WEEDS (the TV show) (suburban pot-dealing mom, etc.)

So I watched the first episode of this tonight. It's OK. Mary Louise Parker is hard not to love. The whole thing is a little more over the top than I was hoping for. It's satire, I know (BLACK COMEDY, AHA!), but they still piled an awful lot on in the first episode. It feels a little self-congratulatory in poking at the soft suburban underbelly, as if that were new or something. Still, Mary Louise Parker. And the Sassy Black Folks she buys her pot from show more promise of being interesting than the Dysfunctional White Folks in her neighborhood.

I give it a B-minus out the gate, but I'll watch a few more to see if it livens up.

Simon Reynolds' wife, Joy Press (?), did an interesting article on it for Village Voice. I haven't seen it yet though, so I can't really give you my view on it. :-)

nathalie sans denouement (stevie nixed), Monday, 8 August 2005 06:19 (twenty years ago)

I read that, it was one reason I watched it. I more or less agree with her, except in the extent of her enthusiasm. She seemed to be applauding it as much for its implied ideological nose-thumbing as its characters and writing and so forth. And the nose-thumbing is fun, but it's going to have to a lot more than that to keep me interested. It's only a half-hour a week, though, and my time isn't so precious I can't ride along for a while and see if it really clicks.

I , too, wish my weed man looked like MLP. I have loved her for a long time now.

Big Loud Mountain Ape (Big Loud Mountain Ape), Monday, 8 August 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

This show was really fucking excellent. The performances were great - I can't believe it's taken Kevin Nealon so long to land a role as a middle-aged suburban stoner dumbass. I can only see this show getting better, like, exponentially with each episode, as long as it makes a bit more of an effort to pace itself (so many big secrets revealed in episode 1, CRAZY).

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 17:21 (twenty years ago)

I think this is a bit like Desperate Housewives in how it is a wicked drama masquerading as black comedy, and will really excel if it can maintain that balance. Luckily, it seems like the cast is up to the task (that last scene especially when Nancy shows up at Hayley's door and she breaks down crying and dude is like "break out that pie you made last night, this white woman is going through it" - CLASSIC), if the writing stays so tight.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

I'm so glad my parents have pay cable channels (such as SHOWTIME!) and Tivo, otherwise I would never, ever get to see this show.

Aside: I can't watch SHOWTIME! now without shouting SHOWTIME! a la Dizzee everytime I see that SHOWTIME! logo.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 17:42 (twenty years ago)

cutty (mcutt), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 17:48 (twenty years ago)

Alessandra Stanley's NYTimes article actually put me off it - Stanley (or her editor?) hangs a lot on the notion that there's something transgressive about teh weed, which at this point seems simply quaint.

"Even on premium cable, setting up a privileged dope-dealing suburban matron as a sympathetic heroine is tricky." Is it? Beyond the legal issues, I find it very hard to attach any kind of moral taint to pot - is the "pothead accountant" any different from an oenophile, really?

Now I suppose I'll have to get Showtime and check it out...

rogermexico (rogermexico), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 17:55 (twenty years ago)

I find it very hard to attach any kind of moral taint to pot - is the "pothead accountant" any different from an oenophile, really?

Yep, especially since she goes heavy on the "no kids" thing to the other dealer. And the upper hand she gets on him at the end of the episode was a little too convenient for me.

nickn (nickn), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 18:20 (twenty years ago)

Oh yeah, that seemed - not exactly contrived - but like it was thrown in far too soon. It would've been a better WTF moment if it wasn't dropped in until much further into the season.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 18:24 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Seven episodes in and this is probably my favorite show on television at the moment though it's not without flaws. My #1 like about it is that the kids aren't just the one-dimensional "sassy" or "smart ass" children you see in sit-coms - they're written like actual kids. I was prepared to completely hate the brother-in-law, but so far he's actually a pretty charming fuck-up.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 26 September 2005 20:34 (twenty years ago)

Also... This show isn't that far off from being a TV version of Over The Edge

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 26 September 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

The kids aren't one dimensional, they encompass at least two dimensions of stereotypes! You have the ones that they're playing against by invoking the second set. There's a kind of creepy undertone to the series where nothing particularly bad really happens as the viewers are repeatedly shown that all of these things we're told are horrible or challenging are shown to be ho-hum simple.

cutty is completely right about the black people dialogue, wtf! I keep hoping it's a parody of the way white suburbanites people think black people speak, but I am getting the suspicion it's not parody. The whole streetwise matron character thing almost saps my will to live.

Um, all that said, it's one of the few things I've been watching on tv since it gives me an excuse to hang out at my friend's place.

mike h. (mike h.), Monday, 26 September 2005 20:52 (twenty years ago)

The whole streetwise matron character thing almost saps my will to live.

I suspect that at some point during the show's development the writers got as far as "hey, let's make the black family the non-dysfunctional one" and then used that as an after-the-fact excuse for their dialogue.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 26 September 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

Hmm, I kinda quit after 4 episodes. The husband's brother was an annoying addition. But maybe I'll try another one or two.

re. the black characters' dialogue. to these english ears it doesn't seem any more caricature-y than, say, the lawyer's or the fuck-up brothers, or the blonde woman, or the vile soccer moms'....

if there one problem with the show, the formulaic 'end the show with MLP crying' thing grated a bit.

EARLY-90S MAN (Enrique), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 07:31 (nineteen years ago)

Having seen a few more episodes, I think the thing I dislike most about this show is that it's Just Trying Too Hard. It still has some extreme high points (whatever Kevin Nealon's character's name is's "debating" skills), I think it needs to just pull back a little with the Insane Drama.

The "black" dialogue has gotten better. I don't really approve though of all of the re-does of "Ticky Tacky" either. And come on Showtime, you are SHOWTIME, show some BOOB.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 16:03 (nineteen years ago)

MLP bumpin the theme music to NPR's "the world" in that low rider impala or whatever and then doing the head dance to it was kind of funny

ath (ath), Tuesday, 19 September 2006 16:17 (nineteen years ago)

there are some things that don't work well on one level (the family problems, Conrad vs. DEA), but at the same time the way that MLP's life is spiralling out of control, no matter how hard she tries, is better than most TV. The comic relief (most especially Kevin Nealon) remains strong, I could do with less of bitchy-mom/fat-daughter.

Parker completely saves the show, she even gives the post-abortion interaction some soul.

Oh yes, it's quite brilliant. Can't wait for the new season.

Stevie D, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 06:09 (eighteen years ago)

This show is appalling. The "me-so-horny" masseuse in the episode where the uncle takes the very young child to get a handjob was unfuckingbelievable. There's not a single ludicrous "black character" stereotype that hasn't been employed, completely straight-faced, yet.

The fact that this shit attracts talented actors like Martin Donovan and Zooey Deschanel is depressing.

Ben Boyerrr, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 11:15 (eighteen years ago)

The first 3 episodes of this season have been such garbage that I've forgotten to watch the last two. Remember when this show used to be quirky, humorous, and interesting? Now it's just boring and lacks anything worthwhile. Has any other show actually changed from a straight-up comedy to a straight-up drama?

Looking back, Weeds declined very swiftly after Agrestic met its fiery fate. I wish I'd stopped watching it then, but something about the show - and it may quite possibly be MLP's wanton displays of legs and boobies all over the place - keeps me a little engrossed.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 2 September 2009 13:07 (sixteen years ago)

so all seasons were added to Netflix streaming so I caught up - think I watched season 1 and a few eps of season 2 years ago. Was glad that Silas became much more tolerable, and even likable, as the show progressed. Did not miss Heylia (sp) or her daughter (?)...note to writers, just because they are black doesn't mean we will automatically write off their obnoxious personalities as "sassy".

Andy and Doug are the best part of the show IMO, I don't find Nancy and her immobile forehead interesting in the slightest. I really hope they drop this Andy/Nancy thing too because that just seems wrong to me on many different levels. And what happened with Nancy and Esteban re: ratting out his crew to the DEA? She just handed him a sonogram and they dropped it?

answer: no, it isn't. got sucked into season 6 mostly b/c i was curious about what was gonna happen to creepy psycho-killer son. otherwise, andy is the only reason i gave a shit about this show at all at this point. i would give a shit about silas if he wasn't such a wishy-washy twit. the show wasted jennifer jason leigh and linda hamilton, and the only semi-plausible reason that i can think of as to why the totally useless-at-this-point kevin neilan is still around is b/c the producers have taken pity on him. even the pruriert interest in seeing naked mary-louise parker get into soft-porn scenarios has lost any flavor.

"Showtime passed on this, as they had already started broadcasting Weeds, a show with similarities to the premise of Breaking Bad. While his producers convinced him that the show was different enough to still be successful, Gilligan later stated that he would not have gone forward with the idea had he known about Weeds earlier."

thought of BB what with the early cancer sub-plot in Weeds as well as Martin Donovan's government agent character getting a little TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT to the illegal activities.
