photos of people with large dead animals.
its so fucking primal, and formally well composed

sorry, some dual versions there.

top five reasons
1) the formal, ritualised posing--how there are spec. rules that come with the different animals--indicating status.
2) the costuming, emerging from a contradictory fuctionalism (ie the other hunters cant shoot us so we should wear clothing thats really bright, the animals cant find us we must wear camafaluge.) it reminds me of the tension of the dress/battle uniform of soilders.
3) how in hunting pictures (not sport--hunting!) from the neolitihic onward, have shockingly similar poses, etc.
4) what it means to pose wtih dead animals. in the sense that those who hunt for food do not photograph like those who hunt for trophy--but i bet money that everything but the boar and the wolf of these photos, is v. much used for meat.
5) there is a homosocial nostaliga of a world w/o women, in these magazines--which might explain why it is so liked by the conserative power of our country.

Anthony, you heartbreaker.

the fifth point is deft. changing--but its less well repped in the magazines, and sites that are part of this

well i think my mom would agree with you on the homosociality of it all. she's definitely an outlier. she likes the outdoors, she likes meticulous processes, and waiting, and doing things that are very serious and risky but also w/ long stretches of quiet. she's not all zen about it or anything but there is definitely a huge art-appeal to her hunting beyond killing shit (and filling my freezer).

anthony's list reminds me of his list on why jessica simpson's 'these boots...' was the best thing ever.

ie, the points don't actually say what's good about the thing in question

N_RQ, Monday, 15 August 2005 12:41 (twenty years ago)

yeah, all his points could easily be used to dismiss said things!

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 15 August 2005 22:21 (twenty years ago)
