A new me's coming through yeah...

Been rejigging my online dating profile as i came to the conclusion upon re-reading my existing profile that i wouldn't want to date me based on my original answers. Does this sound unbearably pretentious?

Intro

Eek, here goes with the sales spiel. I'm an Edinburgh native with a
thirst for knowledge and an appetite for the good things in life.
Been
happily single for a bit but fancy meeting a like-minded soul to share
my myriad interests and perhaps develop some new ones. I've got a low
tolerance for trolling bars to meet blokes so I thought I'd give this
a
try instead of moaning that I never meet anyone interesting!

I'm looking to meet an interesting music loving Alpha male, with a
strong sense of self, gsoh, who's intelligent but not elitist, sexy
and
educated.

If this sounds like you do drop me a line. Not that I'm shallow or
anything but pictures would be appreciated.

What I do in my spare time

I've been doing up my flat so my spare time seems to be mostly spent
with a paint brush or
colour chart in hand. When I'm not diying I enjoy cooking * I'm
always
adding new things to me repertoire, live music and lazy Sundays in bed
with the papers.

Favourite things

I have a genre busting passion for music and the resultant bulging
record collection. Favourite artists include David Bowie, Scott
Walker,
Marvin Gaye, and The Blue Nile. I also love Almodovar films and am
enjoying Heimat on bbc4 right now.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:00 (twenty years ago)

I'd hit it! ;-)

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:03 (twenty years ago)

Sorry Leigh! I think that sounds perfect. Cute pic you posted the other day too! :-)

Panther Pink (Pinkpanther), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:04 (twenty years ago)

Alpha male= Egotistical, likes the sound of own voice & whines when doesn’t get own way.

Are you sure you want that?

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

I'm fed up of the simpering mummy's boys i seem to have got so far so i decided to change tack.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

But surely the only men who *use* online dating sites are vile, horrid, unsuccessful ones like me anyway?

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:10 (twenty years ago)

Mwahahaha. My last relationship was with an Alphamale. Literally; that was the name of his band. Can't recommend it but see how you go!

Laurel, Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

I’m sure there’s a happy medium? Going from one extreme to the other seems a bit drastic.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:15 (twenty years ago)

Hey Leigh, I'm enjoying Heimat on BBC4 too!

That Alpha Male thing would put me right off though. (probably just as well ha ha)

Bidfurd, Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:16 (twenty years ago)

A new me's coming through yeah...

Same here, but s/he's more a combination of me and my husband. hahaha

nathalie sans denouement (stevie nixed), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

I would rework the bit that reads:

but not elitist, sexy and educated.

Unless you're actually looking to dump the sexy educated ones.

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:20 (twenty years ago)

Me and my misleading punctuation. Sexy and educated men would be most welcome. Perhaps i'll take the bit out about alpha males too.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

You also use "me" instead of "my" on one occasion - are you going for the chirpy yorkshire lass effect?

You'll also get a whole lotta geeks by asking for music-loving males - they'll read "Alpha male" as meaning that their early Syd Barrett albums are less scratched than anyone else's :)

Markelby (Mark C), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:25 (twenty years ago)

i love music, i ain't a geek!

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

There's a lot to be said for reading back what i write before i put it out into the public domain. Dammit.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

don't waste time filling out dating profiles, just go to a bar and smile at someone you fancy, it’s that easy for girls!

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Oh, don't start that, please, Goodwin.

(I wonder if I should let ILX fill out a dating profile for me, ha ha.) ;-)

Alce Tea-Skirt (kate), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

I thought this was going to be another M4r!ss4 thread.

k/l (Ken L), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

I'd say: Leigh, fix up your music taste.

paulhw (paulhw), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 21:20 (twenty years ago)

I am sorry. So, very very sorry. I stumbled into this thread. It is the wrong place for me to be. You do NOT want to know what I think. Please, someone, anyone, shoot me in the head before I go any further. Better, I should do it myself.

P.S. It's nothing to do with you, personally, Leigh, or anything specific you wrote.

[folds note in quarters and inserts it into mail slot]

BLAM!!!

Aimless (Aimless), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 23:37 (twenty years ago)

About bloody time too you shameless recidivist. I mean really. Tchah.

Leigh, it makes you sound pretty damn lovely.

Matt (Matt), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 23:44 (twenty years ago)

alpha's a poor man's portishead, though, innit?

mookieproof (mookieproof), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 23:47 (twenty years ago)

Certainly not!

(And I'll admit, that's exactly how I interpreted "Alpha male" when I first read the line. Probably the capitalization that did it.)

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 23:55 (twenty years ago)

And I definitely think there is a happy medium between your "simpering mummy's boys" and the alpha males. "Assertive and un-spineless" doesn't necessarily equal "territorial and dominant and asshole-ish".

Deric W. Haircare (Deric W. Haircare), Wednesday, 10 August 2005 23:58 (twenty years ago)

If you're just looking to pass the time alpha males have a certain appeal, but in the long run you'll probably end up either throwing a drink in his face and stalking out or else allowing yourself to be overruled too often.

Laurel, Thursday, 11 August 2005 00:02 (twenty years ago)

I'm not looking to settle down, just to have a bit of fun. Btw what's wrong with my musical taste?

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 11 August 2005 07:25 (twenty years ago)

There’s nothing wrong with your music taste. When I read your profile, I thought ooh I haven’t listened to Bowie for a while so when I got home I put some on when I did my ironing.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 11 August 2005 08:21 (twenty years ago)

I'd lose the first sentence. It's a bit twee. Otherwise looks fine.

Kv_nol (Kv_nol), Thursday, 11 August 2005 08:34 (twenty years ago)

Yes, it was hard to make it past the "Eek."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 11 August 2005 08:37 (twenty years ago)

Also ordinary readers aren't going to understand "trolling."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 11 August 2005 08:38 (twenty years ago)

yeah i reckon i'd lose the 'thought i'd give this a try' bit - i don't reckon there's any need to explain why you're trying it and it seems like such a cliche for those online dating bio things. although i've never done online dating so conceivably i don't have a clue what i'm on about. the rest of it looks all good though. good luck! also i like your 'genre busting passion for music' phrase, what a cool way to describe it

gem (trisk), Thursday, 11 August 2005 08:38 (twenty years ago)

although if your taste is truly "genre busting" you might want to think about casting your net a little wider than bowie/scott/marvin/nile.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 11 August 2005 08:40 (twenty years ago)

she has to put her own taste though, not that of ilm, if she wants to attract a like-minded soul

gem (trisk), Thursday, 11 August 2005 08:42 (twenty years ago)

in which case, maybe lose "genre busting."

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 11 August 2005 08:43 (twenty years ago)

oh marcello. don't be so picky!

gem (trisk), Thursday, 11 August 2005 08:44 (twenty years ago)

why not? potential respondents are going to be picky.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 11 August 2005 08:45 (twenty years ago)

hmmm true yeah i guess you're probably right

gem (trisk), Thursday, 11 August 2005 08:46 (twenty years ago)

"I'm a genre-spanner"

Boosh (chirombo), Thursday, 11 August 2005 08:47 (twenty years ago)

I agree that the examples of my musical taste aren't exactly genre busting, but i didn't want to scare potential respondants off.

Was checking out the competition last night - what a pathetic bunch they are. Perhaps i'm getting it wrong but surely talking about how great your cat is and writing in the style of Bridget Jones isn't exactly the way to attract a fella.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 11 August 2005 08:51 (twenty years ago)

Do you really think you need to cyber date? I thought it was just for the house bound.

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 11 August 2005 08:53 (twenty years ago)

I'm just lazy. Must get another picture, i look awfully chinny in this one. http://thumbnails.match.com/thumbnails/97/91/37489791B.jpeg

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 11 August 2005 08:56 (twenty years ago)

see leigh, this is it - "melody nelson." why don't you put serge gainsbourg in your music list? it's so uncommon a citation it would make respondents do a double take. admittedly, though, it could come across as a bit pervy.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 11 August 2005 10:19 (twenty years ago)

I did have other stuff in there but there wasn't enough space. I think i also mentioned Fela Kuti, bartok and shostakovich. I'm not keen to put any Serge references up as there's too many googleable associations with my name and melody nelson. I really don't want any prospective suitors to read my ancient cached posts from the radiohead message board or here for that matter.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 11 August 2005 10:27 (twenty years ago)

I think i also mentioned Fela Kuti, bartok and shostakovich.

The most musically advanced slash fiction ever!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 11 August 2005 10:28 (twenty years ago)

Any lady who mentioned a liking for Serge Gainsbourg, Fela Kuti, Bartok and Shostakovich would definitely get a response from me!

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 11 August 2005 10:29 (twenty years ago)

maybe that's why they don't...

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 11 August 2005 10:30 (twenty years ago)

If i read another profile saying that their current reading is the Da Vinci Code i'll scream.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

22 million sheep can't be wrong!

Onimo (GerryNemo), Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:11 (twenty years ago)

I sometimes scan the singles columns of Time Out and the Guardian, but once you've ruled out all the advertisers who think (a) GSOH = overuse of popular catchphrases and/or (b) specify someone "tall" and/or "solvent," there isn't much left.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:14 (twenty years ago)

edinburgh you say... hmm, why not just date an ILXor? namely, CALUM

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:30 (twenty years ago)

leigh, pic please?

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:37 (twenty years ago)

My pic's further up the page

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:39 (twenty years ago)

it's not working for me, why's that?

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:40 (twenty years ago)

GSOH = overuse of popular catchphrases

Gay Single Old Hag?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 11 August 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

If only it really did mean that.

Forest Pines (ForestPines), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:52 (twenty years ago)

I thought it was a typo of "Gosh!"

k/l (Ken L), Thursday, 11 August 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

I'm casting my net wider and checking out weegie blokes too.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 11 August 2005 14:23 (twenty years ago)

Leigh - your profile is great, your picture even better! FAA (Fancy An Affair?)

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 11 August 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

Aww shucks.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 11 August 2005 14:29 (twenty years ago)

A slightly larger version of my profile picture http://pictures.match.com/pictures/97/91/37489791B.jpeg

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 11 August 2005 14:53 (twenty years ago)

Right that's it, I'm yours Leigh! When's the next flight to Edinburgh?

Dr. C (Dr. C), Thursday, 11 August 2005 16:12 (twenty years ago)

gsoh = good sense of humour. (which, to me, always seems a pointless thing to say)

koogs (koogs), Thursday, 11 August 2005 16:36 (twenty years ago)

leigh, i wouldnt get my hopes up about online dating. it really suxxxx.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Thursday, 11 August 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

Well, it certainly weeds me out, as I've not got a sense of humour. :-|

Alce Tea-Skirt (kate), Friday, 12 August 2005 08:23 (twenty years ago)

I shan't say any more after this, in fear of coming across as creepy and stuff (hopefully ILXers who haf met me in real life will vouch that I am not creepy in any way?) but...

...your photo is incredibly sexy and the so-called 'men' of Edinburgh should be ashamed of themselves for not beating a path to your new flat, Sunday papers and wine in hand. I would if I was them (and i wasn't married and living in London).

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 12 August 2005 08:51 (twenty years ago)

CAREFUL LEIGH HE'S MARRIED WITH KIDS AND IS EVEN OLDER THAN I AM!!!!

a deep love of the ancient sport of darts would also be advantageous... ;-)

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Friday, 12 August 2005 08:58 (twenty years ago)

I said I was fucking married Carlin, so don't try it! How's that song go? 'Married with kids, when you should be having fun with Leigh'?

No, stop it. I am off on holiday in an hour, so no-one will have to be bothered with me for a week or so. Leigh - I hope your on-line dating provides the man of your dreams - good luck!

Dr. C (Dr. C), Friday, 12 August 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

I can’t view your picture as work’s banned anything to do with matchmaking sites.

Bugger!

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Friday, 12 August 2005 09:04 (twenty years ago)

It's nice to be appreciated.

leigh (leigh), Friday, 12 August 2005 09:31 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Still no takers, bah.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 31 August 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

two weeks pass...
Seem to be getting somewhere at last...

leigh (leigh), Friday, 16 September 2005 14:26 (twenty years ago)

Which site are you on?

I've just signed up with OKCupid and am moaning about the low volume already. Are my expectations too high?

The Brocade Fire (kate), Friday, 16 September 2005 14:30 (twenty years ago)

I'm with match.com. Signed up to OkCupid ages ago but was seriously unimpressed with what it came up with.

leigh (leigh), Friday, 16 September 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

Match.com makes you pay, does it not? Though maybe that would weed out the goths and the teenagers. The problem I keep having is that any of the attractive men that come up haven't seemed to have logged on in months.

The Brocade Fire (kate), Friday, 16 September 2005 14:50 (twenty years ago)

The singles ads in Time Out have really gone downhill. They used to be far more creative.

One Valentine's Day issue, they looked back at the best single ads ever featured, and set John Gill (then resident music critic) the challenge of writing a good one.

Bob Six (bobbysix), Friday, 16 September 2005 14:55 (twenty years ago)

You do have to pay if you want to send and receive email but it's free to put a profile and 'wink' at people.

leigh (leigh), Friday, 16 September 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

What is this winking thing? Is that like woo-ing on OKC? I don't like that, I like to be able to send/receive proper messages. Even if all I say is "I like your shirt" or "you have pretty hair" or "what an interesting profile".

The Brocade Fire (kate), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

(I suppose it's a more personal icebreaker. Shows one actually looked at the profile/picture)

The Brocade Fire (kate), Friday, 16 September 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
Well match is a complete waste of time, i'm giving the scotsman and the guardian a try.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 14:06 (twenty years ago)

Ah yes, the Tall and Solvent Guardian personal ads.

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 14:09 (twenty years ago)

Anything's got to be better than the dross on match. This baldie 46 year old has expressed interest, he looks like he might be minted.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 14:17 (twenty years ago)

What's Irvine Welsh doing in the world of online dating?

Marcello Carlin (nostudium), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

you not found that alpha male yet?

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Wednesday, 2 November 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)
