Look, if you had one shot, one opportunity, to seize everything you ever wanted in one moment, would you capture it, or just let it slip?

ok, so: i got a place to do doctoral rizzearch in film history at b1rkb3ck college from this autumn...

BUT

i just found out the funding quango (4rts and human1ties Rizzearch councizzle) are NOT seeing things my way and won't pony up a grant.

SO

do i

1) borrow the money and do it anyway

2) not do it

?

If it really means that much to you, you'll find a way to pay for it.

However, I'd be cautious about expecting one single opportunity to be the answer to *all* your life. You might have unrealistic expectations, which are a surefire way to disappointment.

Alce Tea-Skirt (kate), Monday, 15 August 2005 07:54 (twenty years ago)

don't worry, i will post my 'why is my book in turnaround?' thread another day!

N_RQ, Monday, 15 August 2005 07:55 (twenty years ago)

Borrow the money and do it! Totally! The A&H research council barely ever give anyone money EVER as far as I can tell so do it do it do it because they are steenkers.

(PS I deal all the time with certain other research councils and I am so using the term COUNCIZZLE for the rest of my working days)

Lucretia My Reflection (Lucretia My Reflection), Monday, 15 August 2005 07:56 (twenty years ago)

(I have the opposite problem. By the time I heard back from Birkbeck about my application, I'd decided I didn't really want to do the degree after all. I just don't have the time, with my new job. After all, it's not a good sign that I can't be bothered to finish the entrance exam (oh, simultaneous equations be damned) because I haven't got the time to go and buy graph paper - does not bode well for committing to four years of such.)

Alce Tea-Skirt (kate), Monday, 15 August 2005 07:59 (twenty years ago)

WHY would you be doing a doctorate? To teach? I have thought about it many times but, working in a university, the idea now has no appeal to me at all.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 15 August 2005 08:03 (twenty years ago)

it's a good question, nick, and the 'teaching' question is one i have to engage with.
the answer is a bit long and involved, but basically i genuninely think the research i want to do needs to be done, and i can't do this in any way BUT going into the academy.
i wouldn't have stepped up if i didn't have an absurdly overinflated belief in my own instincts.

N_RQ, Monday, 15 August 2005 08:12 (twenty years ago)

Do you have to watch a lot of movies?

*twirls gum on finger*

LeCoq (LeCoq), Monday, 15 August 2005 08:15 (twenty years ago)

actually no, not so much! i don't think. it's about british 'film culture' in the 20s and 30s.

N_RQ, Monday, 15 August 2005 08:17 (twenty years ago)

Oh COOL! So they teach you how they made Austin Powers and stuff? Did you know that Destiny's Child also used joke teeth in their video? *pops rancid gum back in mouth, giggles*

LeCoq (LeCoq), Monday, 15 August 2005 08:22 (twenty years ago)

if i *do* get to teach, i will do a fierce thursday morning seminar on 'lost'.

N_RQ, Monday, 15 August 2005 08:24 (twenty years ago)

We will all support your decision on condition we get to come to your classes for free and pretend to be visiting intellectuals from other universities.

Also what you are doing sounds interestting, and who knows, you might get a nice pop history book out of it.

If there's any way you can do it, I think you should do it.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 15 August 2005 08:30 (twenty years ago)

Would anyone really answer 'Everything I ever wanted? Oh I'd let it slip..' in response to this thread title? And yeah, the A&H R.C. are a bit tight with the £££ so just do what everyone else does and get a career development loan to fund your way through it.

Affectian (Affectian), Monday, 15 August 2005 08:44 (twenty years ago)

eminem is at his most ayn-randy with this song: it's about whether you *can* 'capture it'. but the film is about a second chance. go figger.

N_RQ, Monday, 15 August 2005 08:52 (twenty years ago)

Oh right then, you better not never let it go, you only get one shot so don't miss your chance, this opportunity only comes once in a lifetime, etccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc. Figgered, but the qu still looks like a moot choice. Anyway, CDL are your friends. And perhaps consider a loan from HSBC or one of them. Or even maxing out a bunch of credit cards.

Affectian (Affectian), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:18 (twenty years ago)

all those young girls in uni nick!!

(is doglatin's sister going to uni soon?)

ken c (ken c), Monday, 15 August 2005 09:21 (twenty years ago)

yeah, have looked at CDL: doesn't seem massively different from regular loans, but not paying innarest initially is a good thing. this will probably be what i do. how 'vocational' the research is is a bit of a puzzler. probably as vocational as tony blair's legal training.

N_RQ, Monday, 15 August 2005 09:22 (twenty years ago)

I'd think fucking long and hard about this Henry - no grant = penury for three to seven years while you struggle like fuck, and if you don't want to go into academia at the end of it then it's a complete waste. You're no more employable with a PhD than with a BA unless you're going into academia or somethign very closely related. My instinct is negative on this. "Because the reasearch needs to be done" doesn't seem like enough reason to me, for effectively putting your entire life on hold for a period of further years.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 15 August 2005 10:26 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i'm not all against going into academia if that's what it takes, at the end of the day. basically: YES it is struggle, but it's already BEEN struggle. it might be a bit more, but i doubt it, because i've barely got through the last four years.

academia is the most likely final outcome, but i'm out of other options. the research needing to be done is a big deal to me; i can't talk about this too much, but there's ANOTHER big project i've been working on which is gradually falling apart which has also involved too much self-sacrifice.

on friday i got id'd -- buying cigarettes. i'm a week off my 25th birthday, and duder thought i was 15. however, this feels like my last shot. normal life? fuck is that, barbeques and ballgames?

N_RQ, Monday, 15 August 2005 10:35 (twenty years ago)

i get the distinct impression Nick is rather randy today.

Sociah T Azzahole (blueski), Monday, 15 August 2005 10:37 (twenty years ago)

I'm not talking about "real life", I'm talking about "your life" - unless you are TOTALLY committed to what you want to research, it's just yet more deferment, yet another thing you do in order to help you decide what to do, from what I've seen via friends who've done PhDs while I've been working here. You'll be 30, pretty much, by the time you're finished.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 15 August 2005 10:46 (twenty years ago)

yeah, i am that committed, is the thing. i've never had much of a problem deciding what i want to do: the problem has been making it happen. it's definitely not deferment, anyway. but you're right, it does fuck me financially. (i'll be 27 when i finish, though.)

N_RQ, Monday, 15 August 2005 10:51 (twenty years ago)

27 when you finish means it's only 2 years? Not a full PhD then?

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 15 August 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

well, i'll be almost 28. i'm 24 now, it's three years long.

N_RQ, Monday, 15 August 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

Three year fulltime though? Without funding you'll find it very hard to manage fulltime, most people I know without funding work and do it part-time.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 15 August 2005 12:04 (twenty years ago)

yeah full-time, as i say it means borrowing a shitload (and working the substantial vacations, natch).

N_RQ, Monday, 15 August 2005 12:16 (twenty years ago)

one month passes...
harumph, well, it looks like i'm kind of going to do this, very part-time. i 'suaded them to pay my tuition fees and you can't really say 'fairer than that'. fuck nose how i'll work it, or even what i'll work.

N_RQ, Thursday, 6 October 2005 08:56 (twenty years ago)

Well done!

Anna (Anna), Thursday, 6 October 2005 08:59 (twenty years ago)

thank you. it's odd, i've gone schizo and can't really see any joy in it, but everyone's all props. i kind of said 'pay my fees or i won't do it', which for me is kind of being 'the sheriff'.

N_RQ, Thursday, 6 October 2005 09:03 (twenty years ago)

two months pass...
Now, who's hot who not
Tell me who rock who sell out in the stores
You tell me who flopped who copped the blue drop
Who jewels got robbed who's mostly Goldie down
to the tube sock, the same ol pimp
Mase, you know ain't nuttin change but my limp
Can't stop till I see my name on a blimp
Guarantee a million sales pullin all the love
You don't believe in Harlem World nigga double up
We don't play around it's a bet lay it down
nigga didn't know me ninety-one bet they know me now
I'm the young Harlem nigga with the Goldie sound
Can't no Ph.D. niggaz hold me down, Cooter
schooled me to the game, now I know my duty
Stay humble stay low blow like Hootie
True pimp niggaz spend no dough on the booty
And then ya yell there go Mase there go your cutie
*singers come in over this last line*

I don't know what, they want from me
It's like the more money we come across
The more problems we see
(repeat 2X)

Verse Two: Puff Daddy

Yeah yeah, ahaha, from the C-to-the-A-to-the-D-D-Y
know you'd rather see me die than to see me fly
I call all the shots
Rip all the spots, rock all the rocks
Cop all the drops, I know you thinkin now's
when all the ballin stops, nigga never
home gotta call me on the yacht
Ten years from now we'll still be on top
Yo, I thought I told you that we won't stop
Now whatcha gonna do when it's cool
bag a money much longer than yours
and a team much stronger than yours, violate me
this'll be your day, we don't play
Mess around be D.O.A., be on your way
Cause it ain't enough time here, ain't enough lime here
for you to shine here, deal with many women
but treat dimes fair, and I'm
bigger than the city lights down in Times Square
Yeah, yeah yeah

I don't know what, they want from me
It's like the more money we come across
The more problems we see
(repeat 2X)

Verse Three: Notorious B.I.G.

Uhh, uhhh
B.I.G., P-O, P-P-A
No info, for the, DEA
Federal agents mad cause I'm flagrant
Tap my cell, and the phone in the basement
My team supreme, stay clean
Triple beam lyrical dream, I be that

Gats in holsters girls on shoulders
Playboy, I told ya, bein mice to me
Bruise too much, I lose, too much
Step on stage the girls boo too much
I guess it's cause you run with lame dudes too much
Me lose my touch, never that
If I did, ain't no problem to get the gat
Where the true players at?
Throw your Rollies in the sky
Wave em side to side and keep your hands high
While I give your girl the eye, player please
Lyrically, niggaz see, B.I.G.
be flossin jig on the cover of Fortune
Five double oh, here's my phone number
Your man ain't got to know, I got to go
Got the flow down pizat, platinum plus
Like thizat, dangerous
on trizack, leave your ass blizzack

I don't know what, they want from me
It's like the more money we come across
The more problems we see
(repeat 3X)
What's goin on?
What's goin on?
I don't know what, they want from me
It's like the more money we come across
The more problems we see
(repeat 3X to fade)
