nathalie (stevienixed), Monday, 26 October 2009 14:17 (sixteen years ago)

nooooooooooo, I knew exactly what you meant but the image that sentence conjured was just the awesomest.

I never saw the advantage of peeing while standing. (Upt0eleven), Monday, 26 October 2009 14:26 (sixteen years ago)

i was gonna bring her coffee after i get out and then make her pad thai to close the night if she can stay awake long enough for me to make it
