Hmmm.

Directed by Mary Harron, though. So maybe. But still.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Sunday, 31 July 2005 17:30 (twenty years ago)

Gretchen has RADICAL BOOBS. I hope she's on the chubby side for this flick, she's so hot and shiny when she's chubby. I don't remember how she acts.

LeCoq (LeCoq), Sunday, 31 July 2005 19:37 (twenty years ago)

I'm not sure she does either. otoh, Gretchen Mol bondage shots could be hot.

there was another bettie page biopic made last year. paige richards = bp doppelganger, but from the trailer it looks like irving klaw himself directed it

"Ms. Page was born to take her clothes off, and Ms. Mol pays tribute to the pinup's natural talent with intelligence and a lack of self-consciousness that speaks well of both her and her director."

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Thursday, 15 September 2005 05:54 (twenty years ago)

Oh dear, Jared Harris is in it.

The Brocade Fire (kate), Thursday, 15 September 2005 06:56 (twenty years ago)

seven months pass...
saw it tonight, completely loved it. Mol is absolutely convincing.

Matos-Webster Dictionary (M Matos), Sunday, 16 April 2006 05:55 (twenty years ago)

Mol's great. The film is barely there.

Grey, Ian (IanBrooklyn), Sunday, 16 April 2006 06:15 (twenty years ago)

i saw the trailer the other week and it looks utterly fantastic.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Sunday, 16 April 2006 06:31 (twenty years ago)

The flash advertisement that runs for this on some websites is brilliant, because it defaults to mute and you actually have to click a button to hear it.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 17 April 2006 14:58 (twenty years ago)

will gretchen mol make me forget they were going to cast liv tyler

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 17 April 2006 15:04 (twenty years ago)

Mol's great. The film is barely there.

OTM. She is really great, and should silence people who were screaming for Rose McGowan or someone with a more obvious look.

Tiki Theater Xymposium (Bent Over at the Arclight), Monday, 17 April 2006 15:10 (twenty years ago)

From the trailer I couldn't gather what the point/plot was - where's the drama, or is it about Page's fall from prominence (which was her choice, I thought?).

Page seems like someone you could get hopped up on doing a biopic, only to find out there's no interesting story to tell.

Big Willy and the Twins (miloaukerman), Monday, 17 April 2006 15:52 (twenty years ago)

trailers shouldn't reveal the movie's entire plot or point. that's what movies are for.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 17 April 2006 15:53 (twenty years ago)

They should give me some idea of what the story is going to be about. "Here's five years from Bettie Page's life when she posed for pinups" isn't quite enough to get me to run for the theater.

Big Willy and the Twins (miloaukerman), Monday, 17 April 2006 16:02 (twenty years ago)

it's going to be about bettie page.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 17 April 2006 16:05 (twenty years ago)

did they manage to find some sorta drug addiction they could play up and turn into the central dramatic arc of her life?

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 17 April 2006 16:11 (twenty years ago)

dead brothers (cf ray, walk the line) are the big ones these days

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 17 April 2006 16:13 (twenty years ago)

Didn't Page spend ten years in a lunatic asylum in the 1980s? Surely that's a half decent TRAGEDY to befall anyone?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Monday, 17 April 2006 16:14 (twenty years ago)

she didn't look like gretchen mol in the '80s though.

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 17 April 2006 16:15 (twenty years ago)

this kinda looks like it should be a made-for-tv movie.

i've dreamt of rubies! (Mandee), Monday, 17 April 2006 16:23 (twenty years ago)

yeah i like mary harron alot but this does feel pretty hbo biopic. i'm totally seeing it though, mol's got radical boobs.

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 17 April 2006 16:27 (twenty years ago)

I thought this movie told the story of the photographer, not really bettie.

Miss Misery xox (MissMiseryTX), Monday, 17 April 2006 17:22 (twenty years ago)

Mandee OTM - that's why I want the trailer to clue me in. Give me a sign this isn't something I should just watch on HBO in six months, Mr. Trailer Editor.

Big Willy and the Twins (miloaukerman), Monday, 17 April 2006 17:26 (twenty years ago)

do you want them to show you bettie page fighting darth vader or something?

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 17 April 2006 19:35 (twenty years ago)

bettie would take him in 3 rounds

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 17 April 2006 19:36 (twenty years ago)

i remember that suicidegirls set!

j blount (papa la bas), Monday, 17 April 2006 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Bettie Page robs banks, Bettie Page enacts bloody revenge on the '50s moralists who damn her, Bettie Page flies to the moon, I don't care.

Big Willy and the Twins (miloaukerman), Monday, 17 April 2006 20:21 (twenty years ago)

it probably is just yr standard biopic (flashback! montage! uncanny lead performance!) but I'll probably see it just cuz American Psycho was sooooo good. Plus yeah radical boobs. And I really liked Gretchen Mol in Sweet and Lowdown.

Still, Mary Harron's CV is starting to look tailor-made for some rather obvious (and sorta silly) college lesbian feminist studies thesis.

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 17 April 2006 20:44 (twenty years ago)

You got it Shakey; and in my house, radical boobs = must to avoid.

Washable School Paste (sexyDancer), Monday, 17 April 2006 20:52 (twenty years ago)

There's barely any arc to speak of. No references to insane asylum stays, and Page was clean livin' her whole life. There's some uncomfortably glossed over scenes of sexual abuse. Some critics seem to be convinced that the fact that it's all surface is the point. Many of the actors are almost preposterously over-the-top (Lily Taylor, the guy who plays Irving Klaw, Jared Harris). There are weak stabs at drawing parallels between Bettie's story and modern issues of censorship and female sexuality/empowerment. But Mol is really good, the black and white photography is amazing, it's very fun (if disappointingly slight), and yes, (ugh) radical boobs. Closest reference point (though "Notorious" is definitely better) might be the HBO biopic "Norma Jean & Marilyn," with Ashley Judd and Mira Sorvino.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 17 April 2006 23:54 (twenty years ago)

heh i remember when it came out some indignant reviewer was like "this movie is a disgrace, how would we like it if someone made a movie called 'i shot john lennon'?" ... and now leto and lohan are making that one. :-(

I just noticed that she directed last night's episode of HBO's Big Love

anthony easton (anthony), Tuesday, 18 April 2006 08:52 (twenty years ago)

four weeks pass...
Jared Harris' dress sense in this is fantastic, I think I have my summer wardrobe sorted out entirely now.

The colour/black and white symbolism was massively cack-handed, as was the "Being on your knees can either mean fellatio or praying" stuff, Page never really seemed in any danger at any part of the film (she was gang raped and then... what? That played no further part in her consciense?), so there was really no drama whatsoever to the movie (schlubby porn baron has to close down business but retires rich, boo hoo). Mol's performance is campy great, though, I just feel that _this_ Page story is just tailor made for the Suicide Girl/new burlesque generation who like to pretend that there is GOOD PORN WITH INTELLIGENT PEOPLE and BAD PORN WITH STOOPIDS.

7/10, maybe.

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Wednesday, 17 May 2006 13:59 (twenty years ago)

No, she died December last year...

Mark G, Monday, 9 November 2009 11:13 (sixteen years ago)

The wikipedia page is excellent.

OK, I'm done.

Mark G, Monday, 9 November 2009 11:19 (sixteen years ago)

Apparently it's making the rounds of IFC this week - finally got around to seeing this. Campy fun indeed, but I'm not certain that the This Is Serious version would have played any better.
