I find it difficult to get beyond "Cute guy in aisle three!"

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 28 July 2005 11:01 (twenty years ago)

"My Folks", a passion project for Paul Reiser, will rollout in September. Co-starring Peter Falk and Olympia Dukakis, "My Folks" is a comedy about grown children and their parents.

I take it that this cinematic feast will not bear comparison with the works of Cassavetes.

I think about the little people. Not often. I spend most of my time with the people who work with me -- the woman who brushes my teeth, the man who puts on my shoes, my bedwarmers -- I have four or five women who sleep in my bed from 7 until 9 and then at 9:05 I ask them to leave and I go right in bed and it's snuggly.

I don't not work because I'm rich. I don't work because I live In Czechoslovakia. It's just such a tough commute. It's the commute that kills you. To get here for a 6 a.m. call from Czechoslovakia, I have get up at around 3. I have to go to sleep at around 6. It's the traffic over the Bermuda Triangle that's really bad. Other than that it's pretty smooth. I take side streets.

Guttenberg on the reasons we haven't seen much of him lately:

Saw in the newest Entertainment Weekly that one of his kids turned him onto Muse, and Absolution is now one his favorite albums. I don't know what that has to do with anything, but I thought it was weird.

Now, Paul Reiser has something to really be mad about.

NBC cancelled "The Paul Reiser Show" on Friday after just two episodes, TheWrap has confirmed.

The "Mad About You" star's critically panned return to television debuted to the lowest ratings in network history; 3.3 million viewers and a 1.1 rating in the key 18-49 demographic.

The bleeding showed no signs of stopping as Reiser suffered an 18 percent drop in its second week.

buzza, Saturday, 23 April 2011 22:25 (fifteen years ago)

wow. that was quick. it wasn't very good. a pale copy of Curb. would have thought the other nbc shows would have carried it for a while. it worked for veronica's closet anyway.

scott seward, Saturday, 23 April 2011 23:31 (fifteen years ago)

plus i think reiser has just been out of the game too long or something. he was sooooooooooo broad and spastic and schticky. and he looked terrible.

Saw a commercial for The Tonight Show on tv tonight saying Reiser was a scheduled guest one night this week. WHAT EVER SHALL THEY DISCUSS NOW?

Johnny Fever, Monday, 25 April 2011 03:03 (fifteen years ago)

In another great "Tonight Show" decision, NBC booked Paul Reiser to appear with Jay Leno to promote his new show -- and kept the stage open for him to dig his claws into the network after they cancelled his sitcom last week.

Reiser, whose "Paul Reiser Show" was canned by NBC after just two episodes, got some tough jabs in against the network in his appearance with Leno on Monday night, alluding to their flailing, incoherent strategy and miserable ratings.

"NBC, to my knowledge, they don't traditionally make bad decisions. Have you heard that? I don't know what your experience is," Reiser deadpanned to Leno, the center of the great Late Night War a year ago. Reiser defended Leno in a column for The Huffington Post as the conflict with Conan O'Brien and NBC raged.

"It turns out they said we enjoy missing you more than actually having you," he joked. "But listen, I don't take it personally. Listen, when you're the last place network, you don't want to jeopardize that. You've found your niche. Stay there. So I get it."

surely keeping his weaksauce show with his terribly-acting IRL kid and its record low ratings would have ensured, rather than jeopardising, the last place?

The show stars Reiser as... Paul Reiser. It's been a few years since Paul's hit TV series went off the air. Since then, he's been enjoying the quiet life at home with his lovely wife, Claire (Amy Landecker, "A Serious Man") and kids, and generally minding his own business. Lately, however, Paul has been thinking that it's time he did something new, something meaningful. But what that next thing might be, he has no idea.

In his quest to figure it out, Paul is both helped and hindered by his new "friends." Like most men his age, Paul didn't choose them. They're the husbands of his wife's friends, the dads of his kids' schoolmates. Thrown together by circumstance, Paul and his cohorts, including Jonathan (Ben Shenkman, "Angels in America"), Habib (Omid Djalili, "The Infidel"), Fernando (Duane Martin, "All of Us") and Brad (Andrew Daly, "MADtv") form an unlikely comradeship - and a horrible basketball team.

Reiser says one night "I was performing at a charity event and I had such a great time, and such a great audience I asked myself why I wasn't doing this more." So he started from scratch, calling up comedy clubs in LA, and fine tuning his act.

So what's it like to be back on stage twenty years later? "It's great, but it doesn't change, it's as hard and as great and as challenging as it was when I started as a 22 year old" says Reiser. And his favorite part? Interacting with the audience.

"When you make a movie, it can be months or years sometimes before you get reaction, but (with stand up) it's right there. The audience is laughing, you change course accordingly and it's like a high wire act. It's exciting, fun and rewarding."
