I grew up with Peter Jennings. We had dinner together nearly every night from the time he first got the anchor job until I left home to go to school. I'm a little surprised by how sad this makes me. Thank you and good night Peter.

We've been talking about it here as well:

Peter Jennings has lung cancer

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 8 August 2005 05:17 (twenty years ago)

peter jennings was like some weird balm for me..his even measured tone of speaking and his often critical eye towards dc policy and the way he apparently chased th ladies w a drink in one hand and a cig in th other.maybe cuz he was canadian and had a non-hysterical way of reporting everything..he comforted me like a cathode blanket and there really isnt any other reporter like that...i will get my news from th net now i suppose..Good night not so funny man wherever yu r

He was certainly the most tolerable of the Big 3 anchors (once Dan Rather lost his mind).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 8 August 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

interesting way to put it...

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 8 August 2005 13:46 (twenty years ago)

RIP.

Jennings was the last survivor of the unlucky early-1980s ABC newsanchor triad, wasn't he? In retrospect, it would seem that that program will be remembered as the "Poltergeist" of its genre.

And didn't Dan Rather lose his mind a bit before he became an anchor?

EmVee, Monday, 8 August 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

A bit, but ENTIRELY with "What's the frequency" then "George Bush is my president, tell me where to line up."

Re that triad, Frank Reynolds was oldish, wasn't he? And while 67 is a bit young I don't think PJ was 'cursed' (cept by right-wing loons who somehow found leftism in his dispassionate Corporate News Reader elocution). Max Robinson I recall dying of AIDS.

OTM. Sorry if that doesn't sound like high praise (I guess it isn't).

o. nate (onate), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:07 (twenty years ago)

Yeah -- my impression is he was an extremely intelligent, decent man who hadn't done any real journalism in 20 years (as per his job).

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

He seemed pretty smart, poised and well-spoken, though I don't know if I would have liked him on a personal level. I never thought of him the same way again after seeing the hauteur and overweening sense of self-importance with which he remonstrated Wes Clark in the Dem primary debates over the whole Michael Moore "deserter" flap, as though a news anchor should naturally speak to a presidential candidate (and former high-ranking general) as a teacher would speak to a misbehaving child.

59, 49, 67. Cancer, AIDS, cancer. (I don't actually believe in curses, btw.)

EmVee, Monday, 8 August 2005 14:34 (twenty years ago)

o. nate, I'd totally forgotten that, thanks. It wasn't as atrocious as that asshole Bernard Shaw's "what if Kitty was raped" question to Dukakis, but bad enough. (and I thought Clark's was a pointless candidacy)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 8 August 2005 14:42 (twenty years ago)

My biggest memory of Jennings came on September 11, 2001. When it's nine-thirty in the morning and Peter Jennings was on the TV set, you knew that it wasn't going to be a good day.

And that's bad because...?

Note words "hauteur" and "overweening sense of self-importance".

I remember the day Columbo told me about 9/11. It was April 34, 1989.

I couldn't photoshop a photo of Falk over Jennings at news desk :(
