I know nothing about her, but she sounds pretty swell.

The original one-name entertainer, it says.

She was still alive!?

I have a few songs by her, and she's pretty good. But she had hits in the thirties; I never would have guessed she stuck around this long.

an earlier one-name entertainer (fictional dept admittedly but i still don't buuy the "hildegard" claim))

(haha this link also contains a similarly dubious "first": du maurier's book was apparently the first “best seller” --- ?!)

(the book may however be the first AND ONLY novel where names of the two main characters become currency apart from the story, where the connection between them is NOT currency)

I read the title of this thread and thought it referred to Hildegard of Bingen, the bit about her being a one name entertainer does somewhat apply...

My favourite diva, however, is Clara Rockmore

The original one-name entertainer, it says.

Harry Houdini pretty much went by "Houdini" alone.

But only Hildegarde influenced Liberace.

Kate Winslet should play her in an biopic. They've got practically the same face!
