I have to think of somewhere good to eat tonight that is kind of adventure food, not like Earwax or something.

lichter, Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

what neighborhood? price range?

adventure food sounds fun.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:40 (twenty years ago)

Sounds like eating a rattlesnake while swinging from a rope.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:43 (twenty years ago)

Sometimes you can get rattlesnake hot dogs from Hot Dougs.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:45 (twenty years ago)

I guess cheap ish like 7.95-15.95. Bucktown/Wicker Park/ Lincoln Park. And if there was swinging from a rope that would be awesome.

lichter, Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:50 (twenty years ago)

Oh, although my favorite food in the history of time is sadly, Swank Frank, it should not overtly involve cased meats.

lichter, Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:52 (twenty years ago)

I used to love Swank Frank but it takes them 30 minutes to make a hot dog. Chopper's on Ashland does practically the same thing in what seems like 37 seconds.

Sparkle Motion's Rising Force, Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

Finding Lawrence's Fisheries at 3 a.m. is always kind of an adventure for me.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:54 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking of food I have never tried before as adventure food. I have tried: Thai, Sushi, Chinese, Indian, Italian, Amercian fare, Costa Rican, Mexican, and Ethiopian food. It would be fine if it was one of the above and mind-blowingly outstandingly special or good in some way.

lichter, Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

i think the better adventure eating places are outside that area.

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

i heard that there was a korean bbq restaurant on "check please" recently in that are and it sounds like serious adventure food. tons of little plates and meat being cooked on a rock in front of you. i can't remember the name of course, but it's four words, three letters each. like san goo wan san or something. goo was almost definitely one of the words.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:55 (twenty years ago)

"in that are" means "in that area" in the language i speak.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

like all the korean joints on lawrence.

amanda: we're on a roll today. i was going to post (above) & got blocked by your post!

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:56 (twenty years ago)

If La Cumbamba were still open, that would make good adventure food. It was a Colombian place that never had a fixed menu, so you'd go in and just get served whatever they had that day, and the chef/owner would just make up a price at the end of your meal.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

That sounds awesome.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

(Handlebar is now in that space.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

i agree that adventure food lies outside of that general area.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 28 July 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

Karyn's, the raw food place on Halsted, is kind of adventurous. Unfortunately, it's also not very good. (At least it wasn't the one time I went.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:00 (twenty years ago)

i agree Kelsey, but since we are riding bikes, we're trying to keep it close. I have actually been to that place Milkmaid! It is awesome! Jordon you probably know this, but Lawrence Fisheries sells frog legs. They look sort of like chicken and if you leave a plastic bag of them in someone's coat pocket and they find them later that night it is funny. But not if you are sober. And it is the next day. And you forgot about them.

lichter, Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:01 (twenty years ago)

Okay how about this: What was the last totally awesome resturant you have been to anywhere in Chicago?

lichter, Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:03 (twenty years ago)

I was thinking of food I have never tried before as adventure food. I have tried: Thai, Sushi, Chinese, Indian, Italian, Amercian fare, Costa Rican, Mexican, and Ethiopian food. It would be fine if it was one of the above and mind-blowingly outstandingly special or good in some way.

Okay, then. Have you had Afghani food? There's Kabul House at North and Halsted. It's pretty decent, very much a blend of Indian and Middle Eastern styles.

Hema's Kitchen (Indian) on Clark and Fullerton is Indian, but it's the best Indian food in the city, according to me. (The original location is at Devon and Leavitt.)

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:04 (twenty years ago)

the korean BBQ= San Soo Gab San. It's like 5 or 6000 north western. also, notably, open 24 hrs. I recommend going no earlier than 3AM for the full experience, and also the baby octopus

b'angelo, Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:05 (twenty years ago)

jaymc, that is nuts. That was my entire plan for dinner tonight, but Kabul House closed its North/Halsted location and now only has a place in SKOKIE! But, yeah that is what I originally planned on.

lichter, Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

oh crazy! i didn't know it was closed. the skokie location is actually the only one i've been to.

i was going to link to the "who are all these mystery posters" thread on the noize board, but then realized that it contains a video embed and the background is smokey the bear wallpaper, and everyone would be all wtf.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:08 (twenty years ago)

lichter, this thread might be useful, if potentially outdated: Chicago Restaurants

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

They look sort of like chicken and if you leave a plastic bag of them in someone's coat pocket and they find them later that night it is funny.

Haha. They're pretty good, too!

I can guarantee that I will be waking up in a hotel room dotted with Lawrence's fried shrimp on Saturday morning.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

how far north are you willing to go?

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:09 (twenty years ago)

Mystery posting is one of my favorite things about ilxor. I would otherwise be too shy to bug people.

lichter, Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:11 (twenty years ago)

you also must already know that the chicago cabal spends 60% of each day talking about food.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:12 (twenty years ago)

Mystery posting is one of my favorite things about ilxor. I would otherwise be too shy to bug people.

you're just using us!!

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:14 (twenty years ago)

Seven Wives in Chinatown!
Zam Zam on Devon!
FuRama near Argyle!

deej.., Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:17 (twenty years ago)

Is Hot Chocolate anything special? Someone a long time ago said it was quite good and while it seems kind of boring, it is in the neighborhood and is not Piece or something. Oh, it should be said that my standards have dropped dramatically at this point.

Lichter, Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:18 (twenty years ago)

Do they serve dinner there? I've always been confused about that place.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:19 (twenty years ago)

No, It is not true jaymc! Wait. Well. I am using you for good, not evil and also, snacks!

lichter, Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

is this for a date?

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:20 (twenty years ago)

What's the name of that cajun place...Heaven on Seven? Has anyone been there?

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

What about Rodan? It can be a little TRENDY but they have some interesting, I daresay "adventurous" menu items.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:21 (twenty years ago)

Bhabi's Kitchen on N. Oakley is the best Indian Food in Chicago. We were up on Devon the other night, and Bhabi's was closed, so we went to the big on on the corner of devon and ashland, jewel of india. I didn't care too much for the chinease/indian fusion.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

Jordan, I still have happy memories of a veggie po'boy at Heaven on Seven five years ago, but haven't been back. There's like three or four locations in the city.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:22 (twenty years ago)

Also, my new favorite place on argyle is Pho 888. Not for pho though, I still go to Tank for that. For the awesome lemon grass tofu.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:23 (twenty years ago)

My girlfriend has fond childhood memories of Heaven on Seven.

Ooh, I see that there's one on Wabash, one of the three or so streets that I can get to in Chicago! I might have to get a po' boy there this weekend.

Jordan (Jordan), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

Thanks Deej. Zam Zam sounds exciting. Of course I can't ride my bike there tonight, but I will soon check it out.
Milkmaid, not a date, but a hang with someone I want to make have a fun night with curious new things about.
Jordan, Heaven on 7 is pretty good. They have a weird sweet potato squish thing that is delicious while being boring.
jaymc, Rodan might bar me out too much.

Lichter, Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:25 (twenty years ago)

What about Cafe BABAREEBA? Would that place be packed with total douchbags tonight?

Lichter, Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

Milkmaid, not a date, but a hang with someone I want to make have a fun night with curious new things about.

SOUNDS LIKE A DATE.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

ok. i had some suspicions that i will not share at this time. at this time i will not share my suspicions.
connections that may or may not have been missed may or may not have something to do with the suspicions i may or may not have. thankyouandgoodnight.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:28 (twenty years ago)

is this about me?

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

no. no way. not at all.

(hehehe)

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Cafe Bolero at Western/Belden. This is a place where the best atmosphere (crazy Cuban jazz) is in the smoking section in back. They have a nice patio too. Plus, on the right night you'll see the gliterati of the Cuban set from around town.

dan m (OutDatWay), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

i think big, jaymc. big picture. you never know.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:30 (twenty years ago)

you're scaring me.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:31 (twenty years ago)

sorry. i'm kidding!

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:32 (twenty years ago)

ok? kidding.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

oh wait, i see.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:33 (twenty years ago)

phew.

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

back to our regular programming: Pho 88

The Milkmaid (of Human Kindness) (The Milkmaid), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

Okay, I will say this:
That was all very mysterious and exciting!
I cannot conscionably contribute to date theorizing that might have to do with you very nice fellows and ladies. So for the record I am lady, who is in total hot pantish love with her boyfriend; tonight I am taking a friend out who is far too familiar with Chicago and as I am not all that up on it, I wanted to it to have aspects of the adventure for both of us because it makes stuff fun, and I hate paying for food at bad restaurants. I enlisted you experienced dudes of ILE because your food discussions of Chicago are often rad.

By the by: I hope connections and such work out; I think I might try the cuban place, AWESOME. Thank you!

Lichter, Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:43 (twenty years ago)

Indie (Thai, in Edgewater on broadway)
Amitabul (Korean vegan, 6207 N Milwaukee Ave, in bumblefug)
To Pho (vietnamese, downtown on wabash)

teh Nü and Impröved john n chicago (frankE), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:53 (twenty years ago)

i'll second indie cafe!

kelsey (kelstarry), Thursday, 28 July 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

To Pho sucks sooooooooooooooo bad. Really, no one should ever eat there. Their pho is a joke. I haven't had other food there, but their pho is not pho.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 29 July 2005 00:25 (twenty years ago)

My new favorite sushi joint. Tanoshii, don't order anything in particular, just ask for the specials.

Jeff-PTTL (Jeff), Friday, 29 July 2005 02:39 (twenty years ago)

hmmm

carbon (carbon), Friday, 29 July 2005 21:05 (twenty years ago)

Dinner went well; in fact it was a great night, save the lack of advance dinner plans. Adventures abounded, even beyond dinner. There is a new italian place in Lincoln Park with an extremely ernest young waiter who may have unto himself made the meal delicious through sheer force of will. By the time I ate I was drunk, so my description of the subtle effects it had on my palate are as follows: 'ow, this is too hot to eat right now; I should wait." "This seems good! I like chickens AND tomatoes!" But the advice I recieved was beyond helpful, so yeah, thanks.

Lichter (Elisa), Sunday, 31 July 2005 04:23 (twenty years ago)
