I realize they're not quite the same, but how do these retail behemoths stack up?

walmart owns asda, isn't that a better comparison?

According to the Economist, Tesco is the largest retail employer in Britain. I guess one thing I'm wondering is whether they exploit this status the way Wal-mart does.

Tesco are horrible (even though I shop there all the time). This is what they've done to my home town.

People be shopping where it's convenient (I shop at Tesco most because it is about 200 yards from my house), but I also shop at markets and other shops in town, and sometimes Asda or other supermarkets if I am passing one. Trouble in Inverness is that you just don't have the choice any more, due to people liking the idea of having Tescos there and therefore using it, and then they complain when everyone else does the same and the wee shops go away. So Tescos go "woo, everyone loves us" [conveniently ignoring the fact that there is little alternative] "let's open another store". Petrol in Inverness is dearer too as a result as there is no supermarket price war driving the price down.

Tesco is expanding at about 9 times the rate that Walmart is, because they are spreading internationaly in places like china. It owns 34% of Britains Retail Market Share compaired to Walmarts 11% of the American Retail Market share, Tesco is set to expand into America aswell. You can not say that Tesco is as bad as walmart, Tesco pay there employeys alot more, they pay all overtime, they allow all unions. And you can hardly say they are using there Monopoly to push prices up because, they could but instead they still choose to lower there prices below that or Asda, Morrisons and Sainsburys.

plus at least they put their polythene vegetable bags where you expect them to be as opposed on the edge of each aisle like what Sainsbury's do.
