Seattle, now your thoughts have betrayed her too!

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 29 July 2005 21:27 (twenty years ago)

Wait, I think you spelled "sister" and "cities" wrong!

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Friday, 29 July 2005 21:32 (twenty years ago)

i always wanted a sister. how come seattle gets one?

club soda (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 29 July 2005 21:34 (twenty years ago)

Uiwang City, South Korea, is the sister city to the city that I live in.

I have no idea what the fuck that's supposed to mean. A longer line for the bathroom?

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Friday, 29 July 2005 21:44 (twenty years ago)

The sister city agreement between Seattle and Reykjavik was signed in 1986, the year of Reykjavik's bicentennial anniversary.

Wait, we ain't NATURAL sistaz????!!! :'(

Seattle has the largest Icelandic community in the United States, and cultural and educational exchanges had taken place for many years.

(ugh.. that explains all the sigur ros and múm fans and..)

uh.. HI! :D

(i kid, i kid, i love Mugison, Dr. Gunni, and K.U.K.L. and all those early punk bands like Vonbrigði and Þeyr)

So what happens if someone from one of those cities has sex with someone from another - it's incest, innit?

Hydrochloric Shaved Weirds (Bimble...), Friday, 29 July 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

Legally yes... Naturally no..(apparently!)

donut ferry (donut), Friday, 29 July 2005 22:03 (twenty years ago)

I bet Seattle is getting mighty pissed not getting its make-up back from the other sistaz that borrowed it all.

New York has nine sister cities, as designated by Sister Cities International (SCI): Beijing, Cairo, Jerusalem, Johannesburg, London, Madrid, Rome, Santo Domingo, and Tokyo.

club soda (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 29 July 2005 22:26 (twenty years ago)

i appreciate that whoever compiled that list went to the trouble to alphabetize it.

club soda (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 29 July 2005 22:28 (twenty years ago)

I wonder if LA will get into this Sister Act Too?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 29 July 2005 22:29 (twenty years ago)

it'd be nice to see them get "back in the habit."

club soda (Jody Beth Rosen), Friday, 29 July 2005 22:31 (twenty years ago)

This might be a better general thread idea..

Sister City International

(Sounds like the best or worst band or record label name never used.. depending on what type of music it is!)

donut ferry (donut), Friday, 29 July 2005 22:35 (twenty years ago)

xpost - there's really no where to go from there huh?

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Friday, 29 July 2005 22:42 (twenty years ago)

L.A. and Sydney probably make the best international sister cities.

donut ferry (donut), Friday, 29 July 2005 22:44 (twenty years ago)

further proving that australia and southern california are the same place.

Seattle has a nice flat topped rock down off the sidewalk on the east side of Alaska which has a brass marker showing some shared longitude or latitude with our Irish sister city. Can't remember the city name, right now. It's a nice spot to sit & wait for slowpoke friends to catch up when you're jogging along the waterfront, so many thanks to our Irish sister city for giving us a nice spot to rest. ;)

Melbourne has a few - the most appropriate one I reckon is Milan (as Melbourne has a very high Italian population and here too we pride ourselves on fashion and culture). I always thought Montreal'd be a great sister city to Melbourne, but it isnt! These are apparently ours (I knew about Osaka but not the rest):

Osaka, Japan - 1978
Tianjin, People's Republic of China - 1980
Thessaloniki, Greece - 1984
Boston, United States - 1985
Saint Petersburg, Russia - 1989
Milan, Italy - 2004
Galle, Sri Lanka - 2005 (after the 2004 tsunami disaster Melbourne adopted Galle in order to fund the reconstruction of its cricket ground)
