Was there a time, generations ago, when security guards were badass and caused fear and trepidation?

I passed a uniformed security in the train station yesterday: about 70 years old, with old man's slicked-back hair, bifocals, and A CANE! I wouldn't trust this guy with guarding my fishtank. He should have been playing dominoes in the park.

I know the 'new economy' has fucked over alot of people, and old timers work in Taco Bell, etc... but if you're asking somebody to look after the welfare of your property, shouldn't they be at least slightly intimidating? I see so many commuting security guards with untucked shirts, dopey shoes, out-of-shape... were they always like this?

Yes, they were all Hemingway fans and joined the Marines after 9/11.

Security guards have always had a streak of Hans Moleman.
