he typified the period where english clubs came back into europe after the heysel ban, and were lagging way behind. he was a 10/10 premiership player, but he was only a 5 or 6 in international terms. he did not do much in big european club and international matches.
man united's younger players outgrew him, and became international stars and feared outside the premiership in a way cantona wasn't.
how does he really compare to the maldinis, zidanes, stoichkovs and nedveds of the era? not terribly favourable imo.
my scepticism is probably a reaction to the excessive worship. i liked eric.

Obviously classic. I read a bio of him earlier in the year. I love how his delight on relocating to England was basically that of an anthropologist discovering a race of noble savages.
